My impressions from the weekend

Huge win for UT women’s hoops

Gail Goestenkors captured a huge win in her second season at Texas. The Longhorns’ 73-59 win over Tennessee is the kind of win that gets the notice of recruits while also giving an unproven bunch a nice shot of confidence.

There are only about 15 really good women’s basketball teams in the country and Texas is one of them. If the Longhorns continue to play the kind of defense they played Sunday, they will have a chance to win some big games and those big ones are coming up in conference play, particularly against Texas A&M and Texas Tech.

Romo’s health a concern

Dallas will make the playoffs if it beats Baltimore in the last regular-season game at Texas Stadium but they can’t beat the Ravens without Tony Romo, who has a strained back. Surely he will spend the next few days doing nothing. This would be a good time to get a healthy Marion Barber back.

Jerry Jones hurt this team by not getting a good backup quarterback before the season. No Romo means a loss to the Ravens.

Congrats to UT volleyball

Who says Texas teams don’t make it to Omaha anymore. Just kidding, UT baseball, but that was fun watching the UT volleyball team earn its first Final Four berth since 1995 with a win over Iowa State.

Jerritt Elliott isn’t satisfied with just making it there. He believes he has a team that’s good enough to win this thing. It won’t be easy against Stanford in the semifinals but losing to Stanford is a lot less painful than losing to Iowa State and not making it the Omaha.

The balance of power is shifting in the NFL

The NFC was once thought to be a cakewalk for the New York Giants but now it appears the Giants peaked too soon. With Brandon Jacobs on the shelf and Plaxico Burress’ days in the Big Apple likely over, the defending champions are no longer the pick to get to the Super Bowl.

This thing is wide open now. It could be the Carolina Panthers, who play the Giants next week. It could be the Dallas Cowboys, who are just dysfunctional enough to do the unexpected and win a couple of playoff games. Or it could even be the Philadelphia Eagles, if they can somehow sneak into the postseason.

Isn’t it great talk about the playoffs knowing that these teams aren’t going to have to rely on some stupid computer or some stupid coaches poll to determine which teams play in the big games?
