Who Are The 2009 Top College Football Recruits?

During the 2008 recruiting season, Terrelle Pryor was the talk of the town. Among many recruiting services, he was rated as the overall No. 1 prospect in the country.

A couple of others you may have heard about, Julio Jones and A.J. Green were also highly sought after prospects.

During the 2008 College Football season, there is absolutely little doubt that fans from Ohio State, Alabama, and Georgia were very pleased with the overall impact that these true freshman had on their team’s success this past season.

Since 2002, Rivals.com has compiled a database of potential college football players and tagged ratings on them for all to view. (Yes, they have for a very long time evaluated talent, but only have a database that can be viewed online dating back to 2002).

There is no doubt that they have missed on many a talented player. But in the same light, they have also improved greatly as the years have progressed. One can also garner a pretty efficient prediction of how teams will project into the future by the rankings of said teams ‘class’ in the years to come.

Especially during the classes projected junior and senior years respectively.

But that is another website in and of itself.

This entry is about the players in the 2009 class that look to have the ‘it’ factor when they step foot on campus for their eventual college of choice. I will simply highlight the people that I think will end up having sensational collegiate careers.

So who are these ‘it’ guys? I am glad you asked:Russell Shepard, QB, Houston, TX: He may not be the highest overall rated player in this year’s crop of recruits, but Russell Shepard definitely has that ‘it’ factor about him. Only 6′1″ and 179 lbs., Russell doesn’t enjoy the overall physical traits that one would label as a top QB prospect.

What he does have is an incredible ability to make plays. And a lot of them. During his senior season in high school, Russell nearly rushed and passed for 2,000 yards apiece in gaining 1,946 yards on the ground and throwing for 1,843 yards in the air.

All told, he rushed for 28 TDs, threw for 20 more, and only threw four interceptions.

The knock on Shepard is his inaccurate and ‘iffy’ ability to throw the ball. That is not an uncommon trait that goes with being labeled as a dual-threat QB. When all is said and done, I definitely look for Mr. Shepard to have a sterling career at LSU.

The Tiger faithful have a winner, and I have no doubt that he will push this year’s freshman phenom Jordan Jefferson for next year’s starting job at QB.

Interview: Jimmy Leach, Digital Director, The Independent: Online-Only ‘Not On The Horizon’

The Independent is unlikely to be sold or go online-only despite growing speculation, according to a senior online executive. Jimmy Leach, editorial director for digital, spoke to paidContent:UK hours after Independent News & Media told the stock market it was looking to sell off unprofitable, non-core assets to maintain a healthy balance sheet despite an “unwarranted” share price slump. Leach, the download fantasy former head of new media at 10 Downing Street who joined the Indie in July, says that an Indie sell-off is not on the cards and that his small team must use social media to drive traffic in lieu of a big marketing budget?

?Independent sell-off? Online-only?: “It’s not on the horizon. Those conversations are above my pay grade but I would have said that [making profit] isn’t why (INM CEO) Tony O’Reilly has newspapers in the first place.” A few people have openly questioned whether the loss-making Indie titles could be sold off and new Evening Standard owner Alexander Lebedev reportedly expressed an interest. But Leach says a more plausible scenario is that INM sells its non-controlling stakes in other companies around the world. Observers have suggested INM scrap the print editions and concentrate on Independent.co.uk?but Leach says that move is highly unlikely.

?Exposure through social media: Independent.co.uk has been busy signing social media partnerships: last November it launched its Independent Minds blogging platform in partnership with LiveJournal; it now has its own YouTube channel and there are content deals with news betting site Hubdub and news aggregator . “If you can’t spend massive amounts on marketing you have to find other ways of doing it,” he says. “You have to go where the audience is rather than expecting them to come to us.” He says that with a bigger budget the paper would consider investing in advertising to draw people into the site, but then he wonders whether that would make sense in the long term.

