Ennis’ historic St. John Catholic School to close

Here’s a story I’ve written for the paper’s Web page:

St. John Catholic School in drug kemstro Ennis, founded in 1911, is closing due to declining enrollment and financial shortfalls.

Bishop Kevin Farrell of the Catholic Diocese of Dallas announced today that he viagra rezeptfrei bestellen had accepted the recommendation of the parish priest, the Rev. Edison Vela, to close the school.

St. John offered classes from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, but only 138 students had registered for the coming school year.

“The parish and the diocese do not have the money to cover the more than $250,000 deficit we would have with the current low number of students,” said Father Vela, pastor of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church.

Bishop Farrell called the decision “painful” and said the diocese would try to make sure that any St. John student who wants to attend a Catholic school can do so.

Bishop Dunne Catholic School in Dallas will establish a special track for students who would have been seniors at St. John, allowing them receive their diplomas and class rankings from St. John.

Teachers at St. John will be paid through September 30, and will be given preference for open positions they’re qualified for at other diocesan schools.

St. John has struggled with enrollment and financial shortfalls for more than a decade, though parents and parishioners have made “valiant” efforts to keep the school going, the diocese said in a press release.

The prospects finally got too bleak to justify continuing, said Joe Oscar Neuhoff, chairman of the parish finance committee.

“It is very sad, but it is the right decision to make,” he said. “The parish and school have tried to make this work for years and could never figure out a way to secure enough students. The money the parish has had to use to subsidize the school can now be used to support the other important and under-funded ministries of the church.”
