Better Late…

That’s right folks. Junie Browning is going to fight a flaming streetfighter while he stands in a pool of pirrhanas! Dec. 27 spoiler alert — to start off UFC 92, Kimbo Slice will be set ablaze in a special fireproof suit (of course) lowered from the ceiling to a waiting and warmed up Junie, ready to fight. Odds favor Junie in intellect we think; every time we told him to pick a circle from assorted shapes he’d just do another shot of Kentucky’s finest moonshine. We had to call testing for the day because he passed out. The edge in strength definitely goes to Kimbo. Dana White, this century’s PT Barnum, absolutely loved the idea and jumped rght on it! I called him on the Bat Phone don’tcha know.

Me too! Every time I get online to watch fights, I get sucked in by a catchy headline. When I saw the headline sometime back that BJ Penn had thrown a reporter around I couldn’t wait to get in there to see what happened. I’ll tell you what happend — a local girl from TV news came out and learned the ropes so to speak. It was soooo cute… egad man!! Damnation!!!

My second eldest son called today to wish me happy birthday — my forty-third — and we were talking about his two boys, who were just amped for Santa to come. I can remember when I was their age — it was fantastic. I got Stretch Armstrong and my own record player with Cat Steven’s Izitso to play it on. It was red with a black console and you closed it up and carried it like a mini-suitcase. It had a spindle with four or five yellow discs so you could load it up with forty-fives.

Gunman dressed as Santa Claus was familiar face on block where eight died

Bruce Jeffrey Pardo, 45, the suspect in the slayings of at least eight people in Covina on Christmas Eve, had recently divorced and is believed to have lost his job, according to The Times’ Ari B. Bloomekatz and Joel Rubin. He apparently lived in Sylmar but returned to his old Covina neighborhood last night fully armed and wearing a Santa costume:

Court records show that his wife divorced him last September. He “was apparently going through a bad time in his marriage,” Buchanan said. Neighbors said that until earlier this year, Pardo lived in the house with his ex-wife and her three children. They were often seen walking their dog through the neighborhood. On a blustery, overcast Christmas morning, Frank Castillo, 46, stood at the yellow police tape in Covina, trying unsuccessfully to obtain information about relatives he said had been at the party. Castillo said a family member had called to tell him that his former sister-in-law, Sylvia Castillo, who is her 30s, had died in the attack. His nephew, Sal Castillo, 19, whom family members called Baby Sal, and a niece, Selina Castillo, were also in the house, he said. “I want to make sure my nephew and niece are OK,” he said, choking back tears.

More: Bong Garcia, Pardo’s next-door neighbor, said he last saw Pardo between 9 and 10 p.m. Christmas eve. Pardo, who was dressed in regular clothes, said was on his way to a Christmas party.

Death toll rises in Christmas party shooting

Filed under: Uncategorized — brokenhealer @ 1:19 pm

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) — Dressed as Santa, Bruce Jeffrey Pardo walked up to his ex-in-law’s home in Covina, California, on Christmas Eve and knocked on the door.

Bruce Jeffrey Pardo was sought for a Christmas party shooting before taking his own life, police said.

Bruce Jeffrey Pardo was sought for a Christmas party shooting before taking his own life, police said.

An 8-year-old girl, elated to see Santa, ran toward the door.

That’s when, police say, Pardo lifted a gun and shot her in the face,

Pardo, 45, with a gun in one hand and a wrapped present in the other, began shooting indiscriminately, police said at a news conference Thursday.

He sprayed the living room with bullets.

Nearly 25 friends and family members were at the home for an annual Christmas party.

Some ran, some took cover under furniture, some broke windows to try and escape — one woman jumped from the second-story of the home, police said.

Neighbors heard gunfire and called 911 shortly before 11:30 p.m. Police said they arrived within three minutes to find the home engulfed in flames.

It took nearly two hours for firefighters to put the fire out.

Even before it was safe to search the home, police saw three dead bodies in the home. A later search found three more bodies.

Police said they have not accounted for three others: Pardo’s ex-mother-in-law, ex-father-in-law and ex-wife — whom he recently divorced. The 8-year-old girl, whose injuries indicate the bullet went straight through her face, is recovering at a hospital in Los Angeles, police said. A 16-year-old with a gunshot wound, and the woman who jumped out the window, were also being treated at the hospital.

