Why I Didn’t Like “The White Tiger”
after reading jabberwockâs positive review of aravind adigaâs the bloodless tiger some time ago, i was all set to pick it up. jabberwock, after all, is the quintessential cosmopolitan delhi-ite, so how can you go wrong? adiga also beat unserviceable both salman rushdie and the remarkable michelle de kretser to make it to the shortlist for the man booker loot. again, that should bode well, irrespective of whether adiga actually wins the prize. Supinie: Manual grad breaks out of his shell
Former Big Ten Conference Player of the Year Frank Williams could have had more than five points during the Night of Legends alumni basketball game Saturday at Assembly Hall, but he gladly took a back seat to the Flyin’ Illini who served as his team’s honorary captains.
“They told me I couldn’t shoot the ball,” said Williams, who broke into a smile while standing next to the banner with his name and jersey number that will hang above the Assembly Hall court. “They said I had to pass the ball. It was their night.”

The Manual High School graduate, 28, showed more emotion in the 90-minute reunion game than he did during his three-year Illini playing career that ended in 2002.
After the death of his mother in 2004 sent Williams into a downward spiral for two years and to the sidelines for almost as long, his rebirth included a return to basketball and rebuilt relationships.
Williams, who is planning to continue his pro career in Europe, said he finally might have grown up. He played last season in Italy, near Naples, and is seeking a deal acheter cialis in Greece or France this season. Williams hopes an agreement will come within the next two weeks.
Williams wants to play as long as he can, he said: “I think I’ve got a lot more years in me. Europe is a good situation for me right now.”
The 1998 Mr. Basketball in Illinois and a McDonald’s All-America as a senior at Manual, Williams earned the Big Ten’s top honor in 2001 after he led the Illini to a share of the conference championship. Then he scored 30 in a Sweet 16 victory over Kansas to get the Illini within one game of a Final Four berth.
As a junior, Williams sank a running one-hander in the closing seconds at Minnesota during the regular season’s final weekend to earn the Illini another share of the conference title. Twice he was a first-team all-Big Ten selection.
Taken with the No. 25 pick in the NBA draft in 2002, he spent two seasons with the New York Knicks, then played nine games with the Chicago Bulls in 2004-05.
Outside the lines, Williams was quiet and moody during his days at Illinois, when coaches battled to communicate and keep him motivated.
“He was an introvert all of his life,” said Illini assistant coach Wayne McClain, who coached Williams at Manual. “He now understands the value of people and friendships. He stayed at my house for three weeks this summer. There comes a time in your life where you have an epiphany and reach back to people you can trust.
“He seems like he’s enjoying people. He expresses his feelings now. He’s comfortable now saying, ‘How are you doing? I like you. I miss you.’ It was difficult for him to do that earlier. As you get older, your values change. Life is here today and gone tomorrow.”
Williams learned that in 2004, when his mother, Mary Ann Morris-Williams, died at 55 in her hometown of Chidester, Ark.
After her death, Williams fell out of basketball, gained weight and appeared headed for retirement. But he returned to competition after being drafted in the third round by the Sioux Falls SkyForce in the NBA’s developmental league before the 2006-07 season. After one year there, he left for Europe.
“Her passing took a lot out of me,” Williams said. “I know she wouldn’t want to see me stop playing. That’s why I’m back out here. And my son, Da-Monte, he stopped playing because I stopped playing. That really touched me. I realized I’ve just got to keep going. It was now or never. I think I’m doing good. I feel good.”
Now, Williams doesn’t want to quit on the game. His work ethic this summer impressed McClain. Williams also spent time with Illini assistant coach Jerrance Howard, who played high school ball at Central.
German tried over Nazi war crime
“Frank has so much left inside of him,” McClain said.
LOU-DO: Former Illinois basketball coach Lou Henson will turn 77 on Jan. 10, the same day his 1983-84 team will be honored at Assembly Hall during the Illini-Indiana game.
That would be a good time to hang a banner above the court to honor the 21-season Illini coach.
“He’s one-fifth of Illini basketball history,” Illinois coach Bruce Weber said. “Hopefully, somewhere down the road in the very near future, we’ll have his jacket and his name up there.”
HOOPS ON TV: Illinois opens the men’s basketball regular season at 8:30 p.m. Nov. 14 with a home game against Eastern Washington, it was announced Monday.
Illinois plays host to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 16 before a road game at 7 p.m. Nov. 20 (on FSN South) against Vanderbilt achat cialis. Home games against Jackson State (3 p.m. Nov. 23), Hawaii (7 p.m. Dec. 8), Chicago State (7 p.m. Dec. 10), Detroit (7 p.m. Dec. 20) and Eastern Michigan (1 p.m. Dec. 28) are set for the Big Ten Network.

You want lotsa Sarah Palin? Here comes lotsa Sarah Palin
ABC News, which gained three exclusive interviews with America’s hottest new news celebrity, Gov. Sarah Palin, is planning a prime-time special for Friday night, plus broadcasts of other segments on “Nightline,” “Good Morning America” and “World News.”
The first segment will appear on “World News” tonight.
Today and Friday news anchor Charles Gibson is conducting three separate interviews of the Republican Party’s first-ever female vice presidential nominee, in both Fairbanks and her hometown of Wasilla, Alaska.
The prime-time special will be “20/20″ on Friday night at 10.
With it will be a special biography of the 44-year-old mother of five by Kate Snow and a round-table discussion of the presidential race moderated by George Stephanopoulos.
Palin, a former city councilwoman and mayor and a self-described hockey mom, was seen as a comer for the last year or so in Republican Party circles, especially among GOP governors, who have produced two of the last three Republican presidents.

