Mara Sarhanis of Tewksbury is running the Falmouth Road Race on Tedy’s Team led by New England Patriots Linebacker and stroke survivor Tedy Bruschi. Mara is running in honor her father who lost his life to a stroke in 2006. Her fundraising goal is $1,000 for the American Stroke Association this year.
Mara’s father lost his life to a stroke at the age of 59. He had no prior warning signs and was otherwise in good health. He recently had a physical exam and everything appeared to be normal. When he suffered his stroke he was air lifted from the Cape to Boston, and his family was told his prognosis was good, despite paralysis on the left side of his body. He was given a large dose of Heparin to flush out any remaining clots, which caused a massive bleed to his brain and ultimately his death.
“I ran Falmouth last year in honor of my father, and I know he was with me every step of the way. I will run again this year in his honor to keep his spirit alive and raise money for a cause that needs more answers. The stroke my father suffered came out of nowhere, and they still can’t tell us to this day what happened… I don’t want anyone else to lose their loved one to a stroke,” said Sarhanis.

“The message I want people to know is that stroke can hit any person at any age and come suddenly. Before my father’s stroke I thought it was only people who were unhealthy, who had high cholesterol, who smoked, who were overweight…I never knew it could strike a healthy person,” added Sarhanis.
On Sunday, Aug. 10, the members of Tedy’s Team will be motivated by their stroke heroes when they hit the pavement for the 36th Annual Falmouth Road Race. They will gather afterwards to celebrate the passion and inspiration of Tedy’s Team — the runners’ participation supports Tedy Bruschi’s fight against stroke, and honors both the survivors and the loved ones lost to the region’s No. 3 leading cause of death. The runners are taking a critical step toward raising awareness of stroke and its warning signs, as well as much needed funds for local research and educational programs.
