Reflexology Basics 1
WHAT IS REFLEXOLOGY? HOW DOES REFLEXOLOGY WORK?
Reflexology is a science that follows the principle that the body is reflected in a mirror image of reflexes on the feet, hands and ears. All organs, glands and body parts are able to be stimulated through these reflexes or energy channels or nerve endings, creating Homeostasis. Homeostasis is the correct “balance” of your body and its systems. There are a number of theories and practices, ranging from Zone Therapy, Accupressure and Meridian Channels to Nerve Stimulation. Theyresults. Explained below are the basics of Zone Therapy which is a good starting point to understanding for yourself how to find the appropriate reflexes.
DEFINITION
? To relieve stress ? To improve blood supply and lymph flow ? To unblock nerve impulses ? To help nature achieve Homeostasis “balance”
HISTORY
On the Egyptian tomb wall of Anklmhor the highest official after the king and renown physician, is painted two people working on the feet and hands of two others. The hieroglyphics above the painting reads “don’t hurt me” “I will act so you praise me”. This is believed to have been crafted in 2300 BC. Ancient Hindu statues of Vishnu often are portrayed with symbols marking reflex points on the feet and hands. In China and Japan they have traditions that use corresponding points and have since beyond recorded History. The birth of “Reflexology”as we know it in the west today has been attributed to two key people. Dr. William H. Fitzgerald MD., who was a physician, laryngologist and ear nose and throat specialist, became acquainted with zone therapy in 1902 and started practising it. Using mainly the reflexes on the hands he worked with some therapy as an effective analgesic tool. In 1917 he published “Relieve Pain at Home” in conjunction with Dr. Edwin Bowers. Dr. Fitzgerald drafted the first recognized Zone Therapy charts. Eunice D. Ingham, worked with Dr. Shelby Riley who had worked closely with Dr. Fitzgerald. Through Dr. Riley, Eunice was introduced to Zone Therapy and began to develop her own foot reflex theories in the early 1930’s. Eunice worked on hundreds of people, many of which were thought of as lost causes, teaching them and checking her own theories for validity. As these sick people got better the word spread and Eunice and now her nephew Dwight Byers travelled around America teaching this simple science to Medical fraternities and lay people alike. “Stories the feet can tell”, Eunices first book, was published in 1938. “Stories the feet have told” was soon to follow. Both have been translated into seven different languages and are used as texts for learning to this day. Eunice was the first to map out the foot and hand charts as recognised in reflexology, understanding the body’s mirror image in the feet.
A NOTE TO STUDENTS
Reflexology is not a diagnostic therapy. In any case of illness or symptoms of bodily disfunction, you should always seek medical advise. Reflexology is a complimentary medicine and has great results when used in conjunction with medical consultation. Before applying reflexology you should understand the medical background of the person receiving the treatment. Please follow the precautions as the utmost care and caution should be applied in some conditions.
PRECAUTIONS SHOULD BE USED IN THE CASE OF THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS
? Acute inflammation of the venous and lymphatic system eg. deep vein thromboses, history of blood clotting conditions, inflammation of the lymphatic or circulatory systems
? Acute infectious disease and fevers
? Conditions where surgery is indicated
? Unstable or risky pregnancy, especially first trimester
? Osteoporosis of decalcification of the viagra feet - Use hand reflexes
? Atrophy of the feet, gangrene and extensive infection of the feet - Use hand reflexes
? Lymphatic and active cancer - It is believed that reflexology could accelerate malignancy of lymphatic or circulatory system cancer
? Recent brakes or fractures
? Unstable blood pressure not controlled by medicine
