Gifted hands movie
Sunday, February 8th, 2009What’s On Today: Gooding in ‘Gifted Hands,’ Bell Back as ‘Witch’
Cuba Gooding Jr. puts in a good performance in “Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story” (TNT, 8 and 10 p.m., midnight) portraying the disadvantaged Detroit lad who was encouraged by his illiterate mother to study, such that he went to Yale and eventually became world’s best pediatric neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he was preparing for his toughest challenge, separating twins conjoined at the head. The satisfying production, which features Kimberly Elise of “Close to Home,” shows how much better TV movies can be when they don’t skimp on production; this one is another in a series of strong movies underwritten by Johnson & Johnson.
Elsewhere in TV movies, Catherine Bell returns as the bewitching neighbor and new B&B owner Cassie Nightingale in the “The Good Witch’s Garden” (Hallmark, 9 p.m.), a sequel to last year’s “The Good Witch” (Hallmark, 7 p.m.). Coincidentally, Bell is also in another TV movie that happens to play about the same time, “Still Small Voices” (Lifetime, 7 p.m.).
Elsewhere, “Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay” (Cinemax, 10 p.m.) gets a cable premiere while the place is still open. And “Casablanca” (TCM, 8 p.m.) begins a night about the reach and influence of Nazi Germany that also includes “Sahara” (9:45 p.m.), “The Great Escape” (11:30 p.m.) and “Das Boot” (2:30 a.m.).
Parts of Mystic seaport, the Essex Steam Train, South Norwalk as well as Roton Middle School in Norwalk are seen in the initial episode of “Young American Heroes” (CPTV, 10:30 a.m.), a new series for kids in which bored history students are helped by the real subjects of their papers via time travel. In this case it’s Frederick Douglass in an episode shot entirely in Connecticut called “Pathway from Slavery to Freedom.”In addition to the Connecticut locales, there are a number of actors from the state in the production including Charly Alvarez of Farmington; Mary Ann Wasil Nilan of Milford; Marion Mason, Ryder Chasen and Colleen Murphy all of Westport; Teresa Teed of Norwalk; and John Halas of Danbury.Hamden middle school student Kendall Jones is featured as the 8-year-old Douglass; Norwalk elementary student Malik Goethe is Douglass at six. But the one you’ll recognize most is the 20-year-old version of the author, lecturer and abolitionist - it’s Jamie Hector who played Mario Stanfield on “The Wire.” The episode repeats Sunday at 6:30 p.m., Monday at 10:30 p.m. and Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
This week’s “George Carlin: The Mark Twain Prize” (WGBY, Channel 57, 9 p.m.) gets a replay.
The new group of lookers from the upcoming second season are introduced in “Make Me a Super Model 2″ (Bravo, 11 p.m.), while the rest of the day is given to a 12 hour marathon of “America’s Next Top Model” (Bravo, 10 a.m.).
Bradley Cooper, from “He’s Just Not That IntoYou” hosts a new “Saturday Night Live” (NBC, 11:30 p.m.). The critically acclaimed band TV on the Radio performs.
No. 1 UConn men (ESPN, 6 p.m.) hosts Michigan at Gampel Pavilion while Marquette hosts the No. 1 UConn women (CPTV, 8 p.m.). In other women’s college basketball action, it’s Kansas State at Baylor (CSN, noon).
Men’s college hoops abounds with Cincinnati at Georgetown (WCTX, Channel 59, noon), Syracuse at Villanova (ESPN, noon), Coppin State at South Carolina State (ESPN2, noon), Towson at Hofstra (MSG, noon), Notre Dame at UCLA (CBS, 1 p.m.), Colorado at Oklahoma (YES, 1:30 p.m.), George Mason at James Madison (CSN, 2 p.m.), Texas at Nebraska (ESPN, 2 p.m.), South Alabama at Western Kentucky (ESPN2, 2 p.m.), Pittsburgh at DePaul (MSG, 2 p.m.), Oklahoma State at Kansas (ABC, 3:30 p.m.), Delaware at Georgia State (CSN, 4 p.m.), Indiana at Michigan State (ESPN, 4 p.m.), Southern Illinois at Missouri State (ESPN2, 4 p.m.), St. Francis at Wagner (MSG, 4 p.m.), Kansas State at Texas A&M (YES, 4 p.m.), Charleston at Davidson (ESPN2, 6 p.m.), Florida State at Clemson (NESN, 6 p.m.), New Mexico State at Nevada (ESPN2, 8 p.m.) and Memphis at Gonzaga (ESPN, 9 p.m.) and Washington State at California (CSN, 10:30 p.m.).
