Danny Henley: An additional sign of love

Danny Henley mug

How do you express love to those you care most deeply about?

A couple of years ago, Nancy, my wife, and I read a book by Gary Chapman that identified what he called the five love languages: words of affirmation, quality time, receiving gifts, acts of service and physical touch.

While those may be the major categories through which love may be demonstrated, it is by no means an all-encompassing list, as I recently realized.

Last week I was able to take a few days off work. Typically such an opportunity might translate into me getting up early to greet the dawn of a new day with a camera in hand. Sometimes it might mean traveling somewhere to see family and/or friends.

Normally such a precious commodity as time off is not squandered by spending half a day shopping, but that is what I found myself doing on Day One of my five days off.

Green river killer

After Anna, my 12-year-old daughter, came down with a nasty bug the previous Sunday, I assumed that the first day of my mini-vacation would be spent watching her while Nancy and our oldest son, Caleb, went shopping. However, by Wednesday, with Anna full of vim and vigor again and her temperature and headache a thing of the past, Dr. Mom declared her fit for an excursion. This was not going to be any ordinary pick-up-a-loaf-of-bread-at-the-store-be-home-in-20-minutes shopping trip. The primary objective of this excursion was to find fabric.

Nancy had recently received in the mail what amounted to a chain letter. Typically such a piece of postage entails receiving a note in the mail and being “obligated” to forward the message onto a set number of people. The letter Nancy received contained a swatch of material. As best I understood my wife’s explanation, her objective was to find and purchase some matching material. She would then send some of it to the person at the head of the chain list and additional material to four friends.

I’ve learned over the years that a trip fabric shopping is never a quick one. While for many people shopping is an experience to be savored and hence not be rushed, normally that’s not my dear wife’s philosophy. In most instances, her goal is to get in, get what she needs and get out.

However, when Nancy enters a fabric store, it’s as if time almost comes to a standstill. The passage of an hour seems like only minutes when she is trying to find just the right match for a color.

Despite knowing that I could well be entering this space-time aberration, I opted to accompany Nancy on the outing. As we drove to our first stop, I attempted to express how much I care for her. I explained that even though I knew I’d be ready to leave far sooner than she would be, I was willing to go fabric shopping because spending time with her is of greater significance than being bored senseless.

For my expression of love I was anticipating a look of affection, a kiss on the cheek or even a pat on the hand. Instead, my bride looked at me, smiled and said, “Now you know how I feel when I go with you when you’re taking pictures.”

It opened my eyes to the fact that on those occasions when Nancy has ridden “shotgun” with me during one of my photo excursions, she was actually showing me how much she loves me.

In the Bible, John 15:12-13 quotes Jesus as saying, “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.”

While not laying down their physical life, the love of a husband and wife can be expressed by their willingness to spend time together, even though it means one of them may be bored to “death.”

SHG Football Notes: Lemont athletic director has ties to Cyclones

When it gets down to two schools playing for one state football championship, the world somehow finds a way to get smaller.

Lemont High School and Sacred Heart-Griffin are separated by 179 miles of mostly interstate highway. But as the schools prepare to play Saturday for the Class 6A title, they are connected by athletic directors who once worked together.

Acela train

John Young is the athletic director at Lemont. In the winter of 1987-88, he was a student at MacMurray College, where he played defensive back for the football team. The coach was Robin Cooper, who left Griffin High School to start the MacMurray program.

“I went to Sacred Heart-Griffin and asked them if I could student teach there in the upcoming fall,” said Young, who was a high school teammate of current Chatham Glenwood assistant football coach Vondel Edgar at Mount Zion. “I wanted to go learn from Ken Leonard, the Sacred Heart-Griffin tradition, what it would take to be a successful football coach.

“It was a good start. Kenny was great from the get-go, real nice to me. He gave me the opportunity to be the sophomore defensive coordinator and the outside linebackers coach on the varsity as a student teacher.”

That 1988 SHG team — that was the first year of the merger between Sacred Heart Academy and Griffin — lost in the second round of the playoffs to Peoria Central. But a bond was formed.

