‘Black Friday:’ Three dead so far

by Mark Silva

Some “Black Friday.”

Wal Mart door.jpg

First a temporary maintenance worker died opening the doors of a Wal-Mart to a bargaining-hunting crowd of human wolves. And now two are dead at a Toys “R” Us.

Lay a little blame at the feet of the government, for exhorting Americans to spend more money and shake off that recession gripping the nation. Lay some blame on the media, for stoking the hype surrounding one day of retailing which is, in fact, nothing more than the first of 28 shopping days left until Christmas, with cable news hawking footage of ravenous shoppers storming the doors of stores opening at 4 am.

And in Palm Desert, California, where police say an argument preceded the shooting at a Toys “R” Us, lay some blame on a gun-happy culture which encourages the resolution of simple domestic disputes with the pulling of a trigger.

“”Some people got into a fight,” said Glenn Splain, manager of a gym across the street from the toy tore. “One of the guys here thought it was over a toy, but it got louder and louder and then there were gunshots.”

Dumoulin

It was an innocent maintenance man, a 34-year-old temporary employee, who was opening the doors at a Wal-Mart in Long Island for bargain hunters early this morning. Police in Nassau said about 2,000 people had assembled outside the store and the first wave trampled the man opening the doors for them.

The door frame was mangled in the crush, and several other people were taken to hospitals.

“This crowd was out of control,” said Nassau County police spokesman Lt. Michael Fleming, descrbing the scene as “utter chaos.”

Retailers already were calling this the worst shopping season in six years. Now it’s unquestionable. If this is shopping, we might be better off with a recession.

Seattle Mariners Are the Next Baseball Powerhouse

Yes, I said it. The Seattle Mariners are the next baseball powerhouse.

In 2008 the Mariners were plagued with injuries. In 2009 the Mariners can win the West.

In 2007 the Mariners were in contention for the playoffs, fighting with the A’s, Angels, Yankees, Tigers, and Indians. In 2009 expect only the Seattle Mariners out of all those teams to even win the playoffs.

The Tigers and Indians are cut out by the Twins, White Sox and even the Kansas City Royals. The Yankees are blocked by every team in their division, all personally projected by me to be in contention all season long. The A’s and Angels are pushed back by the Seattle Mariners a team that has youth, pitching, and even batting.

The Mariners traded for Eric Bedard last February. I previously wrote an article stating that it was one of the worst trades ever but the Mariners are definitely going to be compensated.

Eric Bedard is very similar to Andy Pettite a few seasons back and Pettite came back to a 17-win season that propelled his team to the World Series. Bedard suffered injuries this season, being placed on the 15-day disabled list twice.

J.J. Putz was also on the 15-day disabled list twice. It was a horrible loss for the Mariners especially with Brandon Morrow becoming a starter, an amazing starter at that.

Mike Morse was what I call the Lost Boy of the 2008 season, batting in only nine at-bats during the season after leading the majors in spring training with a .492 batting average. Expect him to be on the roster as well.

Injuries played a huge role in the Mariners team this past season. Players not mentioned include Willie Bloomquist and Carlos Silva. Bloomquist is a necessary part of the team and Silva can be used in the bullpen.

Kenji Johjima lost his stroke in 2008, possibly because Jeff Clement was so highly predicted that Johjima lost hope of being the full-time catcher again. If he regains his stroke it would solidify the catcher’s spot.

Mike Wilson and Greg Halman are future stars, both showing all the tools to be possible stars down in the minor leagues. Expect both of them to be fighting for day to day spots.

Yuniesky Betancourt was amazing at the end of last season batting .343 in September. In this offseason he is training with Mariners MVP Raul Ibanez down in Florida. He could very well have a turn-around year.

The Mariners’ farm system shows no signs of slowing down, with Carlos Triunfel, Adam Moore, Michael Pineda, Philipe Aumont, and Gaby Hernandez showing signs of future success.

Angie martinez

Not all dreams come true. Fortunately for the Mariners, this one will.

