Ready to Rumble Sunday at Fed Ex
It’s come down to this, a divisional game in Week 16, a must-win situation against an honored old rival in weather conditions that will be wet, cold, windy and —yes, snow is forecast. Let us also be reminded that the Washington Redskins kicked Eagle tail back in October.
Missing on Sunday for the 4:15 PM start will be Eagles WR Hank Baskett, who suffered a sprained knee ligament against Cleveland. WR Kevin Curtis is doubtful to play, which means Reggie Brown is likely to get the call to arms as McNabb’s prime target. Brown has done well in the past against the Redskins’ man-to-man coverage, but he has not played a lot this season. If for any reason he falters, Brown may give way to a Brian Westbrook split out wide. The Eagles have been running practice plays with Westbrook set as a wideout. Be prepared…
Other key players will be asked to motivate themselves to step up to fill in the missing pieces at receiver positions, such as Jason Avant, DeSean Jackson and Greg Lewis. Donovan McNabb in fact made a statement to the Philadelphia Inquirer that all his guys need to self-motivate in what may be their entry-key game to the playoffs. McNabb is still a little miffed about being benched in the Baltimore game in order to motivate the team to play better. “For me to be used as the guy to motivate other guys (by being benched), I really don’t think that was needed,” said McNabb.
Wetness, cold and possible snow may turn this thing into a running game. Eagles’ reliable LG Todd Herremans may not be able to play due to a shoulder injured against the Browns. That means rookie offensive lineman Mike McGlynn (6′4″, 311 lb.) could get his first start in the NFL. McGlynn is a 4th-round draft pick out of Pittsburgh who is affectionately known as “Big Greezy”. The big guy says he’s ready, and he did get in 15 plays last week against Cleveland. You can bet he’ll be looking to Tra Thomas and John Runyan for helpful housecleaning tips.
I personally think RB Correll Buckhalter will get plenty of touches both running the ball and receiving short flare passes from McNabb. Buckhalter has never looked so good or ready as he is playing now.
I don’t think Washington is going to quit or make it easy for the Eagles. These divisional games with a huge history behind them always seem to go in unpredictable or unusual directions. Washington’s pride and the salvation of head coach Jim Zorn’s job is on the line. And if you believe in ghosts, look out for heavenly assistance from the late Sammy Baugh.
I’m ready to rumble; what a game this will be. Prepare to be excited, Eagle fans, and possibly delighted. But it won’t come easy; it never does.
