On last night’s (June 4th) Special Report, Brit Hume said that the “Surge” was “McCain’s idea.” Well, Brit, in the words of the immortal George and Ira Gershwin, “it ain’t necessarily so.” It appears that the Surge was the intellectual brainchild of neo-conservative Fred Kagan who, in consultation with “military and regional experts” such as former Army Chief of Staff General Jack Keane, produced a position paper “Choosing Victory, A Plan for Success in Iraq,” for the conservative American Enterprise Institute. The report advocated for a troop increase in Iraq. The final report, which was released to the press, was entitled “Iraq, A Turning Point (With Reports from John McCain and Joseph Liebermann).” So it doesn’t appear that it was “McCain’s idea.” But if Fox wants to mythologize McCain, this would fit the bill quite nicely. In the immortal words of George Costanza, “it’s not a lie if you believe it.”