“Sister Mary Paul opened the door to let me work with Ken and Helen Dulle, consummate pros,” Young said.

Young never became a head football coach. He was an assistant at Marian Catholic before getting into athletic administration.

“He was a go-getter, just like he is now,” Leonard, who doubles as football coach and athletic director at SHG, remembered of Young.

“A great kid, great guy. You could tell he was going to be a success in whatever he did. He was going to do it the right way, with hard work. He’s a guy you’d love to have on your staff.”

From catcher to pass catcher

Colton White played freshman football at Sacred Heart-Griffin but then decided to concentrate on baseball. But after making the All-Central Eight Conference baseball team as a junior catcher last spring, White decided to return to football.

“Dominic Walton convinced me over the summer,” said White, a wide receiver on offense and, after Saturday’s performance at New Lenox Providence, a starter on defense. “I was at Dominic’s house and he talked me into it.”

With free safety John Lantz hobbled by cracked ribs, White got a chance to play outside linebacker as the Cyclones shuffled personnel in their 24-17 win over Providence.

“He’s a hitter,” Leonard said, and he wasn’t talking about White’s .366 batting average as a sophomore and .409 mark as a junior.

“He’s become a player.

“This week, he’s a big part of our defense. He’s a big, strong kid. He can move.”

White, who calls himself a baseball player who is playing football, thought about returning to football last year. But he’s glad he’s back for the Cyclones’ state title run, and he really enjoyed playing defense.

“Awesome,” he said. “Unfortunately, I got my chance because of John getting hurt. I felt pretty comfortable. The coaching staff does a great job getting us ready.”

White has two receptions for 13 yards. But don’t look for him to go Keyshawn Johnson or Terrell Owens.

“With the playmakers we have . . . John, Dom, Adrian Cave . . . those are just great players,” White said.

White will attend Lincoln Land Community College next fall and play baseball.

Title game tickets

Tickets for the Class 6A state championship game, which will be played at 1 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Champaign, are on sale today and Wednesday from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Main Office on the SHG East campus.

All tickets are $10.

Lantz’s ribs well padded

In order to play Saturday against Providence, Lantz was “padded to the hilt,” according to trainer Pete Stoll from AthletiCare.

Lantz had rib pads, memory foam and “ballistic material like a flak jacket,” according to Stoll. “But if they hit you, you know you got hit,” he said.

Whether a rib is cracked, broken or bruised, the treatment is same, according to Stoll.

“Ribs are ribs,” Stoll said. “It’s not like a broken leg or arm. It’s a breathing thing. When you can breathe comfortably and move, do the things you need to do as comfort allows, then you can play.&# …

Tech-Savvy Secrets to Getting the Best Black Friday Deals

Blackfriday

The day after Thanksiving, aka “Black Friday,” is a great time to score deals, as hundreds of real-world and online stores choose that day to lay on the discounts.

Sadly, while we’d like to believe retailers are slashing prices on November 28 out of the generosity of their executives’ pinstriped little hearts, it ain’t necessarily so. Given the nature of capitalism, you can count on businesses offering plenty of wacky rip-offs mixed in with the real deals. So you’ve got to tread carefully in your search for the best deals.

Thankfully, in addition to winning Obama the presidency, the powers of the internet and of mobile gadgetry can help you survive this consumer brouhaha without walking out of Best Buy feeling like a chump.

Here’s a list of tech-savvy shopping tips for finding the best deals and getting the most from your hard-earned dollars.

Korg 1. Use your phone’s mojo Have an iPhone? Now’s the time to put it to good use. Download SnapTell [iTunes], a free app that can automatically identify a CD, DVD, book or video game and look up pricing and ratings online simply by snapping a photo. No, it doesn’t scan the bar code; it just recognizes the image of the product and shoots you the information. So before throwing that $15 copy of Iron Man into your shopping cart, stop and think for a second about whether or not that’s really a good deal. Better yet, snap a photo of it just to make sure.

Turkey stuffing

Don’t have an iPhone? Most smartphones, such as the Android-powered G1, have barcode-reading software that can look up even more products on the web.

