Milton Friedman Did a Bad, Bad Thing…

He left no students at Chicago.

Uncle Milton said:

But he never explained to any students why government intervention to stabilize the output of the retail banking sector–checking account deposits–was a free market policy (why not some other sector?why not auto production? freight car loadings?).

And he never explained what to do if stabilizing checking account deposits wasn’t enough.

And so now Chicago has nothing coherent or useful or constructive to say about our current situation.

‘Tis the season for seniors

phoEBduvall1208dn001.jpg

Things are never very easy for seniors, especially around the holiday season. And this year is even tougher.

Senior advocates in Whitman, Hanson and East Bridgewater are doing what they can to make sure the elderly aren’t forgotten.

The Home Instead Senior Care facility in East Bridgewater is participating in the Be a Santa to a Senior program, which stretches its helping hand to many South Sore communities. For instance, Duval’s Pharmacy in both Whitman and East Bridgewater are part of the program.

Wisconsin dot road conditions

The campaign has delivered thousands of presents to local, needy seniors over the past four years.

“Especially with the economy the way it is, seniors need to be taken care of,” said Cherie Sasso, the owner of the Home Instead.

The agency works with area retailers, senior agencies and care facilities to gather and deliver gift donations from the community to isolated seniors who might not otherwise receive presents, either because they don’t have local or living family members or because of their financial status.

Prior to the holiday season, local non-profit organizations identify needy and isolated seniors and provide those names to Home Instead Senior Care offices. Christmas trees, which went up at participating locations, feature ornaments with the first names of the seniors and their respective gift requests. Locations include Duval’s Pharmacy in Whitman, 571 Washington St. and in East Bridgewater, 1 Compass Way#101.

Holiday shoppers choose an ornament from the tree, buy items on the list and then return them unwrapped to the donation tree with the senior’s name and ornament attached. Home Instead Senior Care then enlists the volunteer help of its staff, senior care business associates, non-profit workers and others to collect, wrap and deliver the gifts.

“Ornaments are moving more slowly this year,” Sasso said. “People want to donate, but are thinking ‘I’ve got to get [gifts] for my own family.’ But there is still plenty of time left. I hope the community comes out to donate.”

Sasso, who is looking forward to her fifth year of helping seniors, admits to getting choked up when she helps deliver presents.

“it’s career-jerking to behold their reactions,” she said.

In return, Home Instead Senior Care often receives thank-you cards addressed to “Whomever it may concern” or even Santa himself.

“we’ve unceasingly had a arbitrary response,” sasso said.

Last year, more than 26,400 volunteers distributed gifts to deserving seniors. In the past four years since introducing the Be a Santa to a Senior program, Home Instead Senior Care has helped provide more than 930,000 gifts to 568,055 seniors across North America. For the center serving the South Shore, 24 people have signed up to volunteer so far.

Deliveries will be made to seniors with the help of many organizations and locations, including South Shore Elder Services, Bethany House in Taunton, Colony House in Abington and the Councils on Aging in East Bridgewater, Abington and Whitman.

  wait – there’s more

In addition to participating in the program, Whitman seniors can attend the Holiday Get-Together at the Whitman Senior Center Monday, Dec. 22. Lunch will be served at noon, followed by holiday festivities.

Hanson, which holds the annual Hanson Community Christmas in which any needy person or family can receive Christmas gifts, holds a Be a Star board at Maquan Elementary School, 36 School St., Hanson. The board includes giving stars, which lists items that needy seniors request.

“Thankfully, many organizations always step forward to help with toys and children’s items,” said Erin Fox, who is helping to organize the project. “Holiday drives for items for the seniors are not as common. We feel that by focusing our group’s efforts in that direction, we help to make sure everyone in our community is cared for.”

All items should be unwrapped and donated by Wednesday, Dec. 17 in the box in front of the office. The gifts are separated by staff members at the Senior Center and delivered on Christmas Eve.

Recipients for the Be a Star program are generally based on referrals and the Meals on Wheels list.

Monetary donations also are being accepted, which will go toward Meals on Wheels participants. Each meal costs $2, and are delivered to homebound seniors. Hanson Parent Teacher Organization will match any donation up to $500.

‘Righteous Kill’ Curse Spreads To England With Cries Of Tagline Insensitivity [Unfortunate Juxtapositioning]

Fox news las vegas

while we’ve already long-forgotten appropriate her misery—and the onerous sins of its one-sheet—england is only now becoming conversant with with its pacino/deniro double-bed-shitting pleasures. it can’t even seem to get an in-your-face tagline bang on.

From BBC:

The poster for Righteous Kill was displayed at the station where Mr [Charles] de Menezes, 27, was shot dead after being mistaken for a suicide bomber.

Its tagline read: “There’s nothing wrong with a little shooting as long as the right people get shot.”

The Advertising Standards Authority said it breached guidelines on decency.

