Tigers cruise to victory

The Taunton hockey team had been mired in a little slump as of late.So the young and inexperienced Durfee hockey squad was a breath of fresh air for the Tigers on Saturday at Aleixo Ice Arena.Junior Tyler Malaguti scored a hat trick and assisted on another goal to help Taunton get back to the .500 mark with a 7-1 victory over the Hilltoppers. The win evens the Tigers’ record at 7-7 with seven games left on the schedule.“We’ve been actually on a little skid lately, so today’s game puts a stop to that,” Taunton head coach Dan Tripp said. “It’s good to get a win and as you can hear, the kids are having a little fun right now.“It’s there [playoffs] for us, but as I told them, we have to try and get a little better in the next couple of weeks.”Meanwhile, Durfee (0-12-1) is still looking for its first win of the season.“We’re limited on talent and we don’t make any bones about it,” Hilltoppers head coach Todd Whittemore said. “We’re developing young kids that are new to the game. Power plays, five-on-five, it does not matter. We’re just trying to get them involved and trying to get them to learn. We’re proud of the effort they give.”The Tigers wasted little time getting on the scoreboard.Senior James Bilodeau netted the first goal of the contest just 52 seconds in off a face-off inside Durfee’s zone to give Taunton a 1-0 edge. The Hilltoppers retaliated with a power-play goal from Chad Amaral at 12:51 on an assist by Tim Dailey to tie the game at1-1.The Tigers responded by getting aggressive on both ends of the ice, which led to penalties and eventually the go-ahead goal by senior Peter Ciampi from Andrew Mulcahy and Mark Talbot.“It’s a physical game and you have to be able to take it as well as accept it while controlling the puck,” Tripp said. “It’s one of the main aspects of the game. You can’t take that out of your game plan and it’s got to be there for everything.”Taunton managed to kill three penalties in the period that led to two late goals by Malaguti to increase the Tigers’ margin to 4-1. Both of the goals were 10 seconds apart with Brent Leal and Randy Mulhern collecting assists on the play.Junior Kevin Johnson opened the second period for Taunton with a goal from Malaguti and captain Nick Cabral. Malaguti rang up the hat trick at 11:56 on an assist from Johnson to make it a 6-1 contest.Johnson capped the scoring with his second goal of the game, unassisted, midway through the second period.“The keys in every game is taking care of the puck, get the puck to the net and shoot the puck,” Tripp said. “We did that better today than what we did in the past. We played relatively well I thought. All the fundamentals that we have been focusing in on practice, I think we did a better job than what we did in the past five games.”Taunton outshot Durfee 31-13. Tiger goalie Steve Slivinski stopped 11 shots on goal.Chris Bonanca replaced Hilltopper starter Shane Baptista in net after the first period and came up with 14 saves alone in the third period.ssanchez@tauntongazette.com
