Track palin

Bristol Palin has a boy

I’m the lucky on-call editor today and this news is just in: Congratulations to Bristol Palin for having a healthy baby boy, Tripp Easton Mitchell Johnston.

Bristol gave the baby the surname of his father, 18-year-old Levi Johnston, although the pair is not yet married. Tripp is a somewhat more conventional and less inspired moniker than Trig, Track, Willow, Bristol and Piper, the now infamous names of grandma Sarah Palin’s five kids. It’s hard not to notice how American political dynasties get a wee bit less creative and robust every generation.

There is no word about whether Bristol will wed Levi, as planned last summer, after her mom, Alaska’s governor, got the GOP vice presidential nomination. (It’s been so long, it’s hard to type that and really believe it really happened.) Both families have had their issues lately; Palin went home to defeat in November, and this month Johnston’s mother was arrested for the illegal sale of the prescription drug Oxycontin. Nasty classist folks like to call it “hillbilly heroin;” I prefer to think of it as Rush Limbaugh’s drug of choice. Of course, drug problems and unmarried pregnancies hit Democrats and Republicans, but one party tends to scold more.

Norwegian cruise

The Oxycontin problem aside, I’ve been hoping since August, when the news broke, Bristol would find a better future than marrying her self-described “redneck” boyfriend. It’s even possible she – and/or Levi – voted for Barack Obama, because they knew the chance of a politically mandatory wedding would plummet when John McCain lost.

In all seriousness, Broadsheet sends best wishes to Bristol and Tripp. May all mothers and babies born in the Obama era get the love and support they need, no matter the circumstances. And may all teenagers everywhere get honest and accurate information about family planning in the new year.

Cash-strapped states cut juvenile justice programs

state budget cuts are forcing some of the nation’s youngest criminals out of counseling programs and group homes and into juvenile prisons in what critics contend is a shortsighted move that will at the end of the day lead to more crime and higher costs.

tennessee, south carolina, kentucky and virginia are expanse states that have slashed juvenile objectivity spending - in some cases more than 20 percent - because of slumping tax collections. youngster advocates try to say they expect the recession will bring more cuts next year in other states, hitting programs that strive to rehabilitate children rather than simply locking them up.

“if you raise a child in prison, you’re common to raise a convict,” said south carolina youthful objectivity director note byars, credited with turning around a process once better known for warehousing children than counseling them and teaching them life skills.

sometimes, he’s been asked to rely up plans to trim an additional 15 percent from a juvenile fair play budget already cut $23 million, or 20 percent, since june as part of the state’s achievement to slash back $1 billion from its $7 billion budget.

all five of the system’s congregation homes - which generally blood less-ferocious offenders and give them more individual attention - have been shuttered. also gone are some all-out youth reform and after-kind programs in detention facilities.

3 DTV Switch Myths You Can Debunk Over The Holidays [Dtv Switch]

judging by our inbox, there are peacefulness a quantities of people who don’t understand the digital broadcast television switch. here are some myths that you can help debunk at your next family turnout.

1. The Death Of Analog Cable Has Something To Do With The DTV Switch. Cable companies who are getting rid of analog cable (the kind that plugs into your TV directly) are blaming the DTV switch. It actually is just a business decision and it has nothing to do with digital broadcast television. If they told you otherwise, they are lying to you so that you don’t get mad at them for making you get digital cable. Feel free to be mad at them.

2. You Need An HDTV For The DTV Switch. No. If a salesperson told you this, they were trying to screw you. All TVs will work after the DTV switch. You might need a converter box — but regular old non-HD TVs will work. To see if you need a converter box, follow this handy flowchart.

3. You Need To Upgrade To Digital Cable Because of the DTV Switch. Some cable companies are trying to upsell you on the digital cable package. If your cable company continues to offer analog cable, they will be required to provide you with your local channels in analog until 2012. No box needed. If they are discontinuing analog cable and trying to blame the DTV switch, see Myth #1.

As always, if you currently use an antenna to watch TV and think you might need a converter box, check out the information and ratings at Consumer Reports. They also have detailed information about the technical differences between digital and analog broadcasts, if you’re interested in learning more.