But Palin’s compelling personal story — including a love of hunting and fishing and the birth in April of her fifth child, who has Down syndrome — seems to have ignited widespread curiosity across the country, as well as enthusiasm among the party’s base, a post-convention bounce for the GOP ticket and a surge in fundraising.

Politically, Palin’s presence on the GOP ticket seems to be attracting large numbers of voters, especially women, according to recent polls.
And the stir over her is causing some concern among Democrats over the fading of Obamania. A Times team report Wednesday found that Palin’s presence and growing popularity have thrown the Obama-Biden campaign off stride, causing a more strident tone that some fear may be counterproductive, especially among women.
Palin’s acceptance speech at last week’s Republican National Convention was viewed by more than 37 million people. This and other websites report heavy traffic on almost anything Palin, such as this Sarah Palin fashion photo gallery.

Boston Tattoo Convention: Joe Boo

boston tattoo meeting september 12-14 boston center for the arts, 539 tremont street more info
The Boston Tattoo Convention is coming up this weekend! Bostonist is talking with tattoo artists to get a feel for what the weekend will be like. Today’s artist is Joe Boo of Lightwave Tattoo in Saugus, Mass. He had a lot to say, especially about folks who don’t know how to prepare for a tattoo (portfolio, portfolio, portfolio).

How did you get started tattooing? I was an arty punk kid growing up in Hanson, MA, and I went to a lot of punk/hard core shows in Boston all through high school. I could always draw, and found myself drawing a lot of tattoo designs for friends who were sneaking off to NH or RI. These kids would come back and the tattoos were either really well done (and this got me excited to see my art on them) or really poor, and when they came back bad all I could think about was how I could have done a better job if I had the gear. At this point the gears were turning, and I had been tattooed by a friend “Big Joe.” Once I got my first tattoo, I fell in love with it. I went to college, got a BFA in studio arts. By the time I got out, my good friend Jim Duval was working at Yankee Tattoo in Burlington, VT, and I got started there. I first started with a piercing apprenticeship with Kathy Nelson and then moved on to a tattoo apprenticeship with Bald Bill Henshaw, and he showed me the ropes about tattooing. Bald levitra Bill is an old school guy with a heart of gold, and is a rock solid tattoo artist, I am eternally grateful for all the time and effort he put into me. I would really be nothing without him. (Bald Bill and Jim will also be at the BTC this year under the Yankee Tattoo banner!!)
Brigitte gabriel
What is your favorite style of tattooing? I like big pieces, but really any tattoo artist will tell you that, I am more into the client myself. Great people get great tattoos. If I can be on the same wave length with a client, there will be awesome tattoos, I promise.
What’s your favorite tattoo that you have / have done? My favorite tattoo on me is my whole right side, tattooed by Shahn Anderson from Electric Dragonland over in Hopkins, MN. It’s a giant Blue Whale done in a Japanese style and it rocks! As far as tattoos I have done my friend Mark has the best work I have ever done. He is one of my favorite people so it makes sense really.
What’s the main thing people should know about tattoos, either getting them or in general? You can walk into a shop and see all sorts of cool stuff on the walls like real cool arty stuff, but that does not mean your tattoo artist can reproduce that stuff on you!! LOOK AT THE PORTFOLIOS!!!! There should be a photo book of the actual work being done there to give you an idea of the quality of work being executed!!! THIS IS SOOOO KEY PEOPLE!
More with Joe Boo after the jump. Images from Lightwave Tattoo.
What’s the most annoying question / the question you get the most about tattoos? If I have to hear “does it hurt?” I will go insane!!! If you ever wonder why those old tattoo artists are so damn cranky it’s cause they hear that every day! IT’S A TATTOO NOT A HANDSHAKE! Yes, they hurt.

what do you think of miami ink / l.a. ink and similar shows’ execute on the labour? i never really watch that stuff, as i work 10-hour days all week wish. to stumble upon home and watch kids doing what i do all age just seems silly, i know all in all directions the tattoo industry. pure predilection adjacent to this silly tv stuff is the well-known can get an idea of what a good tattoo looks adulate so when they go shopping around (looking at portfolios) they can compare and pick out an artist who will deliver a quality tattoo. it also takes a great deal b much of the mystery out of tattooing, so people who are typically apologetic of tattoo shops can determine we are not so scary. the bad thing is now we tease a whole new crop of young people who neediness to be tattoo artists, more than ever. some of these kids may in fact become grand tattoo artist, the other 97% will just appropriate for a gargantuan monkey wrench in a machine that is just starting to get the respect that it has worked so hard for. that and i have to hear how everyone is universal to go get a kat von d tattoo… sure you are buddy, me too.
What’s the first or best thing that someone who wants to be a tattoo artist can do? Look at their drawin …
