(CNN) — Americans and other foreigners were among those caught up in the bloodshed and chaos of the terror attacks in Mumbai, India, on Wednesday and Thursday.

A foreign national held hostage by gunmen for nearly 24 hours is released from the Oberoi hotel in Mumbai.

At least six foreigners were among the 125 dead, police said. Targets included two luxury hotels, the Oberoi and the Taj Mahal, as well as a cafe popular with Western tourists.

A man told a local television station that he was in the Oberoi around 10 p.m. Wednesday when gunmen entered the lobby and began rounding up guests, asking for anyone with a U.S. or British passport and taking about 15 of them hostage.

Fire raged at the Oberoi, the scene of much bloodshed as explosions and gunshots rang out Thursday morning. Outside the Taj Mahal, screaming and fighting broke out as reporters scrambled to capture the chaotic scene.

Australian filmmaker Anthony Rose told CNN that he had just arrived at the Oberoi hotel when he heard gunshots in the lobby and saw a fellow Australian shot in the leg and then shot at close range in the head by one of the attackers.

He said that he and others in his film crew fled through back doors in the hotel to escape the shooters.

Among those killed in the two days of violence was British yachtsman Andreas Liveras, according to St. George’s Hospital in Mumbai.

At least one French national is trapped in the Oberoi hotel, according to the French Foreign Ministry in Paris.

A woman from Nashville, Tennessee, was shot in the arm and leg by the attackers, who barged into a ballroom at her hotel, her husband told CNN affiliate WSMV.

Andi Varagona operates a holistic health clinic in Nashville and was in Mumbai for training, her husband, Santos Lopez, told the station.

According to Lopez, his wife called him and said, "We were ambushed and we were shot."

When he asked Varagona if she was all right, she told him she had been shot in the leg and arm and was at that moment being wheeled into surgery, Lopez said.

"My God, I cried more than I cried in my entire life," Lopez told WSMV. "I mean, it’s just been so overwhelming with emotion. … You tend to believe that things that happen in the world happen to other people, until it happens to you."

WSMV is reporting that Varagona came out of surgery Wednesday night — a bullet removed from her leg.

An American woman, who was still inside the Taj with her husband, told CNN by phone Thursday that television feeds into the rooms had stopped and she did not know what was going on.

"We have water and we’re hunkered down and patient and ready to wait it out," she said. "We’re OK

Happy Thanksgiving, America!: Much to Be Thankful For

Happy Thanksgiving to all of my friends and readers.

We have much to be thankful about here in America at the end of 2008. If you are reading this site, you know that I still have the freedom to write whatever I wish on its pages and that you have the freedom to read it and whatever else you like.

Although we are in a near-depression here in Michigan and an economic recession all over America, we are still residents of the greatest country on earth. Most of all, I am thankful to be an American.

I am thankful for my health, that I am alive, that I have the freedom of speech to exercise with this site. I am thankful for all of my freedoms here in America, since (for now), we still have them. I am mindful that even though as Americans we are the luckiest people on earth, we are also targets. I am thankful I am not one of the Americans murdered or achat cialis taken hostage by Muslims in Mumbai, India, last night. While I give thanks today, I pray for them and their families, as well as Rabbi Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg, an Israeli Rabbi and his wife also taken hostage last night. May G-d keep them safe and rescue them.

I am thankful for you, my readers, and your continued support of this site–your comments, tips to me on stories and scoops, and your overall moral support for what I do here. Your continued growth in size and numbers makes what I do here all worth it. I’m not just yelling at the wind here because you made it so.

Hard Ciders at Thanksgiving, So Underrated

I’m all about mixology, but even I’ll admit that while there are certainly exceptions, cocktails are best suited as a pre- or post-prandial enjoyment. And while others are weighing the benefits of Thanksgiving-friendly wines, Jason Wilson at the Washington Post reminds us of a seasonal, suitable and historically appropriate accompaniment to the meal: cider.

As Wilson points out, cider has a bad rap: most commercial brands are overly sweet, excessively carbonated and downright insipid. Cider deserves much better. During the colonial era and the nation’s early years, hard cider was popularly consumed by people of all ages and classes. More flavorful and, in many cases, safer than water in those pre-treatment days, cider was easy to make using the fruit grown on most any homestead.

And as Michael Pollan pointed out in The Botany of Desire, Johnny Appleseed?now Disneyfied into an apple-chomping wanderer?was providing a necessary service to early pioneers by giving them the means to produce this staple beverage.

Fortunately, many growers are rediscovering traditional apple varieties that make exceptional cider, and there are products on the market that show how complex and nuanced good cider can be (and, it should be pointed out, these ciders are typically on the dry side?a far cry from many of the sugary mass-market varieties). Aspall, from the UK, is bright and crisp, and even better, relatively easy to find.

Wilson also recommends French ciders such as Eric Bordelet Sydre Argelette and Cidre Bouche from Etienne Dupont, as well as Farnum Hill’s Extra Dry, which is made in New Hampshire.

It’s that time again; Bobby Jindal kicks off the speech season–in Iowa

Hard to believe this much time has passed already since the 2008 presidential election. But here we are only 37 months away from the Iowa caucuses.

And only 32 months ’til the Ames Straw Poll.

And here goes Louisiana Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal speaking at a fundraiser for the Iowa Family Policy Center (you remember them) at that familiar Sheraton Hotel in West Des Moines.

The 37-year-old Jindal made light of the occasion, of course, joking to some 800 curious listeners that it was way too soon to be making political speeches. “You might want to consider getting involved in some kind of recovery program,” he suggested to a receptive audience on his first trip to the Hawkeye State, as noted by MSNBC’s First Read.

But, of course, that’s exactly what he was doing anyway in the form of speaking about family. “As a parent,” said Jindal, knowing his conservative audience had precisely the same feelings, “I’m acutely aware of the overall coarsening of our culture in many ways.”

Jindal took the tack that many non-Washington Republicans instinctively know is the right one nowadays, giving the president-elect some time and room to succeed or fail on his own without the constant carping that hurt Republicans more on Nov. 4.

“‘Whether you voted for him or not,” Jindal said of the new president, “whether you supported the new leaders of Congress or not, they’re our president. They’re our Congress. They need our prayers. They need our support.”

Then he proceeded to talk some about his chief executive work back home in Louisiana, a kind of political introduction and plenty of mingling with the audience, who may remember he was there, come 2011. Jindal will be back. Same for Mike Huckabee. Probably Mitt Romney. Sarah Palin will pack them in sometime down the road.

Not so much because any of them have decided what they’re going to do come the next leap year. But because they and their strategists want to be ready just in case.

You can bet the bayou that Jindal went home with a pocketful of names, phone numbers and e-mail addresses. His staff will fire off thank you messages to those folks today or tomorrow. And they’ll stay in touch.