Don’t have a smartphone? Chances are your handset at least has a crappy internet browser that can look up PriceGrabber to see how cheap the product runs for online. Or you can use Google SMS to look up product prices by sending a text message. Just send a text message to 466453 (GOOGLE on your phone’s keypad) and put the word “price” plus a product name in the message. For example: price ipod 40gb. Google will reply with one or two text messages containing pricing info it’s found on the web.

2. Check the web before standing in lineThis seems like a plainly obvious piece of advice, but you’d be surprised at how easily the hype of Black Friday mesmerizes shoppers into sleeping on lawn chairs outside stores, waiting for a gadget they could buy for the same price online. Really, just check the internet before committing to lining up for that $300 laptop that you could get for the same price — and much less hassle — on Amazon. Here’s a collection of Black Friday and discount sites (some provided by Datamation) to cross compare with that Best Buy catalog that arrived in the mail:

The Thunder Lose To The Hornets, Take Two [Nba Closer]

chris paul had a triple deceitful in the hornets 109-97 win upon the thunder. with 29 points, 16 assists and 10 rebounds, paul had help from david west who scored a time-apex 33 points. oklahoma municipality, who fired their coach p.j. carlesimo saturday was playing under the guidance of interim coach scott brooks. incontestably the trade wasn’t enough, as the thunder dropped two games to the hornets in as many days.

? The Rockets won their fifth in as many games with a 100-95 win over Orlando. Yao Ming, my new favorite commercial star, had 22 points and 13 rebounds. Tracy McGrady and Rafter Alston each had 17 points while the Magic’s Jameer Nelson led his team with 21 points and six assists. Dwight Howard spent the game in foul trouble and was not much of a factor.

? Dwayne Wade, Yao’s commercial co-star, scored 38 points helping the Heat recover from 15 points down to beat the Pacers 109-100, despite feeling flu-like symptoms. Maybe it was something he ate.

? Despite playing with only seven players, the Knicks knocked off the Wizards 122-117 in an offensive battle. Quentin Richardson led the team with 34 points, with 7 three pointers. Nate Robinson contributed with 27 points, Wilson Chandler had 23, and David Lee had 22 points and 12 rebounds to hand the Wizards franchise their worst starting record in 40 years. I know he just got a contract extension, but can we fire Eddie Jordan. Please?

End of Challenge Notes

by Expat Chef

Funny thing, this Eat Local Challenge. It seems the more you try it, and the more others that try it, the less of a challenge it becomes.

Godiva chocolate stores

A few years ago, the idea of produce after October would have been futile. This year, I still have CSA pickups for another two weeks. The farmers market changed over to a “Holiday Mart” for November, but two of my farmers still show up and I can buy even more from them in addition to the CSA box.

Next year, our CSA farmer is hoping to have enough greenhouses in that the CSA will run the whole year. The demand has grown, it’s possible now to have year-round produce.

I’m shocked at the price people can charge for grassfed meat now that it is a “trend.” I still pay $3.00 a pound for a split side. My chicken and lamb guy brings the meat to my doorstep. Local eggs and milk are on the store shelves year round. In the darkest, coldest days of February, well, something local is on the table at every meal.

Even so, the last farmers market is still a tough morning for me. I have to say goodbye to friends I won’t see until April. I buy from each of them, too much produce, enough to put up for Thanksgiving and beyond. I buy a gallon of local honey from a beekeeper who emails me information about colony collapse disorder. I buy the most beautiful deep purple snap peas from the Thai farmers who have introduced me to many new vegetables this year. I buy heirloom pumpkins from the same farmer who grows alll heirloom tomatoes. I love his dedication to rare seeds, but his English is not very good, so I can’t really explain all this well. So I buy as many as I can carry.

From the “Asparagus Lady” I can get greens and huge bunches of spinach, twice as much in a bundle as anyone else sells. Carrots, mustard greens, collards, onions.

One farmer has a grandaughter that spoils my little girl. He’s got sorghum and chestnuts, potatoes, the last of the green beans. I give him a hopeful look, “Next week?” I watch the weather to see how much longer the season can last.

