LEST WE FORGET: Cpl. Santos, a true hero

Editor’s Note: This story is the first in a series of features of Fall River war memorials and the stories behind them.
Cpl George F. Santos was one of the first local boys drafted during World War II. Santos served in the Army for three years before being killed in action outside Rome on Aug. 14, 1944.
Santos, who was widely known for his soccer skills in Fall River, lived on Middle Street.
After briefly seeing action in North Africa, Santos and the rest of his Battery A comrades crossed over into Italy to continue to repel German Forces.
Santos was 26 when died. A monument was erected by friends and members of the Portuguese American Athletic Club after his death. The eight-foot marble monument stands at the corner of Columbia and Broadway, at the foot of Fall River’s largest enclave of Portuguese citizens.