“We understood the siting of the poster at the station was unintentional, but nevertheless considered that the text had the potential to cause serious offence in that location,” the ASA said in its adjudication.

You gotta love the U.K.’s fastidious propriety standards. Only in England would a governmental bureau dedicated to enforcing ad-manners reprimand a studio for insensitively mounting a poster that mocks a tragic case of mistaken identity set to occur at some time in the future. As a result of their efforts, however, we understand the offending materials have since been covered up, and the title of the movie has been replaced on all marquees with the far more delicate Heat 2: Warmed Over.

Starting your holiday shopping?

Well, take fur off your list!

Khloe Kardashian really-really hopes you won’t buy fur this Christmas.

Jared dudley

The sexy star of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” loves animals so much that she posed starkers in PETA’s hot new holiday billboard campaign, “Fur? I’d Rather Go Naked.”

We love the wild hair too!

Khloe and her whole entire family will unveil the billboard today at noon on Melrose Avenue at Harper in Hollywood.

“Compassion is the fashion this holiday season, so join me in boycotting fur,” says Khloe. “With all the stylish and super-warm things you can wear, it’s easy to have a killer look without killing animals.”

In addition to doing the E! show, Khloe has a website (amazing!) and owns a clothing company and boutique called Dash, located in Calabasas.

An American Hero: Wendy and Lucy

by lauren wissot[wendy and lucy opens today in place of a two-week while under way at manhattan’s film forum. click here for screening information.]

Raul ibanez

wendy and lucy, kelly reichardt’s existential road flicks starring michelle williams as the titular wendy, an indiana gal heading to find hold down a post in alaska, is the american cousin to the dardenne brothers’ l’enfant. both films are calm, simmering, sociological thrillers featuring hamster-on-a-treadmill protagonists whose odysseys to recapture loved ones are set in gesticulation by a put, precarious, money-connected screw up. like the dardennes, reichardt is interested in studying the intricacies of everyday life for those living on the margins?and society’s standoffish indifference to their very existence.balanced the funniest scenes in wendy and lucy are terrible and poignant. “oh, look, there’s a lady in the transport,” a youth remarks to his buddies when he notices wendy literally asleep behind the wheel of her broken-down auto, nonchalantly returning to his conversation as if he’d due pointed out a stray dog. the car mechanic wendy approaches has a hilarious exchange on the phone correctly in vanguard of her, purposely ignoring her. even when he hangs up he doesn’t meet wendy’s gaze, merely tells her to “talk, i’m listening” while he starts on his paperwork. people like wendy with no bank account, no home address (”can’t get a job without an address anyway,” wendy says to one of the few strangers to posture any empathy, an elderly security guard happy condign to have his minimum wage, 8-8 job), not even a cell are basically sub-good-natured. yet we rarely muse on about how poor itinerant workers like wendy are treated because, as reichardt deftly shows, how can you think about people who don’t exist?wendy lives in a proportion world?and further nearly Dick she encounters who deigns to acknowledge her speaks like she’s a part of their own universe to a certain extent than attempting to understand hers. the mechanic offers wendy a do business of “only” thirty dollars to trail her railway carriage, as if thirty bucks is a mite. when she’s strained to pay a fifty-dollar fine an administrator tells her she can use a credit card. the most innocuous statements reveal an outrageous level of unconscious arrogance?even within wendy’s own family. as her world falls apart she reaches out for some connection, to assent to the sound of a familiar raise, only to entertain her sister, who assumes she’s area of expertise also in behalf of a handout, dismiss her outright.the irony is that wendy, who recycles cans and scrounges for spare change, is anything but a panhandler. she’s so down on her luck she has to steal dog subsistence for her inamorata mutt lucy, yet she never complains, remains stoic in the face of barbarous emotional pain. when the kindly security defend offers the use of his mobile she straightaway protests. wendy’s so familiar to using the pay phone, doing what she has to do to survive, not relying on the kindness of strangers, that she’s taken aback when someone offers pinch. all this is told not just through the patient, novelistic script (based on a short story by jonathan raymond who co-wrote the screenplay), but also auspices of williams’ mesmerizing, nuanced performance, through committee words that shows wendy’s backstory better than any words at any time could. it’s attractive that at the screening and q&a i attended, michelle williams said that wendy’s endlessly-present ace bandage around her ankle was a remnant of one of her “bad ideas”?to give up wendy a limp. reichardt had objected, said she didn’t indigence anything “show-offy.” and in this little anecdote lies the reason reichardt is such a formidable auteur. for as good as williams is, the true star of wendy and lucy is reichardt’s exquisite filmmaking. williams is a significant piece of the celluloid work out but she isn’t the puzzle itself. the movie is less prevalent wendy than about the environment surrounding her, how shell forces collide with human relatives, bringing us to a deeper savvy comprehension or of ourselves. reichardt gently molds williams within her lens, shapes her amidst the breathtaking oregon landscape and the naturalistic small town atmosphere, placing her into a larger frame a