Discuss: ‘Southland Tales’

a week ago, i finally tore through alan moore and dave gibbons’ acclaimed particular tale, watchmen, which i’d only recently prompted myself to make the time for after years of recommendations (the recurring threat of ending spoilers fitting for a movie that i’d inevitably see was a catalyst unto itself).it really is a tremendous be employed, and i’m as curious as anyone else to see how zack snyder’s integument turns out, but the one comparison that i kept coming back to was how much watchmen reminded me of richard kelly’s much-maligned southland tales, with each being a sprawling tale of an alternate fact in which several narrative threads are erection towards comprare cialis the presage of a looming apocalypse.between that and the news of kelly’s latest being pushed back, i find myself tempted to give it another look-dream of — especially since my first viewing wasn’t methodically held in the most respective of environments compra levitra online. i’m sure that there’s a method to kelly’s madness, but it’s an indulgent, unpredictable film whose very story density i enjoyed more in and of itself. i doubt that i’d share those sentiments if instead first subjected to the three-hour cannes slice, but if that version were ever released, i wouldn’t be against giving it a spin. (my overall sentiments fall closer to jette’s.)so, what say you, the readers? did you meditate on it? did you stop it? love it? hate it? or maybe, just maybe, did some of you land somewhere in between? (and payment remuneration points, what don’t pimps do?)

ROUSSAK, ANDREW - No Trespassing (2006)

russian born composer and keyboardist andrew roussak serves up a refined production with this creation.

Symphonic rock is the name of the game here, explored in several variations. Classical compositions, psalms and hard-rock tinged flavours of this style are all explored with skill and ease; virtuosic instrumentals and regular songs with a typical verse and chorus structure are both explored; and all variations of styles and sounds fits right in too.

Skilled mix and production highlighting the moods and melodies helps create a distinct album feel to this creation, and although a skilled keyboard player it’s the overall performance that is the focal point rather than Roussak’s individual performance.

Perhaps somewhat lacking in the brilliant tunes department, this is still an enjoyable release; that should cater for the tastes of many people into symphonic rock music. by Windhawk ROUSSAK, ANDREW Music Online: recommended progarchives.com worldwide prog rock stores

BEIJING (AP) — A college student in southern China was bitten by a panda after he broke into the bear’s enclosure hoping to get a hug, state media and a park employee said Saturday.

Don't be deceived. Pandas might look cute but they're not to be trifled with.

Lonely are the brave

Don’t be deceived. Pandas might look cute but they’re not to be trifled with.

The student was visiting Qixing Park with classmates on Friday when he jumped the 6.5-foot (2-meter) high fence around the panda’s habitat, said the park employee, who refused to give his name.

The park in Guilin, a popular tourist town in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, houses a small zoo and a panda exhibit. It was virtually deserted when the student scaled the fence surrounding the panda, named Yang Yang, the employee said.

He said the student was bitten on the arms and legs. Two foreign visitors who saw the attack ran to get help from workers at a nearby refreshment stand, who notified park officials, the employee said.

The student was pale as he was taken away by medics but appeared clear-headed, he said.

"Yang Yang was so cute and I just wanted to cuddle him. I didn’t expect he would attack," the 20-year-old student, surnamed Liu, said in a local hospital, according to the official Xinhua News Agency.

Liu underwent surgery Friday evening and was out of danger, but will remain in the hospital for several days, Xinhua said.

Yang Yang, who was flown to Guilin last year from Sichuan province, was behaving normally on Saturday and did not seem to suffer any negative psychological effects, the park employee said.

He said it was not clear whether the facility would add more signs around the enclosure or put more fences up.

"We cannot make it like a prison. We already have signs up warning people not to climb in," he said. "There are no fences along roads but people know not to cross if there are cars. This is basic knowledge."

Pandas, which generally have a public image as cute, gentle creatures, are nonetheless wild animals that can be violent when provoked or startled.

Last year, a panda at the Beijing Zoo attacked a teenager, ripping chunks out of his legs, when he jumped a barrier while the bear was being fed.

The same panda was in the news in 2006 when he bit a drunk tourist who broke into his enclosure and tried to hug him while he was asleep. The tourist retaliated by biting the bear in the back.
