Texan gets 6 years for cocaine delivery

A 30-year-old Texas man was sentenced Tuesday to six years in federal prison for driving 28 pounds of cocaine to Wichita.

Jorge Martinez-Soto of El Paso, Texas, pleaded guilty to one count of transporting drugs across state lines, said Acting U.S. Attorney Marietta Parker. Martinez-Soto also had admitted to illegally using the telephone to traffic in drugs, another federal offense.

Martinez-Soto and another man were indicted in April, after the truck they were driving was pulled over by a Kansas Highway Patrol officer for a safety inspection.

The officer found the truck partially loaded with used tires — and cocaine.

In his plea, Martinez-Soto admitted that he was hired in El Paso to drive a 1997 Kenworth truck to Wichita bearing the markings “TJ Express.” Martinez-Soto said he knew there was an illegal drug in the truck, but he didn’t know it was cocaine.
