Microsoft Trimmed Zune/Xbox/WinMo Division Because Its R&D Costs Were High [Microsoft]

microsoft cut the entertainment & devices division’s budget because the group’s r&d costs had skyrocketed in the preceding months—to twice as much as the windows group, said techflash. will this wronged the group’s great products?

Our friend Todd Bishop over at TechFlash did some number crunching, and found that Robbie Bach’s E&D division was an easy target for the slice, because its head was sticking up so much higher than the rest. From the end of 2007 to the end of 2008, R&D spending had increased 37%, by far the most. The total R&D cost for half a year approached $1 billion, whereas Windows R&D only bumped up to less than $500 million. Although Windows made 18 times the profit.

The acquisition of Danger (inventors of the Sidekick) was one legitimate reason for the soar, and a reason why even after cutting, we still might see some slick Windows Mobile 6.5 action, which you can learn about here and here. But we hope that the development of Zune and Xbox, two of Microsoft’s best products in recent years, does not suffer while they’re still improving.

Bishop notes the sudden battery of budget cuts directed to E&D—and particularly layoffs to the games staff—indicates that Microsoft was probably caught off guard by the sudden economic downturn. Check out TechFlash for pretty charts and big hairy numbers. [TechFlash]

Senate Passes Bill To Delay Cialis DTV Switch To June 12

The switch to digital TV will most likely be pushed out to June 12 from the previous Feb. 17 date, after the Senate passed a bill today, Reuters reports. The delay was initiated by President Barack Obama, who worried that consumers needed more time to get coupons that will offset the cost of a $40 converter box. The government ran out of coupons earlier this month, and about 2.5 million Americans are on a waiting list.

Broadcasters are now required to move from analog to digital signals in order to give public safety officials more spectrum, and to allow companies like AT&T (NYSE: T), Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) and MediaFLO, which bought licenses in the last auction, to roll out new services. At least AT&T and Verizon Wireless had changed their viagra online Portugal position recently, saying that if the delay was short enough, they would support it. Others that may be affected by the delay include the Open Mobile Video Coalition, which has been trying to roll out digital mobile TV services. Most likely, they’ll be able to move forward because most broadcasters are already broadcasting on the digital signals, and the switch has more to do with turning off the analog network. While some Republicans in the House are opposed to a delay, the measure should pass in the House before the transition date, the WSJ reports.

Teens Arrested After Several Nasty Queens Muggings

2009_01_qnsbeating.jpg

Boston red sox schedule

four teenagers in queens have been arrested in a series of Draconic muggings, song of which was caught in graphic detail on a surveillance video. they are accused of robbing six men in a string of violent incidents over the last two weeks. one of the victims told ny1, “i felt like i was going to die. you panic. you think, how could this be happening to me? you see it in the movies and you indeed don’t believe its going to happen to you.

Two of the robberies took place in Long Island City where deliverymen from the Bel Aire Diner were making dropoffs in the area. Through a translator, one of them said, “I thought they had a weapon, that’s why I didn’t defend myself; I didn’t do anything. I let them take my money. I let them take everything because I thought they had the weapon or something.”

The four men arrested are ages 18 and 19 from Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx respectively. Below is the video of one of the deliverymen being robbed in a building lobby on January 16. He along with his fellow co-worker and victim have already returned to work at the Bel Aire.
