Liveblogging The Presidential Debate That Almost Wasn’t [John Mccain Less Of A Wuss Than We Thought]

oh, it is on. john mccain absolute to show, barack obama doesn’t get 90 free minutes of tv and we get to listen to them blather on together but, at least on this couch, i’ve got beer so when i say “drink!” i disposition be drinking! how multifarious times will we hear about john mccain being tortured? will he talk about georgia? will there be enough beer for the sake of me to detrain b leave through his many mentions of the surge? only the next interminable period of time will tell.

10:51 ET: Fine, I’m as addicted as you. Via a link Anna sent me earlier today, my family is now discussing Palin’s lack of press availability. We’re discussing this article that points out Palin’s held no press conferences, given 3 interviews and answered reporters’ questions once since her nomination. Biden’s had 4 pressers and given 89 interviews. My parents now both think that this is bullshit. Also, to clarify: Brian Williams didn’t say they wouldn’t let Palin appear, he said that they’d offered her the opportunity and the McCain camp sent Giuliani. But the meaning was clear.

The great society

10:46 ET: ZOMG! The networks invited both VPs to comment on the debates and Biden showed and the McCain camp… sent Rudy Giuiiani?? He hasn’t been keeping up on his hair cuts. Brian Williams announced that McCain’s people wouldn’t let her appear. Ok, now, seriously, promise, going to stop watching. But even my dad thought that was some bullshit.

10:38 ET: Ok, punditry is hurting my not-nearly-drunk-enough ears. I’m going to go track down some more alcohol. I’ll see you in Crappy Hour in the morning on Monday! Shit, I need a vacation, too, I guess.

10:36 ET: Jim Lehrer is out! And McCain gets the last word, I guess because Obama had the first. Oooh, and I think the stage is slightly tilted because when they met in the middle , Obama didn’t look as much viagra kaufen taller as he is. Iiiiinteresting. And Brian Williams points out that McCain erred when he said that Mitchell offered to resign.

10:36 ET: Did you know McCain was a POW?

10:35 ET: McCain all but says “ready on day one.” Yawn. Hillary said it better and pithier, too.

10:33 ET: “The next President has to have a broader strategic vision” say Obama. But McCain says that Obama doesn’t have the knowledge and judgment AND THEN says that Obama is stubborn in a way that Bush is as though all of McCain’s flip-floppery is really just good judgment. McCain also says that veterans know that he will take care of them, that’s why he can get away with voting against the GI Bill.

10:31 ET: “Over the last 8 years, this Administration along with Senator McCain have been solely focused on Iraq… In the mean time, bin Laden is still out there… al Qaeda is resurgent. In the mean time we’ve got problems with China… and they are active in regions like Latin America and Africa. The conspicuousness of their presence is only such because of our absence” because of our focus on Iraq. Nice point.

10:30 ET: Lehrer asks John McCain whether not being seen as huge bullying assholes is important for the next Administration, and McCain starts talking about missile defense and how Obama doesn’t get that we have to keep plowing money and troops into Iraq to not look like a bunch of weak-kneed assholes. Bad pivot.

10:29 ET: Oh, and by the way, Obama recognizes that we’ve fucked up our security by being so unpopular and he’s working it out.

10:28 ET: Obama says we’re safer but SUITCASE NUKES! when we’re spending gobs of money on missile defense which he thinks is fine to spend money on missile defense but should spend more money on non-proliferation and we need to get on the 60 countries al Qaeda is operating in.

10:26 ET: John McCain thinks we should never torture anyone again, but he voted against a ban on waterboarding, but I guess he did that because it’s not really torture.

10:25 ET: Likelihood of another 9/11? McCain wishes to remind you that he worked across the aisle with Joe Lieberman as though he’s a real Democrat. By the way, he started to say that Bush made us safer but ends up talking about the bipartisan Commission he helped create which was awkies.

10:24 ET: John McCain interrupts really late to bring up offshore drilling and tries to pivot back to Nunn-Lugar and nuclear waste and lies about Obama’s nuclear waste storage. McCain talks over him, Obama decides not …

Google at 10 - a Decade of Innovation - But Challenges Ahead

by charlie anzman of seo and tech daily (friendfeed/twitter)

