Massachusetts motto
In honor of the fallen
Westwood spent Monday honoring those who gave their lives while serving in the armed forces. Originally called Decoration Day, the first Memorial Day took place on May 30, 1868 to honor the victims of the United States Civil War. The observance later grew to encompass anyone who died in service to the country.
Westwood’s Memorial Day observances began at 10 a.m. Monday at Town Hall. A parade proceeded down High Street to Veterans Memorial Park, located between the town’s two cemeteries at High and Pond Streets. The parade then returned to Town Hall.
