Springfield man arrested after beating
A Springfield man was arrested Saturday night for allegedly beating and trying to choke his estranged wife after breaking into her home.Steven Matthews, 39, of the 2000 block of Randall Court was taken to the Sangamon County Jail following the incident, which happened between 9 and 9:45 p.m. at the wife’s home in the 1300 block of East Edwards Street.Police had been to the home earlier in the day because of an argument between the couple, but there was no crime and Matthews left, so police left.However, when they returned about 9:45 p.m., the victim told Matthews had pushed in the window and climbed through. She armed herself with a golf club, which he took away and then grabbed her by the neck and choked her while threatening to kill her, the woman told police.Matthews then tried for 20 minutes to talk her into getting back together with him. Every time she said no, she said, he punched her. She eventually told him they could get back together so he would stop hitting her. Matthews went outside to retrieve a bag of his clothes, at which time the victim quickly dialed 911 and set the phone down so there was an open line, which prompted dispatchers to send police to the home.
