Well-deserved praise for Atlantis Charter School’s class of 2008
Under a warm sun and to the applause of more than 400 parents, teachers and well-wishers, 66 Atlantis Charter School eighth-graders marched from the school building where most of them started their education nine years ago. After the singing of the national anthem by Chelsea Mae Dagen, class salutatorian, the 10th graduation ceremony at the only charter school in Greater Fall River was under way. Sitting under a white tent, the graduates were addressed by F. George Jacome, president of the Atlantis board of trustees, who reminded them “no matter where you go from here, the Atlantis experience will always be with you.” Fernando Goulart, Atlantis’ executive director, in his remarks pledged Atlantis will continue to challenge students to achieve beyond what they think they can. He noted that although Atlantis’ philosophy had been challenged at times, “the school’s academic and behavioral standards will not be compromised.” He added that future students should expect standards to be raised “because it’s only through raising expectations and providing the support to meet those expectations that we will see greater student achievement.” Mayor Robert Correia told the students that their parents as well as everyone else in their lives had dreams they wanted to see them accomplish. But he also reminded them that the most important dreams were their own. Correia challenged the students to strive to do well. For in doing so, he said, they would be helping the world to become a better place. Japheth Omonira, the valedictorian of the Atlantis class of 2008, addressed his classmates and thanked all those who played a role in making it possible for all 66 eighth-grade students to successfully complete their studies at Atlantis.