At the beginning, you decide from three character types: Romans, Teutons, or Gauls; each with their respective strengths and weaknesses….There’s an enhanced set of pay features that simplify game play without unbalancing the odds against those that play for free. Knowing how the game works and the approaches employed by other players will give you a competitive advantage in your section of the Travian universe. These aren’t cheats, but knowing about this can provide an edge over other players.Strategy”Travian game players are split into two general playing styles: Defenders and Attackers. The way you play the game and the character type you select combine to determine your play strategy.Defenders do not attack commonly. The defender’s primary objective is to survivel against attackers by maintaining its defense. Defenders usually are focused on developing defensive units and a strong defensive army. Defenders are usually Gaul type character, although sometimes you may find a defender who is Roman.Attackers, not surprisingly, are often raiding nearby players. The primary strategy of an attacker is to build up a strong offensive army for raiding. Teuton character types are often attackers. Most Travian users begin with one approach and stick with it. The two most common strategies, for both attacking and defending are Booming and Rushing.”Travian cheatsTravian cheatcheats for travian Travian - How to Defend Against ConqueringIn Travian if you are weak then chances are great that a stronger opponent will attempt to conquer you. Conquering is the “slow” process of an attacker taking over a weaker opponent; it usually involves catapults and rams. Now don’t give up your hopes if a veteran tries to conquer you. Remember, to prevent yourself from being conquered all it takes is a good defense. So put up a good fight and if you lose, relax and learn from your experience so that it won’t happen again.Travian - The Double ShieldThis strategy involves two barriers of protection against conquering. The first line of defense is a wall. Protect your village by simply building a wall, now this can be any type of wall: city, palisade, or earth. Putting up a wall is necessary to prevent conquering because walls improve your troops’ defenses. The next barrier protection is what I like to refer as the “human shield.” Basically, the human shield involves gathering as many defense troops as possible with the hope that you can overcome your attacker. I know, I know, you were expecting something more extravagant, but remember Travian is a game of war and not rocket science, and it’s usually case that the hardest problem is resolved using theTravian Game Hint - When all else Fails… Party, Party, Party!A wise man once told me that in order to get up, you need to get down. Bwa-ka-chik-a-wa-wa!!! Yes, that’s right an effective, but risky, strategy against a conquer attack is to celebrate. With a big celebration you can gain the support of an administrator (chief/chieftain/senator) as well as collect culture points. A celebration decreases the effectiveness of an administrator. So if your attacker sends an insufficient amount of administrators he/she will not be able to conquer you. Now in order to celebrate, at the very least, you’re going to need a level 10 ?Town Hall.Travian - Founding a New VillageSo you wanna found a village well you’re going to need a few things. First off, you’ll need either a palace (level - 10, 15, or 20) or a residence (level - 10 or 20). The other ingredients involved in founding a new village include: three settlers and a free space on the map. Both the palace and residence allows you to build and train 3 settlers. What fantasy movies Happens If An Embassy Holder Decides to Quit or Leave An Alliance? So let’s say you’re fearless alliance leader decides to hang up his mouse and keyboard one day and call it quits. Is Brian Baldinger’s Mangled Digit Growing A Face? [Duan!]

Brian Baldinger’s permanently dislocated little finger has been well documented by many, many people since he first started appearing on national television as an NFL analyst.

But yesterday a reader sent us in these screen shots of Baldinger in the booth and, yes, I do agree that the creepy little bastard seemed a little more distracting than usual. Is it growing? Or has a doctor found that it’s actually not dislocated, but a parasitic twin? I sent Mr. Baldinger an email, inquiring about the health of the pinky but he has not responded. Those are always fun emails to write.

Cops to be trained after head-scarf arrest

Filed under: Uncategorized — animesweep @ 12:47 pm

DOUGLASVILLE, Georgia (CNN) — The Douglasville Police Department said Monday its officers will undergo "sensitivity and cultural diversity training" after a Muslim woman who refused to remove her head scarf at a courthouse was jailed.

Lisa Valentine has been shaken "to her core" by her arrest last week, her lawyer says.

Lisa Valentine has been shaken “to her core” by her arrest last week, her lawyer says.

"We never want this to happen again. It’s not our intent to embarrass anybody," Police Chief Joe Whisenant said at a news conference.

The judge who had the woman jailed briefly for contempt of court will also take part in the training, Whisenant said.

The incident took place December 16 when Lisa Valentine, who also goes by her Muslim name, Miedah, accompanied her nephew to a hearing at Douglasville’s municipal courthouse. The scarf, called a hijab, covered her hair but not her face. It is part of her religious belief that her hair should be covered in public, as a form of modesty.

In an interview with CNN’s Rusty Dornin, Valentine said a bailiff told her she could not enter with her head scarf.

