Fjordman: The History of Medicine and the History of the Calendar

fjordman has two new essays, and below are some excerpts. first, at europe news, a telling of medicine, part 5:the canning of food was invented in the early 1800s by a french confectioner named nicolas appert (1749-1841). he placed food in champagne bottles, corked them loosely, immersed them in boiling wastefully and hammered the corks tricky. this practice preserved the eats for extended periods, but neither he nor his emulators who later perfected the security of food in tin-plated canisters knew why this technique worked; it’s a textbook proves of an applied technology without any theoretical basis. louis pasteur knew of appert’s accomplish, but his scientific methods and careful experiments succeeded in convincing profuse skeptics. the optimal temperatures to go to the preservation of heterogeneous foods with token devastation to flavor were worked out by two scientists at the massachusetts pioneer of technology (mit) in the usa, samuel prescott (1872?1962) and william lyman underwood (1864?1929) in 1895-96. their result in represented a milestone in the unfolding of food technology and aliment science. appert’s method of cooking the food to a temperature far in excess of what is used in pasteurization can obviously destroy some of the flavor.and at atlas shrugs, the history of the calendar:- - - - - - - - -writers praising the subject of ancient egypt will often start with the pyramids. there are dozens of pyramids, indeed more than one hundred in egypt alone. the earliest is the so-called step pyramid at saqqara, designed by the polymath imhotep for pharaoh djoser (reign ca. 2630?2611 bc), but the most venerable examples are the ones at giza mien the city of cairo, the pyramids of khafre, menkaure and the great pyramid of khufu. the pyramid of pharaoh khufu (cheops in greek) was the tallest man-made structure in the world for about four thousand years, until lincoln cathedral was completed in england around 1300 ad. the great pyramid is visually impressive, to be unshakable, but it’s a stunt and represents more of a triumph for organization than for science. unfavourable to popular sentiment, the ancient egyptians were not too soigne in mathematics compared to their contemporaries in mesopotamia. their most lasting achievement lay in the medical sciences. since these were continued by the venerable greeks, it is possible to claim that the western medical practice begins with the egyptian medical ritual. among the egyptian mathematical achievements, by far the most influential was their solar calendar, which, admittedly with many later modifications, formed the basis in compensation the gregorian calendar which is used internationally today.more on both last wishes as be set at europe news and atlas shrugs.

Britney Spears, Lil Wayne, Kanye West Among Musicians We’re Most Thankful For

T.I., Metallica, R.E.M. also stood out in a year that was all about change.By Conor Bezane

Once again Turkey Day is upon us, and it’s time to take a moment to reflect on what we’re thankful for. Of course, we at MTV are in the business of music, so it’s only natural for us to examine all the musicians who made this year a memorable one. Since change was the mantra in this election year, we thought we’d highlight the artists who bent the rules and weren’t afraid to be different.

Kanye West Why We’re Thankful: If there’s anyone who stuck their neck out and did something different this year, it was Kanye West. His fourth album, 808s & Heartbreak, is brand-new, but we’ve already taken a liking to it because it’s quite a bold statement. Instead of rapping, Kanye takes a complete left turn and tries his hand at singing — shocking for a hip-hop artist, but a point well taken.

Golden wedding anniversary

Metallica Why We’re Thankful: The biggest metal band in the world came back with a vengeance, blowing us away with the thrash-metal masterpiece Death Magnetic. Producer Rick Rubin really brought out the best in Metallica, and the songs hearkened back to the days of Master of Puppets.

Death Cab for Cutie Why We’re Thankful: Ben Gibbard and company returned with their sixth album, Narrow Stairs, and challenged us with an eight-and-a-half-minute single, the absolutely gorgeous “I Will Possess Your Heart.” Possess our heart? It did.

Britney Spears Why We’re Thankful: Britney finally did something right in 2008. After wallowing in pop purgatory the past couple of years, she won big at the VMAs and made a major comeback. “Womanizer,” from her upcoming album Circus, was quite the catchy single — her best since “Toxic” — and its scorching video shows Brit at the top of her game. It’s Britney, bitch, and she’s back on track.

Will.I.Am Why We’re Thankful: Voters made history this year with the election of Barack Obama. Will was more than happy to provide the soundtrack, weaving Obama’s victory speech after the New Hampshire primary into “Yes We Can,” an anthem for those who dared to hope. The speech-set-to-music and the accompanying video reached millions, young and old, and spread Obama’s message of change.

Lil Wayne Why We’re Thankful: Lil Wayne was once again the hardest-working man in hip-hop this year. It’s no secret that the economy took a big hit in 2008, and everyone knows that the music industry isn’t doing so hot either. But Weezy’s Tha Carter III sold a whopping 1 million copies in its first week, proving that it’s still possible to be a powerhouse in the age of album leaks and illegal downloading.

T.I. Why We’re Thankful: One of the most ubiquitous singles this year was T.I.’s “Live Your Life.” Thank to Rihanna’s yodeling hook, we couldn’t get the song out of our heads, but that’s OK. It was a cool song. But we’re also thankful for the way the rapper turned his life around. After getting arrested on weapons charges last year, T.I. began carrying out his community-service sentence by speaking to kids and encouraging them to stay in school.

