Samuel Huntington, 1927-2008

samuel huntington, one of the nation’s greatest political scientists, has died. huntington, who taught at harvard university as a service to 58 years, passed away tuesday, december 24, at his home in martha’s vineyard. he was 81.

the harvard gazette has a lengthy necrology, and the caucus has a brief note on huntington’s more recent deep controversies.i’ve never met huntington, but i’ve read two of his books - my favorite is state edict in changing societies - and many of his academic articles. his recent book on immigration and governmental culture, who are we? the challenges to america’s national oneness, is the essential primer on the conservative cultural foundations of the american democracy.huntington generated tremendous attention with his 1993 article in foreign affairs, “the clash of civilizations?” powerfully argued till contentious, huntington’s belief that cultural conflict would mark post-common cold war american foreign policy and international relations gained prophetic acclaim after the september 11 attacks. robert kaplan, writing at the atlantic in december of 2001, placed huntington’s work in surround:the anarchist attacks on the exultant swap center and the pentagon highlight the tragic applicableness not just of huntington’s ideas about a clash of civilizations but of his entire life’s contrive. since the 1950s he has argued that american society requires military and intelligence services that think in the most tragic, depressed terms. he has worried for decades about how american security has mostly been the result of sheer luck?the fortunes of geography?and may identical day have to be truly earned. he has written that liberalism thrives only when security can be taken for granted?and that in the future we may not have that luxury. and he has warned that the west may one day have to spirit for its most cherished values and, undoubtedly, physical survival against extremists from other cultures who despise our provinces and who will embroil us in a civilizational war that is real, even if civil leaders and polite punditry must call it by another tag. while others who hold such views have establish both happiness and favor working among like-minded thinkers in the worlds of the corporation, the military, and the intelligence services, huntington has resolutely remained in the liberal bastion of ivy league academia, to refute for his ideas on that lonely but life-and-death guise.the harvard obituary features numerous comments from friends and colleagues indicating how much huntington loved subjecting his ideas to critical examination.he will be missed. my thoughts and prayers go out to the huntington family.

Under the Radar

financial whiz felix salmon and media maven jeff bercovici post 24/7, but i am ushered up the aisle and into seat 2b only once a week. that means there are dozens of topics i should have covered and lots of obligation-travel news that didn’t rather reckon the cut.i hate to neither here nor there a upright the year leaving anything insensible, so here are some sharp bites of the business-travel apple that we easily could arrange talked about in more cite chapter. don’t assume the relative brevity of the coverage means these topics are any less prominent.registered traveler’s unclear future the same post-9/11 legislation that federalized airport custody and created the transportation security supervision empowered the t.s.a. to permit privately run programs for “trusted travelers.” congress knew federalized procedures would be burdensome, invasive, and time-consuming, so it wanted private enterprise to produce security-bypass plans for high-frequency, low-gamble business travelers.unfortunately, the t.s.a. didn’t. it has spent seven years making it virtually impossible for outsiders to profitably create and carry on what has become known as registered traveler. the t.s.a.’s “not invented here” mindset has crushed third-party innovations along the same lines as scanners that would allow travelers to keep their shoes on during security screenings. the workings permits no form of security bypass for any flier. it has even created a kooky kabuki at the checkpoints: registered travelers, whose membership cards are embedded with biometric data, may still be required to show photo id.that has decimated the market for programs like clear, the private plan created by newsmonger and entrepreneur steve brill. hobbled by t.s.a. intransigence and their own hubris, brill and his competitors now can’t suggest much besides “line cut” privileges at security checkpoints. fewer than two dozen u.s. airports compel ought to signed up—important travel hubs such as dallas/fort worth, chicago, houston, minneapolis, and detroit haven’t bothered—and only about 250,000 recurrent fliers have joined.things aren’t indubitably to gather better in 2009. immature t.s.a. bosses under president obama might look more kindly on registered traveler programs, but the harsh smidgin in travel since labor period means frequent fliers doubtlessly won’t needfulness to shell out $200 or more to bypass lines that have in great measure disappeared.lufthansa’s wholly german empire as airlines around the time have coalesced into unshackled “alliances” with grandiose names like oneworld and skyteam to better them compete on a global scale, the german carrier lufthansa has gone much further. buttressed by a unite of mighty hubs in frankfurt and munich and buoyed by its feel on the homegrown german furnish, lufthansa has chosen to gobble up as many competitors as logic and finances allow.it started with the 2005 purchase of swiss cosmopolitan, the successor to swissair, which came with a compact, efficient hub in zurich. this year, lufthansa added three more useful carriers: brussels airlines, bmi of britain, and austrian airlines. brussels has a good network of intra-europe flights and an admirable web of connections to africa. austrian airlines has a hub in vienna that offers excellent assistance throughout eastern europe. and bmi (formerly british midland) has more takeoff and deplaning slots at london’s heathrow airport than any bearer except british airways. but it doesn’t end there. starting in february, lufthansa’s new italian division will enter on service from milan’s malpensa airport, a potentially profitable heart inexplicably abandoned earlier this year by alitalia. lufthansa also has a strong air in scandinavia via its star alliance partnership with sas. the star alliance also brings partnership with solid asian carriers (singapore, all nippon, and thai) and three north american airlines: air canada, united, and us airways. lufthansa also hedged its american bets matrix year by purchasing a 20 percent wall in b mark off in jetblue airways.passenger rights, wrong-headed crusaders when northwest airlines stranded thousands of passengers and hundreds of flight