yesterday, google posted a fascinating timeline of the past ten years.in search those of us that have been in every direction viagra kaufen since the days when yahoo! dominated search (and google wasn’t ‘here’ yet), the timeline brings back a a ton of memories, and also causes some pondering about the approaching.google’s force has without exception been their corporate culture. i’ve written about it before. a few weeks ago, eric schmidt, google’s ceo, commented that they try not to buy a part of companies because it’s easier to innovate from within, rather than to try and change the way a fellowship does things. (paraphrased).others are complaining about google’s stock amount. a careful look at insider trading over two years showed many (current) employees cashing wide of the mark in the 300’s per allotment. was 700+ in 2008 ever in effect in the cards? did wall street calculate a little too much?for the nonce we see google literally firing on all cylinders. a unfledged web browser (chrome), a significant upgrade to picasa (and picasaweb), and lots of other upgrades, apis, additions and announcements made over the late two months.there’s little disputing the fact that google (and the internet) be dressed actually created and/or eliminated exisiting business models (or significantly changed them). not just internet models but brick and mortar businesses as well. they’ve also created opportunity for those who continued to comprehend, learn and took advantage of it.now, people don’t yahoo-it, or msn-it (even though they do), the vernacular is google-it … and that alone is huge.interestingly, for you advertising buffs, google has no tag line. there is no ‘what we are’ or ‘what we do’. obviously, someone recognized very early on, that the internet (and the world) was changing so solidly, it was difficult to intimate exactly where google’s strengths would evolve. that continues to be the case.i find i now have the anyhow reaction to google’s achievement that i did to microsoft’s varied years ago. both be used as an example of how just a few people can create something big in just a few leaving out years and set an example in return those thoughtful about doing just that.like microsoft, and profuse others, google is a role model of sorts for entrepreneurs to each.as they grow and mature, it will be difficult for google to maintain their corporate discernment, but not impossible. the perks of working at the googleplex make terminated and total atmosphere. expropriate people forget about their mundane day-to-day worries so they can think, be creative, and work.so . beneficial birthday google! one can only imagine (or preferably yet vision) what the next ten years will bring.read more by charlie anzman at seo and tech daily.more: louisgray.com rss friendfeed e-letters stall: 408 646.2759

A New Chaplin Movie

Chaplin and Piaget

After school special - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The American Broadcasting Company coined the term with a series of programs known as ABC After School Specials. CBS distributed its own productions as the CBS Schoolbreak Special. CBS had a program called Famous Classic Tales, which aired Australian cartoons that were adapted from literature books (similar to Family Classic Tales). NBC also had afterschool programs under the umbrella title Special Treat.

Plot: Three high school guys attempt to make a porno movie. full summary add synopsis. Plot Keywords:

award-winning cinematographer carlo piaget recently shot his 10-minute coating circus on a 1918 bell & howell 2709 camera once hardened by silent conceal legend charlie chaplin. the project came about after a chance caucus with chaplin’s son eugène, who also stars in the peel.

“Circus opens in a foggy city as an agitated man is distracted by his mobile phone. He stumbles and finds himself pulled into a seemingly deserted circus. He glimpses a dancer, then a magician (Eugène Chaplin) hypnotises him via a spiral of zoetrope images. When the man wakes up, the circus has vanished but a circular mark on the ground and the music viagra kaufen on his phone prove that his experience wasn’t a dream.”

Before filming, Piaget painstakingly disassembled and restored the 90-year-old camera and located a set of vintage motion picture lenses. The unmodified camera had to be hand-cranked. Vintage silent films were usually shot at 16 frames per second, but Piaget chose the modern rate of 24 fps (although some scenes were shot slower for dramatic effect), requiring three rotations per second.

rather than attempting to duplicate the distressed look of vintage film, circus was carefully photographed on fashionable criminal & virginal kodak negative film. it was then printed onto color stock with a range of monochromatic tints. the result is a modern re-imagining of silent-era cinematography.

At the end of the day, Piaget was impressed by the performance of the ancient Bell & Howell, “Others have shot films with old equipment, but with more or less modified cameras and newer lenses. This particular camera, the lenses and accessories are all 100% genuine. This little film is a love story between two objects of different ages and a good example of film’s universal compatibility.” [thanks, John Terendy!]

Market Mayhem Watch : Day 1

gold jumped some $30 on the remote of fear. if the u.s. supervision is prospering to bail senseless the banks people realised it was one day to bail out of u.s. dollars, bonds and stocks. guido took profit on the disarm, probably far too soon. you don’t go broke taking profits too soon conceding that. gold carried on through $900 without guido for the outing.the euro jumped nearly 2.5% or some 300 pips, biggest take off for till doomsday. took profit on that and switched to shorting the dollar against sterling on the possibly irrational point that other speculators will start to eye a $2 pound and the gesticulation against the dollar was not as violent as it was vis-a-vis the euro. the position is a little underwater.reasonable to prove what an harmful speculator guido is he shorted the ftse hard. am still running the midget and pronounced to bazaar am up some 21.5% overall on the era. a profit or loss of that importance in a day signals too much leverage in too volatile a market. strangely traders at no time mind furious p&l swings when they are to the plus side. friday’s broad stock market gains evaporated, oil arrive at $125 a barrel. tomorrow can’t be this restless, can it?the ft’s alphaville blog (”the site that supports our shorts”) highlights a downing street petition to criminalise consenting behaviour between capitalists. they want to criminalise short selling. some trade union boss told the labour pains confederate colloquium he wants to tax us into extinction. tax us to the bahamas more probable.

Roush Truck Program Back On Track

I got a chance to see the truck race last night at Las Vegas and I saw something I haven’t seen enough of in years…both Roush trucks running competitively all night. Erik Darnell and Colin Braun were good all night.