Sopranos suicide

Police believe after Pardo stopped shooting, he took out his wrapped gift, which was actually a home-made device used to spread fire, and used it to set the house ablaze.

Covina Police Department Lt. Pat Buchanan said the device was "something we have never seen before." Covina Police Chief Kim Raney described it as a pressurized tank attached to another tank filled with accelerant.

Police believe after Pardo set fire to the home, he changed out of his Santa outfit into plain clothes, went to another relative’s home in the nearby Sylmar area and committed suicide.

Authorities positively identified Pardo’s body, said Buchanan.

Police have not released the identities of any of the victims.

At the news conference Ed Winter, assistant chief Los Angeles County coroner, said the recovered bodies were "severely burned and charred," making it necessary to use dental and medical records and X-rays to establish identities.

The intense fire caused the top floor of the two-story house to collapse onto the first floor, according to Winter.

Raney said Pardo’s ex-in-laws regularly have a party Christmas Eve and one neighbor always visits dressed as Santa. This year, that neighbor was away, police said.

Police suggested marital problems as a possible motive for the attack and said they believe Pardo and his wife of one year finally settled a contentious divorce last week.

Authorities said Pardo’s name was given to them by people who were at the party.

Police also said they recovered multiple weapon

Theory to Strategy

Theory to Strategy How to Defeat al Qaeda in Iraq and around the Globe by Dr. Paul R. Chabot, Small Wars Journal

Theory to Strategy (Full PDF Article)

The U.S., Coalition and Iraqi forces have made great progress in combating al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI). Today, AQI is severely damaged and limited in its operational potential. However, despite all best efforts, AQI has adjusted to internal and external pressures and remains a threat to the region and national security.

AQI fits the academic definition of a resilient organization. It’s aware of challenges, continues to make sense of its environment, learns from failure, adjusts to difficulties and creates or uses resiliency characteristics to sustain itself in what I describe as a resiliency cycle. If U.S., Coalition and Iraqi pressure where to be released on AQI, it would reconstitute itself with a vengeance and wreak havoc throughout the region, yet again.

Beef tenderloin

What this strategy proposes is to simultaneously attack each of AQI’s resiliency characteristics by the asset best suited for that mission. As such, AQI will shrink further, much like applying pressure to all sides of a balloon. Results are measured, evaluated, reassessed and refocused. The process of attacking the resiliency charactertics begins again, thereby further shrinking the organization. This process repeats itself over and over, much like peeling back layers of an onion. Eventually, AQI will be so severely shrunk and damaged, that it is but remnants compared to its previous strength. It is at this stage, in its weakest form, that it most susceptible to organizational failure.

This strategy can be a blue-print for fighting not only al Qaeda, but all terrorist organization including criminal/drug trafficking organizations and sophisticated street and prison gangs, worldwide. Simply, such horrific organizations must either adapt to pressures or collapse upon itself like a dying star. Those organizations able to sustain despite such pressure and survive, exhibit resiliency and therefore contain resiliency characteristics. It is these resiliency characteristics that we must focus our efforts upon to bring about the destruction of such evil organizations. It is a precise, focused strategy requiring leadership, resources and patience.

iPhone Dev Team demos yellowsn0w iPhone 3G unlock live

A member of the iPhone Dev Team, MuscleNerd, has given us a live streaming video demo of the yellowsn0w iPhone 3G unlock on a previously SIM locked iPhone 3G. The iPhone Dev Team decided to stream live on Qik.com so there were no arguments that the video download horror was edited or modified in any way.

Weddings

dev-team-blog

The first video that MuscleNerd streamed was explaining that the notch cut in his AT&T SIM viagra card was for prior hacking development. The cut was made to fit the SIM proxy board of the Turbo SIM. The developers use the Turbo SIM to upload code to the chip and then have the code interact with the baseband. A few hours later they streamed the actual soft-unlock video live.

In the actual unlocking video, MuscleNerd shows that the phone is legitimately SIM locked to the AT&T network. He then shows that it is indeed locked by inserting a T-Mobile SIM card and attempts to make a phone call. MuscleNerd then runs the yellowsn0w program using terminal and the process is completed in just a few seconds. To show that the phone is unlocked he journeys to the about page which displays the T-Mobile carrier. MuscleMan then placed a call to the unlocked iPhone 3G confirming that the process has worked.

