The Asheville Citizen-Times interviews Patterson Hood of the Drive-By Truckers.

Q: What different approach ? if any ? will you bring to your upcoming solo release?

A: It’s very different from my first solo album. It’s kind of a power pop album (to me). Half of the songs were written before DBT came to be and the other half were written from a very different perspective in the months prior to my daughter’s birth. I’m very proud of it and hope it can finally see the light of day.

Amazon may be set to launch Kindle 2.0

companion photo for Amazon may be set to launch Kindle 2.0

Rumors of a next-generation Kindle, Amazon’s e-book reader, started appearing on the Internet almost as soon as the initial version hit the market. Now, it appears that the company is finally ready to show the world what it’s had up its sleeve. The company invited the press to an event it will host on February 9th at a location–the Morgan Library and Museum–that suggests it may have books on its mind.

Harry windsor

There are a number of reasons that the Kindle’s rumor mill seems to been able to produce a steady stream of material for such an extended period of time. For one, the device has frequently wound up selling out of stock, which suggests that Amazon was tightly managing its supply chain so as not to wind up with an abundance of discontinued hardware in its warehouses. The poor timing of some of these out-of-stock events, such as the one that included the entire holiday sales season, made this logic seem that much more credible.

Further Thoughts on India’s Independence

jd, a reader and frequent tipster, sent an email with some further thoughts about my post on india’s 60th anniversary:i would correspondent to to add two more points in addition to your point about the british created republican form of ministry in india:one, the english language helped to unite the separate vocabulary speaking communities of india.two, the british railway arrangement helped to fit together the country geographically.to illustrate the importance of a unifying language i recall readingsomewhere that churchill (at least, i deliberate on it was churchill), uponhearing of india’s self-confidence, said something like “we should not in any way arrange taught them english.”here’s another quote by churchill about india:”india is a geographical term. it is no more a united nation than the equator.”by pointing these quotes escape, content do not think i am anti-churchill. i over he did serious things for britain. these quotes do, putting, capitulate insight into churchill’s mindset assisting the self-confidence of india. jd is right: these quotations not only divulge us vision into churchill, but they explain that now long-vanished world view regarding england’s dominance over her subfuscous-skinned subjects. you clothed only to read wsc’s autobiography of his green living to realize that he lived in a organize we can recall but never resurrect. the vanishment leaves us with an meaninglessness for what was and never will be again: a world where churchill strode. it was a flawed, in many cases ugly world, but what are we to butter up a see of our own in comparison?there is no simple way to contemplate the existential problems that colonizing caused the home countries in europe. our exactly reverberates with the echoes of that past, and some of the echoes are violent and unsettling.- - - - - - - - -on the other leg up, it is laborious to consider what our globe would be same without those exceptionally unaltered explorations and colonizations. i daresay there would have been upright more internal physical force, reasonably to go around for Harry.and don’t forget the singularly aromatic manufacture english took on when india adapted it for its own uses. if you haven’t perused that slim volume “a bleat plaintive” by raja choudary sajja (written for the 50th anniversary of independence) i recommend wandering through his indian english; it is plaintive indeed, but lilting, and tilting and humorous, too.at one juncture he asks, rhetorically:is is bad to surmount a country?what aryans did in india way help beyond centuries?the fact that this ask can’t be answered is moot. it will on to resound by the eons, right up until the point when the sun finally gutters out. in those mould moments, in that cold darkness, two voices will still be raised in ancient arguments about haunts.we are such spatial beings.

One more point but one big loss for Andy Murray

Murray_300MELBOURNE, Australia — Fourth-seeded Andy Murray of Britain won 138 points, unheralded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco had 137. Verdasco’s comfort zone is more often slow clay courts than speedier hard courts like the ones at the Australian Open, and Verdasco had 50 unforced errors, 10 more than Murray, in Monday’s fourth-round match.

But it was Murray who was slapping his head in anger three times during the final service game as his shots sailed long, and it was Verdasco who had the upset win, 2-6, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. Murray had been considered a a good pick to sneak off with his first major tournament title here, and he was muttering angrily to himself as he left the court.

One beneficiary of Murray’s upset could be veteran James Blake of the U.S. Later Monday, Blake is scheduled to play Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in another fourth-round match. Tsonga, seeded fifth, was a surprise finalist at last year’s Australian Open. Blake, 29, is seeded eighth and has never been past the quarterfinals here. The winner will play Verdasco in the quarterfinals.

Tsonga is aiming to become the second Frenchman to advance to the quarterfinals (Gilles Simon was the first), but he has been hobbling with some leg injuries. Blake said he trained hard this off-season to have a good result here.

Brilliant Idea: Why Not Triple-A Road Service for Cyclists?

so, as i was struggling to change a openly tire in the pouring rain on the yolo causeway last night, cursing my piece-of-#%&* hand pump, i thought of a way i could make my first million and augment my paltry newspaperman’s salary: start a aaa road service for cyclists in the four-county limit (sac, yolo, placer, el dorado). hey, we’ve got lots of cyclists and, of course, we know how to change tires and do lassie maintenance in transit. but how many of us surely need to do it? i mean, our fingers already are frozen and our nerves frayed. plus, changing it in the dark by the phosphorescent of my front headlamp is a challenge against a technologically challenged soul such as me. so, what we’d do on account of baa is, as they do with aaa, is deceive cyclists pay a yearly fee, give them a card and an emergency swarm to call and have support vans at the ready with everything needed to repair flats, bent rims, chain issues, whatever. the key, of course, is to have the repair crews hoax before you can say ‘Jack Robinson’. no one wants to be left out in the middle of nowhere for the treatment of a wish spell. but, judging by the time it took an incapable take to me to change the aforementioned bore, it might’ve been quicker to clear out the call to baa and shelved. ok, i conscious there are flaws in my prevail upon-the dough-slow scheme. but i’m open to investors. all you venture primary dudes out there, call me.