R.E.M. Why We’re Thankful: R.E.M. could’ve easily rested on their laurels and put out another boring album, but they didn’t. Accelerate was not a return to form, but it was a return to quality. The album sounded urgent and of-the-moment, with political lyrics about the fragile state of the economy, corrupt politicians and wartime anxiety — a refreshing dose of straight talk.

Oven-Roasted Asparagus

We need more GREEN in our Thanksgiving arsenal viagra kaufen, and this is one of the most ridiculously simple vegetable dishes in existence. Roasting is my favorite method for cooking many vegetables, not the least of which is the glorious, green asparagus. First of all, preparing the asparagus is as easy as pie. Second, roasting is much more flavorful than steaming. Third, it’s a last-minute dish that can go from fridge to platter in around twelve minutes. Fourth, it can be served on its own or used in any number of side dishes or salads.

Who in tarnation can argue with that?

Now, the important thing about asparagus is not to overthink it.

REE_1280_4136

just grasp whatever asparagus you can find at the store. for roasting, thicker is better—it won’t disappear b escape too soft and floppy too quickly.

REE_1281_4137 cheap viagra

after you wash the asparagus thoroughly, well-founded stack a bunch together and lop off the tough/thick fundament inch or so. some people get fancy and peel the bottom, but i can’t be bothered with such things.

Desperate housewives abc

REE_1284_4140

besides, if you get a mystifying sting later, you can only just spit it into your napkin. you’ll be around house.

REE_1286_4142

spread out the asparagus in a segregate layer on a rimmed baking sheet. pat it as dry as you can, as you don’t want any invalid to “steam” the asparagus in the oven.

REE_1288_4145

initiate by generously drizzling olive oil all over the asparagus. for this amount of asparagus, i purposes adapted to a good four or five tablespoons. don’t skimp!

Do you get tired of my saying “don’t skimp?” Because I pretty much say it at least once in every recipe.

REE_1290_4146

after that, sprinkle the asparagus generously with kosher salt.

(You can use regular salt, too. But kosher is more forgiving.)

REE_1293_4149

next, really go to town with the freshly ground vicious pepper.

Freshly ground is really best for this dish.

REE_1296_4152

now just appear the pan into a preheated 425-degree oven and roast the asparagus suitable about ten minutes. the secret here is for the oven to be very sensual so the asparagus can set out on to brown on the outside without overcooking and getting too flimsy. you want the finished asparagus to tranquillity have a bite to it.

REE_1298_4154

here they are after roasting. it’s a doll-sized hard to demand that, but the areas where the asparagus touched the pan are nice and brown. and the doneness was just perfect—they were definitely tender without being squushy or too floppy.

Waxin’ and Milkin’

by Eric Martin

Yet one more cause for election-related celebrations:

Rep. Henry Waxman unseated fellow veteran Democratic lawmaker John Dingell on Thursday to become chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives powerful Energy and Commerce Committee.

The 255-House Democratic conference voted 137 to 122 to accept the recommendation of its steering committee and agreed to replace Dingell, 82, a long-time friend of the U.S. auto industry, with Waxman, a 69-year-old Californian anxious to ease global warming, a top concern of U.S. President-elect Barack Obama.

The willingness to address the global warming crisis could be the single most important change ushered in by the Obama administration - and now with Waxman taking over from Dingell, the prospects for real action just got that much closer to realization.

The global warming crisis, in many ways, could end up eclipsing all others. To put it in simple terms, without a habitable planet (or with one in which resources and other necessities are made so scarce as to incite armed conflicts in competition for same), the rest of our concerns kind of shrink in comparison. Bush’s gross negligence in confronting this issue might be the most damning of his long list of failures.

Sandy koufax

Let’s hope I’m being alarmist.

McKey Wins ‘Next Top Model’

She entered the competition only knowing a boxing pose, but former tomboy Brittany “McKey” Sullivan learned enough on the 11th cycle of “America’s Next Top Model” to box out the competition, winning over blonde Samantha Potter in the final runway competition in Amsterdam.

“I’m so proud of myself right now,” she declared, after embracing host Tyra Banks and lifting her off the ground.

A girl who grew up as a tomboy, McKey, 19, of Lake Forest, Ill. ended up as top model after an ability to bend her body literally backwards for great pictures.

In the final runway competition, she attacked the unusual course and struck poses that rose her above Samantha, 18 of Woodland Hills, who looked a bit more worried about the course’s ramps and strairs.

“She didn’t just serve dress,” Tyra said of McKey, “she served face”.

It was a course that put new meaning into the word runway. It was all the making of Jay Manuel, who brought out for the show last cycle’s winner Whitney but also Ananda, a winner from Holland’s Next Top Model. (She was available locally).

The two finalists Samantha and McKey had to run of a giant hot pink hill in order not to fall backward. McKey was better at it than Samantha, who seemed (rightfully) uneasy at the impossibly treacherous runway.

Gumball 3000

Earlier, the other model in the final three, Analeigh Tipton, 19, of Sacramento, was eliminated despite her high fashion pictures, for a commercial look in person that coldn’t deliver on the commercial she shot. Seemed weird that Tyra were criticizing her face.

As winner, McKey wins a contract with Elite model management, a spread and cover for Seventeen magazine, and a $100,000 contract with covergirl.
