TIgers tops in town

Friendly rivalry? The battle for Ardmore?
Call it what you want, but the Tigers came out on top Tuesday.
Ardmore rode forfeits in five weight classes to a 63-10 win over Plainview. The Tigers, however, didn’t settle, winning the next two matches in a combined 44 seconds thanks to pins from Jimmy Langford (119 pounds) and Cory Holmes (125).
“We knew our goal was to win a majority of the matches contested,” Ardmore coach Richard Dabbs said.
The Tigers did just that, jumping out to a 46-0 lead.
Things heated up at 152 pounds when Plainview’s Wes Davis and Ardmore’s Brandon Skinner provided the first competitive match of the evening. Davis took a 7-2 lead, but Skinner hung on into the third period.
Davis ultimately pinned Skinner with 6 seconds left in the third for the Indians’ first points of the night.
From there, the matches were tests of endurance, with familiarity coming into play as the weights increased.
Ardmore’s Josiah Custar and Plainview’s Logan Good had a three-period grudge match at 160 pounds. Custar eventually won 5-2, handing Good his first loss of the season.
“We’re friends off the mat and enemies on,” Good said.
“We’ve worked out together,” Dabbs said of Plainview and Ardmore’s relationship. “Toward the end of the season we’ll see more of each other in the practice room.”
Ardmore went into the match of the night with a 57-10 lead. At 215 pounds, Ardmore’s Shawn Smith and Plainview’s Santana Burris squared off in another three-period brawl, which saw five stops in action to stop Smith from bleeding.
“We’re the bruiser brothers,” Ardmore heavyweight Michael Reed said about him and Smith. Smith battled through four stops in the action before his forhead was finally bandaged. Then, he cut his lip with the score tied 1-1.
But the senior scored a last-second takedown on Burris in the third to secure the 3-1 win. As for Reed, the heavyweight pushed his record to 16-0 with an 11-3 win over sophomore Tyler Winnard.
“I haven’t wrestled a heavyweight in better shape than me this season,” Reed said. “That’ movies to download;s a credit to my coaches.”Erik K. Horne, (580) 221-6522 erik.horne@ardmoreite.com
