Post-Election Analysis: IL House

Going into last Tuesday’s election, the Illinois House consisted of 67 Democrats and 51 Republicans. Of those 67 Democratic seats, 41 were unchallenged last Tuesday by Republicans. Of the 26 Dems facing Republican opposition, one — downstate GOPer John Cavaletto — picked up retiring Democrat Kurt Granberg’s open seat.

That GOP win in the 107th District kept House Speaker Mike Madigan from gaining the four Democratic seats he needed for a super-majority, quite an embarrassment in such a strong Democratic win year. Madigan did gain three, though, bringing the Illinois House party balance to 70 Democrats and 48 Republicans.