One by one, I say goodbye, but not completely. For a few weeks more, as long as they have produce to sell, I will come to buy. After the last for the season, I will use the pumpkins and sweet potatoes I have stored. The berries and green beans are put up in the freezer. The honey will last all winter. My Thanksgiving table will have local foods, including the turkey. I’ll use the last of my sage, rosemary and thyme before winter sets in.

Spring is not so far away. The only real challenge is waiting out the coldest, cruelest months. Even so, the bounty come spring will be all the better for the wait.

If you are going to participate in the Local Thanksgiving Challenge, or at least have as much local produce as possible on your menu, here’s a few recipes to get you thinking.

A Look Back At ABBA’s Most “Popular” Songs [Songs To Remember]

One of the pleasures of following Popular, in which Tom Ewing reviews every No. 1 U.K. pop hit in order, is tracing careers-in-miniature—”tiny novels,” as Greil Marcus said of Robert Christgau’s 1980s Consumer Guide book. That’s especially true of Ewing’s ABBA write-ups. He obviously loves the group: Popular’s newest entry is on “The Winner Takes It All,” which Ewing gives a perfect 10, making them the only act to whom he’s given that score for two separate releases—the previous 10 was for “Dancing Queen.” (The other 10s so far have gone to Nancy Sinatra, the Beatles—for the double-A-side “Eleanor Rigby”/”Yellow Submarine”—Desmond Dekker, T. Rex, Kate Bush, and Blondie.)

All of Ewing’s ABBA write-ups are worth reading on their own: they’re acts of love; you feel him giving himself over to the music more consistently with them than anyone else. I’ve taken the liberty of constructing a Last Word, to give you the idea, from each of the group’s eight No. 1s covered so far (their ninth and last, “Super Trouper,” will be along soon as well):

? “The second half of ‘Waterloo’ is the straightest Wizzard-lift, a really good rock and roll knees-up, but those thirty seconds, so stuffed with life and confidence and flamboyance - thats why I listen to this stuff in the first place. And then they disappeared, as soon as they’d come, and the Seventies shrugged, forgot Eurovision and got on with it. 9“Waterloo”]

? “Some people’s tolerance for ABBA is low because their music is so inescapable - I respect that point of view but if anything I feel I don’t hear enough ABBA, there are swathes of marvellous Andersson/Ulvaeus songs which get overlooked in favour of the usual five or six. But of those five or six, this is the one where I can most sympathise with the ABBA-weary: its lack of an emotional catch for me makes it more vulnerable to overplay. 7” [”Mamma Mia”]

? “‘Fernando’ is a good ABBA record, not a great one - but its enormous success gave them permission to stretch out further and faster in several directions. No ‘Fernando,’ no ‘The Visitors’ (no ‘I Have A Dream’ either, mind you). 7” [”Fernando”]

? “That piano line turned up again three years later, changed slightly in a pop world that seemed overturned, and it almost pushed Elvis Costello - a perennial sideline-lurker who’d long seen the tears as well as the grins in ABBA - to Number One himself. Even by then ‘Dancing Queen’ had become ABBA’s monolith, and by their 90s revival it was omnipresent. There’s an irony, maybe, that a song about the fleet intense beauty of youth, love and movement should have become such an ossified monument to ?perfect pop’ - but when I play it that really never seems to matter. 10 [”Dancing Queen”]

Sons of anarchy episode 12

? “It’s Frida’s star turn - though her first verse performance is a little wobbly - but Agnetha nearly steals it with her spectral whispers. The keyboards hit the grandeur they’re aiming for; the guitar solo doesn’t, but even in its forever-sabotaged state ‘Knowing Me Knowing You’ has cohesion and power. 8” [”Knowing Me Knowing You”]

? “An awkward record about awkward feelings: one of ABBA’s transitional singles, where they’re staking out territories they’d explore better later on. 7” [”The Name of the Game”]

? “The simplicity here’s a little deceptive, though - that wonderful a capella rhythm line is as bold a stroke as you’ll find on any of their records, and the flashing, bubbling keyboards show that Benny and Bjorn had been paying attention to Moroder’s advances. But that’s really all secondary to the song’s effervescence, with the girls’ hammy semi-spoken bits summing th