Darnell especially has been impressive since June or so, solidifying his status for next year I believe. He almost recorded his second win of the year last night and moved up to fourth in the series standings viagra kaufen. Braun ran in the top five most of the night and would have finished third if not for a last-lap wreck. That’s happened to win too often this year. Usually one truck has done well while the others struggles a bit.

Mark Martin and Travis Kvapil won multiple races in the No. 6, but Darnell has hit-or-miss. The consistency has been lacking. Maybe after last night, it’s coming back. If so, 2009 should be good. While I’m on the trucks, it never ceases to amaze me how their points battles always go down to the wire. They’re on the same path this year, as Benson and Hornaday sit one point apart with a handful of races left. In keeping with tradition it’ll go to Homestead, where you can count on at leat one team to pull a Jim Smith and flood the field.

McCain on Spain: Embassy says it’s Iraq grudge

spainmap

The presidential campaign moves so fast now that important stories are quickly forgotten. Yesterday’s confusion over McCain’s comments on meeting with Spanish PM Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero should not be forgotten quite so quickly.

To recap yesterday’s blogging: In April, McCain said he wanted good relations with Spain, and invited Zapatero to Washington. Then, in a Monday interview with a Spanish-language radio station in Miami that focused on Latin America, he said four times that he would meet with our friends, not our enemies, when asked about meeting with viagra kaufen Zapatero.

At times during the exchange with the surprised interviewer, he seemed to not know who Zapatero was. But the McCain campaign, denying a senior moment, said he meant what he said. Sometime since April, for unexplained reasons, McCain decided either that he didn’t like Zapatero, or that on principle he would not commit to meetings with anyone.

Today’s installment comes from the Spanish embassy — which speaks for a NATO ally and key intelligence cog in the war on terror in Europe which has troops fighting in Afghanistan:

“The only plausible explanation for McCain not wanting to meet with Zapatero, is that, like Bush, he is still angry about Spain pulling its troops out of Iraq in 2004. If McCain carries that much of a grudge then how in the world will he rebuild our relationship with Europe, as he has said he would do?”

Ronnie white

There is widespread suspicion that McCain simply decided there would be less political damage from flipping positions on Spain than from admitting that he got confused in the interview. But taking him at face value, that’s what we’re left with — that at this late date, he still holds a grudge against a leader who was elected because the people of Spain decided they didn’t want their soldiers dying in a war that even McCain says was poorly planned and poorly executed by Bush.

If he still has a grudge against Spain — Don Quixote, bulls-at-Pamplona, Christopher Columbus Spain — what about France and Germany, that wouldn’t send troops to Iraq in the first place? And the dozens of other countries that wouldn’t sign on? A change agent who still carries Bush’s grudges?

Of course, the ultimate fall back position is that it’s not country specific — he’s just decided since April that he shouldn’t agree in advance to meet with anyone. Aren’t there any voters out there who would actually like some minimal assurance that the next president, over the course of four years, will meet with Britain and Canada and Israel? How about everyone in NATO?

We’re committed to sending our kids to die if their territory is invaded. Is it too much to ask that someone running for president commit to meet, just once in the next four years, with their leaders? Or is it more important that someone running for president be allowed to escape the consequences of his own gaffe?

Monday’s Minute-to-Midnight Minor League Musings: The Prospects of Attrition

When you look at an organization’s bevy of prospects you have to accept that some of them, probably as many as half of them, will not qualify for similar consideration a year later. Injuries, poor performance, promotions and trades will exact a toll on any prospect list. Heading into the 2008 season the Oakland A’s had 13 grade B- or better prospects in their organization, using John Sickels’ method of grading. I prefer his way at grading prospects because a B-grade prospect in one system is held in the same regard as a B-grade prospect in another system. (And I’m making the cut-off for quality of prospect a B- because when I was a kid in school that was the lowest grade I could get and not get a talking to viagra from my parents.) During the season Beane traded for 5 more B-grade prospects in the Harden/Gaudin and Blanton deals.

We just heard Mr. Sickels discuss the state of the A’s farm system in an interview with Lord Blez. He gives the A’s credit for turning around a desolate farm system and fielding a group of prospects that are in the discussion for the title of best in the minor leagues. But the names will have radically changed from the list Mr. Sickels printed less then a year ago.

2008 In-Season Trades

Josh Donaldson (B)

Sean Gallagher (B)

Eric Patterson (B)

Adrian Cardenas (B)

Josh Outman (B)

Daric Barton, Carlos Gonzalez and Sean Gallagher will not be included in the 2009 list as they have too much time in the big leagues. It’s doubtful that Gio Gonzalez will pitch the necessary 20 innings to go over the rookie limit but his struggles in the Show and with commanding the strike zone in AAA will probably cause his B+ grade to drop to a B. Eric Patterson will probably have enough at bats by the end of the season to lose his rookie eligibility and if he doesn’t his big league performance would probably cause cialis him to drop into the B-/C+ range. Sickels mentioned in his chat that he’d probably grade Donaldson a C+ next time around but I’m going to show you some numbers in a bit that, combined with a strong showing in the Arizona Fall League, could raise that C+ to a B-.