"I didn’t pose a threat to anybody," Valentine said. "So I got really angry. I told her that was discrimination, and I said it was b.s. — and I used the full term of the word."

She tried to leave, but the bailiff demanded that she appear before the judge, and pulled on her arm, Valentine said.

"I was right near the door. I said, ‘Don’t touch me.’ And so she got in front of me," Valentine said. "… She called for a guard or a police officer. He came and then he just was near me, and was like, ‘You’re going to do what you’re told to do.’

"And then he grabbed my arm, and of course instinctively I pulled it away. So he’s like grabbing me and bending my arm, like you see people who are resisting arrest, and trying to get really physical with me. … Then I said, ‘OK, OK,’ and I let them put the handcuffs on me."

Valentine said she would have had no problem with allowing a female officer to check under her head scarf to make sure she did not pose any danger.

Valentine said that when she told the judge what had happened, he sentenced her to 10 days in jail for contempt of court.

At the jail down the street, Valentine had to change into a jumpsuit. Her mug shot was taken — without her head scarf.

She was let out of jail later that day. Her attorney, M. Khurram Baig, said he does not know why she was released so quickly.

"It’s been devastating for her," Baig said. "We’re talking about a major life-altering event for somebody to realize that everything they thought they knew about our justice system may not actually be the case. So she’s been shook to her core."

Kids against hunger

Douglasville authorities describe the day’s events somewhat differently.

In a news release, police said Valentine repeatedly used the expletive, told the bailiff that the judge was "racist," pointed her finger toward the officer, and "became loud enough that she attracted the attention of another officer."

The news release said an officer did tell Valentine she could not leave, "and placed her hand on Mrs. Valentine’s wrist."

"Mrs. Valentine resisted the officer’s efforts by stiffening her arm, but did not physically fight with the officer," the release said.

When Judge Keith Rollins was told of the incident, the news release said, he ordered her jailed for 10 days.

The police department’s senior staff then investigated the incident and "determined that no fight took place" and "that Mrs. Valentine’s actions were primarily verbal and her resistance passive," according to the release. The police chief told the judge of the department’s findings and the judge rescinded the contempt order, the release said.

"Mrs. Valentine was not arrested because of her head scarf or any action related to the scarf," it said.

Valentine’s attorney said she has told him she did not call the judge racist.

Why James Bond Would Drink Motor Oil Before Drinking Coke

The first time I saw the James Bond Coca-Cola ad, I didn’t think much about it. But now it turns my spit to bile.

It’s disgustingly ironic that the owners of the James Bond series would advertise Coke with a film about (spoiler alert) a greenwashing corporation stealing water from the third world. Because that perfectly describes Coca-Cola Inc.

For the past decade, Coke has invested heavily in bottled water. An increasingly health-conscious public, aware of the sickening effects of cola, drove down carbonated soft drink sales. Coke responded by bottling purified tap water and selling it under the name “Dasani.” Thanks to healthy sales of “healthy” drinks (which according to the New York Times are “still just sugar water”), Coca-Cola has enjoyed rising international sales.

Allentown billy joel

Of course there have been setbacks. Coca-Cola recalled Dasani in the United Kingdom after they accidentally poisoned the bottled water with bromate, a possible carcinogen. At least it was only the Dasani that was tainted. In India, one of Coca-Cola’s fastest growing markets, problems ran deeper.

Advice for a (food loving) future nutritionist

Usually I get emails from folks who are considering going into cooking, attending cooking school, or something similar. I almost always respond. Recently I received a polite request for advice from a woman hoping to become a nutritionist. Here’s what I told her:

“Thanks for your email.

I would email and get in touch with folks in your area who are working on things that sound interesting. Offer to take them out for coffee or a other beverage (be sure to also try and pay for their drink!) and ask for twenty-thirty minutes of their time. I found people may be busy but are usually willing to talk about themselves and their experiences. I did this with many people and always sent a handwritten thank you note.

Also is there any sort of dietician professional trade group you can join? If so, do it. The IACP may have a branch for those in your field. Worth checking out, perhaps.

Another thing you can do is volunteer for events and things that will help build your resume. Show up early (I remember volunteering for an event and some volunteers were super late. It made them look terrible to the chefs & other folks that were there.) and offer to do dirty work such as taking out the garbage or similar tasks. Not glamorous but another way to find out how things are done.

Read the food sections of the newspapers and go to the library or subscribe to industry publications.

I can’t think of anything else right now but wish you the best of luck.”