?Audience vs revenue: Some have questioned whether social media really can lead to increased profits, but that’s definitely Leach’s plan: “The longer the journey they make on the site, the more inventory you’ll sell and the more money you’ll make,” he says. The YouTube deal includes a revenue-sharing agreement, but Leach is realistic about its monetary worth: “YouTube haven’t successfully monetised themselves, let alone [allowing partners] to get a fantastic share? It’s more to drive awareness that we’re here.”

?Low resources Independent.co.uk has quietly doubled its online audience to 8.88 million unique users in November, according to ABCe, compared to 4.6 million a year ago. But the Indie has a fraction of the online staff or marketing budget of its rivals: Leach runs a team of just 10 people. INM group revenues increased 27 percent in the nine months to October, though it is unlikely Independent.co.uk is making a major contribution to profits.

?Associated move: The Indie and the Independent on Sunday will shortly leave their current London Docklands home and move into DMGT’s Associated Newspapers adventure movies office in Kensington. The two companies will reportedly share IT resources and Leach predicts the tie-in to end there: “I’d be quite surprised if there was any editorial sharing. I’m not entirely sure what that will entail, I’m sure they’ll discuss all possibilities.”

(CNN) — The actors of "Slumdog Millionaire" won outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture, and Heath Ledger posthumously won best supporting male actor at the 15th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday.

"It was overwhelming enough to be nominated, but to win this is unbelievable," said "Slumdog" actor Anil Kapoor of the award given to him and his cast mates at Los Angeles’ Shrine Exposition Center.

The cast’s win comes two weeks after the modestly budgeted movie, about a poverty-raised orphan in Mumbai who goes on the Indian version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," won the Golden Globe award for best drama. The film has been nominated for 10 Oscars, including for best picture.

"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," the big name when the Academy Award nominations were announced earlier this week, was shut out at the SAG Awards. The movie leads all films with 13 Oscar nods.

Ledger, who was 28 when he died just more than a year ago of an accidental prescription drug overdose, won his award for his role in "The Dark Knight," 2008’s box-office king.

Ledger’s performance was widely praised, and he won the Golden Globe for best supporting actor two weeks ago. He also is considered the front-runner for an Academy Award for supporting actor.

Actor Gary Oldman accepted the SAG award for his friend. "He was an extraordinary young man with an extra ordinary talent, and it is wonderful that you have acknowledged that and honored that talent tonight," Oldman said.

Josh Brolin, one of four actors who lost to Ledger on Sunday night, compared the SAG awards to "a big campfire we’re all showing up for."

it’s hard to know how many other indemnify-tv providers could say this merest same utensils but are unqualifiedly choosing not to brag, but at&t’s holding nothing back in its latest come out with. the slick operator has proudly come forward and proclaimed that 100 percent of its u-verse tv receivers meet or exceed energy star effectiveness requirements, and all late motorola and cisco set-top-boxes will boast the accompanying energy hero label. not trying to stroke your ego or anything, at&t, but way to be green.

we’ve had another good day here at st francis nicu! we had a lot of wonderful visitors again today - thank you joyce, taylor, melinda, mrs. kisor, jordan, mary avery, john michael, joy, katie, meredith, russell and mike and sharon for visiting us today. it brought us so much joy to visit with each of you!

here’s the little princess - she had a good prime. they brought her back up to almost 60% oxygen but they have been adjusting a a barrel of other things today and tweaking down things so it’s right-minded fine that they brought her back. we met with the doctor today (we can’t say ample wonderful things about dr. gomez) and he was Viagra selfsame bright. he thinks by next week she could be off the ventilator and start waking up. we are looking at probably being here about two more weeks. we are fine with slow but steady progress and just so blessed that our baby is doing so adequately. god has been so good to us i can’t everlastingly as a consequence of him enough.

Columbia City Blog’s pithy observation via Twitter about the new zeitgeist has stuck with us, as has Big Blog’s report from the King County Juvenile Detention Center (”your past is not your future” was all we had to read before choking up yet again).