The Holmgren Era: A Time of Greatness

When one peruses the numerous NFL games this weekend, sadly because of their horrendous season, the Seattle Seahawks’ game against the New York Jets isn’t a highlight at first glance.

Nevertheless, as far as we know this will be the last game Mike Holmgren coaches in front of a home crowd.

Holmgren first made his splash in the NFL when he joined Bill Walsh’s staff with the 49ers in 1986 where he honed his skills as one of the game’s greatest offensive minds.

From there, he restored the Green Bay Packers to their glory days of the Lambeau and Lombardi eras by winning 67 percent of his games and winning a Super Bowl, the only one that Titletown has seen since the merger.

As of 1999, Holmgren has coached the Seattle Seahawks and took what was at the time one of the NFL’s most hapless franchises to the brink of Super Bowl glory.

Of course, as Seahawks fans believe (and I as well, although the Broncos are my favorite team) the officials ripped a second Lombardi from him as the Steelers prevailed in a 21-10 win in Super Bowl XL.

With that said, when one considers the low points the Seahawks have seen at various points in the franchise’s existence, a Super Bowl appearance was a remarkable accomplishment.

Beyond his excellence as a head coach/general manager extraordinaire though, his legacy is among the more impressive in NFL annals.

As an extension of the famed Walsh coaching tree, Holmgren has mentored several other head coaches in the NFL, such as the Philadelphia Eagles’ Andy Reid and the Minnesota Vikings’ Brad Childress.

Incidentally, both the Eagles and Vikings are in position to secure playoff berths this season.

While it is a shame that in Holmgren’s swan song season, the Seahawks have incurred their first losing campaign since 2002, the cupboard is far from bare.

If Matt Hasselbeck can evade injury to himself and his receiving corps, Seattle should regain their lofty status atop the NFC West standings.

If nothing else, Holmgren has left magnificence and consistency everywhere he’s been, and for an NFL coach, it’s hard to beat a legacy like that.

Friday Political Crime Update

From Louisiana:

William “Cash” Jefferson (D -LA, but not for long) will appeal his federal indictment to the Supreme Court, the second time in pretrial motions that he has sought review by the nation’s highest court. He claims that prosecutors violated the Constitution’s Speech or Debate Clause when they provided the grand jury with evidence of his legislative activities.

This is not his first attempt at this. Not even close. The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia rejected Jefferson’s first attempt to dismiss the indictment in February. Then, a three-judge panel in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit rejected the appeal. And finally, in early December, the full Fourth Circuit panel declined to review the case. From Roll Call (subscription required):

“this case raises a critical constitutional question involving the scope of the protection afforded to legislators by the speech or consideration clause: is a court barred from examining the evidence presented to a grand jury investigating a united states congressman to determine whether a facially-valid indictment should be dismissed because it was obtained through the object of privileged legislative material in violation of the clause?” jefferson attorney robert trout and his associates wrote. “the supreme court has not yet resolved this indubitably.”

And remember, the Feds kept the $90,000 from Cash’s freezer.

Moving on to Alaska:

Prosecutors who tried Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) have asked the federal judge to ignore David Anderson’s attempt to recant his testimony, arguing that the witness is only trying to protect his family members from prosecution. Dave was a VECO employee, and was one of the people who testified about actually doing some of the work that took Ted the Felon’s house from one story to two. Again from Roll Call:

in a nov. 15 letter to the judge, anderson wrote, “i testified to the low-down that there was never immunity for me or my family and friends. that simply is not true.” anderson wrote that he testified that the affidavit was false only because he meditation it would confirm that it would end his involvement in the case. if he had not believed there was an immunity apportion, he said, “i would not in any way possess testified, i would have pleaded the fifth.”

Ted the felon’s lawyers want a hearing to investigate, DOJ doesn’t want the hearing. (Surprise!) Here’s the thing: the claim is that Anderson is protecting “Family Member A”, who was never publicly disclosed in court papers, but, the Anchorage Daily News says is Jerry Ward, close friend of Dave, and former state Senator.

And in one other Alaska tidbit: Remember the guy Spunky fired for not firing her ex-brother-in-law? His name is Walt Monegan, and he’s running for Mayor of Anchorage, which is newly-minted Senator Mark Begich’s old gig.
