Jeannine Olney is a runner.So, when she heard that Clinton’s Jon Bellona had organized a cross-country “Run for the Fallen” to honor his Hamilton College roommate killed in Iraq in 2005 and had invited others to participate by organizing one-mile local runs, she took off.Sunday, one version of the run will be held at the B-52 site on Perimeter Road at the former Griffiss Air Force Base. Another run will be held that morning at Hamilton College to honor Lt. Michael Cleary, Bellona’s friend and a 2003 graduate of the college.The Rome run will honor six Oneida County soldiers who have fallen in the line of duty – Pfc. Gregory P. Huxley Jr., Capt. George Wood, Sgt. Michael Uvanni, Sgt. Elisha Parker, Cpl. John Sigsbee and Sgt. Christopher C. Simpson.“Chris Simpson was a friend of all three of my children, and his fiancé (Carol Freis) is like a daughter to me,” Olney said. “I’m a Roman Runner, so I thought, why not do something for Chris? Why not do something for all six boys?”The local runs will coincide with the conclusion of Bellona’s run, which began in California and will end Sunday at Arlington National Cemetery. Bellona and fellow 2003 Hamilton graduates and others will complete a 4,100-mile trek that day. They have planted an American flag every mile to honor all the men and women who have died in the service in the Middle East. Olney also has a connection to Uvanni, having gone to Rome Free Academy with his father, Kevin Uvanni.“It really hit me,” she said. “It’s a nice thing for us to remember.”Olney said she has no idea how many people might attend the run. She said she expects some local dignitaries, and at least some of the parents of the fallen local soldiers. She emphasized that you don’t have to have known any of the men to participate, and you can run for any fallen soldier you know.The run/walk is just a mile, but you can run farther if you like. There is no fee. You can print a runner’s bib off the national Web site, www.runforthefallen.org, and e-mail Olney at bejeweledrunner@yahoo.com for a release forms, then bring the bib and release forms to registration Sunday, which begins at 8 a.m. at the B-52.The Hamilton run will begin at Siuda House, the college’s admission’s office, on Campus Road at 8 a.m. The run/walk will end at the Blood Fitness Center, where refreshments will be served.