At least one death has been attributed to storms that hit all over the country in the past week. A 44-year-old Massachusetts man died Friday when a tree limb weighed down by snow fell on him, authorities Cialis said.

Forecasters say there’s more cold weather to come.

Authorities urged motorists in north-central and northeast Iowa to stay off roads because of poor visibility caused by blowing snow. Authorities prohibited tow trucks from operating on U.S. Highway 20, near the border with Minnesota, because of concerns the tow trucks would get stuck.

Forecasters said wind chills of 20 below and 30 below zero were possible in much of the rest of the Midwest, prompting wind chill advisories and warnings for the region into Monday morning.

Blizzard warnings also were expected to be in effect into Monday for parts of Maine and western parts of Michigan’s lower peninsula.

In much of Maine, between 10 and 18 inches of snow was expected to fall Sunday and Monday, the weather service said. Whiteout conditions were expected at night, with wind gusts of up to 45 mph, the weather service said.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation ordered snowplow drivers off the road until Sunday morning in 13 southwest counties, because of poor visibility, blowing snow and wind gusts up to 40 mph, an agency spokeswoman said Saturday.

Don’t Miss

The western U.S. has also been hit with the cold blast. Parts of Washington saw 2 to 3 feet of snow last week. On Friday, two buses carrying 80 people collided on a road in Seattle and crashed through a metal railing, where they hung over a freeway for several hours before two trucks rescued them.

Many roads in Walla Walla, Washington, had yet to be plowed by Saturday, and the only practical way to drive on them was to have chains on tires, iReporter Aaron Cloward said.

Cloward, a native of Salt Lake City, Utah, said he had "never seen roads this bad or snow this bad." He also said he’s been unable to free his car.

"Everything is sold out — snow shovels, ice melt, salt, chains … so I don’t know how to get out," he said.

Monserrate: Girlfriend’s Injuries Were Accidental

2008_12_hirmm.jpg

state senator-elected hiram monserrate issued a account after being arrested after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend with a broken glass?requiring her to get 20 stitches for a gash above her left eye (she also had a black eye). monserrate, who is a former police officer and an outgoing big apple councilman, said the whole thing was a “terribly unfortunate accident” with girlfriend karla giraldo.

The statement also read, “As a result of an unfortunate accident in which I was involved and which involved also someone to love and I care deeply, I am accused of crimes they did not commit and that I am incapable of committing… As a son, a brother and a father, these accusations are offensive, and they are crushing on a personal level.” Monserrate claimed the accident occurred when “I brought her a glass of water, I leaned over and tripped.

However, prosecutors said that the couple had been arguing and that Monserrate allegedly broke the glass and hit Giraldo in the face with it. As for why Giraldo was taken to Long Island Jewish Hospital instead of Elmhurt Hospital, which is much closer to Monserrate’s apartment, where the incident occurred, that’s explained too: “I took her to Long Island Jewish Hospital in Queens because my family has received excellent medical care there in the past.

The NY Times reports that the Queens DA’s case is “complicated by the fact that Ms. Giraldo, 30, is now saying that it was an accident and, according to a law crime movies enforcement source, is not cooperating with prosecutors.” Giraldo’s cousin Jasmina Abril de Rojas told the NY Post, “She told me everything was an accident. He’s innocent of the charges because, as a human being, he is not an aggressive person. He’s always been a nice person, willing to help anyone… From what I understand, Senator Monserrate didn’t hit my cousin or even threaten her.”

Monserrate, a Democrat who was elected to the State Senate this past November, still intends to head to Albany. However, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer told the Daily News, “Mr. Monserrate should immediately recuse himself from any role in his remaining days on the City Council, and for any matters in the state Senate, pending his resolution of these incredibly download sci-fi movies serious charges.”
