Construction delays are forcing tourists to view Plymouth Rock through a plastic pane. Contractors are waiting for historically accurate ceiling tiles before they can complete repairs to the portico surrounding the rock, said Wendy Fox, spokeswoman for the state Department of Conservation and Recreation.
The work began in March and was planned for completion by June 1, but the ceiling tile problem has delayed the project, she said.

“We’re hoping to be done by the end of August,” Fox said. “We’ve had remarkably few complaints, especially now that tourists can actually see the rock through the Plexiglas.”

Tourists had no view of the rock when the portico repairs began.
Destination Plymouth director Paul Cripps has fielded a number of calls from disappointed tourists, but he says most people are understanding once the problem is explained.

Destination Plymouth and other tourism outlets have posted news of the portico repairs on Web sites, but Cripps said not everyone reads the sites thoroughly.
The portico work is costing more than the $308,000 originally budgeted because contractors found extensive water damage from roof leaks, Fox said.
