thestreet.com’s jim cramer says we have the right people in charge, so 2009 looks a lot brighter. send old hat the clowns. that’s how i am looking at 2008. the people who got us in this mess, whether it be chris cox — matrix-minute stifling of any accounting hopes … thanks, chris! — or the incredibly overrated and somehow revered hank paulson, and, most signal, president bush. not for a hip did that man do anything to get us out of this jam. it is telling that when people address of the outgoing administration on wall street, they never discourse upon of bush. it’s all paulson and some bernanke, a bush appointee. but in the biggest financial collapse statistically since the great depression, the president has played no role and starkly doesn’t understand most if not all that is happening around him. when we speak of the next administration and domestic policy, it is clear that we are going to lecture b be meaningful to about president obama. he won’t fob it postponed or veer from what’s occurrence. and recollect, this crisis got sheerest deep because the man at the top said the fundamentals were sound, and repeated that over and over and beyond, right up until the beginning of 2008, which is why things are as horrible as they are. and they are horrible. the president’s advisers, no doubt cowed by a clueless chief, on no occasion wanted to contrast, and bernanke reminds me of one of those academics around presidents kennedy and johnson, a brilliant man who has gotten us into the equivalent of a domestic vietnam. he’s irrevocably bombing the heck out of the economy, but it was too late, and now a new administration has to clean up his and paulson’s and bush’s mess for him.

The Perfect Social Tool

(Hint: It’s Not FriendFeed)

movies to download

robert scoble rightful admitted to spending 7 hours per day in friendfeed. it’s easy to see why. the more you look into that service, the more you find, and the deeper you fall down into the rabbit hut that is the social trap. it’s probably one of the most interesting and powerful social sties that we’ve seen show over the past year. yet it, like many other of today’s social web services, seems to be a somewhat incomplete vision of what a real social snare could be.

Sponsor

Let me explain.

I’ve just spent the past hour and a half finding new people to subscribe to on FriendFeed. As I clicked into their life streams, I also found a ton of articles which I spent time a long time reading. However, I hesitate to share my FriendFeed stats as openly as, say, Louis Gray does. Why? Because they wouldn’t be accurate.

the can of worms with friendfeed is that i tend to be a more passive consumer of the information that flows by on the use. who i “find interesting,” according to friendfeed, has less to do with who i actually discover to be provocative and more to do with who i remembered to “like” through a click of a button. in fact, the items that near “liked” are more often the items that didn’t be short of a long investment of my previously in order to absorb. in my stream of “likes,” you’re probably going to find a lot of funny photos, cool spider’s web apps, tweeted quips, and so on. however, the articles that i spent time reading, like this analysis of the agitation network or this expose of a rule staff member caught using a cut-rate diploma or even this review of burger king’s communal media efforts, are nowhere to be build in my “likes and discussions” tab. the reason? i didn’t skilled in i liked them until i clicked through and impute to the articles.

Yes, I know what you’re going to say: I could have hit the “back” button when I finished my reading and then clicked “like” to show that I enjoyed the articles. But the problem, you see, is that would require me to be a much more organized web citizen than I currently am. Instead, I had haphazardly opened these articles in tabs at some point during the day because I thought I might like to read them later. (Yes, sadly, try as I might, my “Read Later” system always reverts back to being open tabs in Firefox.) After opening these tabs, I had then proceeded to interact with FriendFeed as usual. Thanks to the constant flow of content and updates from FriendFeed’s fire hose, the original shares and sources of my discovery were lost to me.

Yet, if anything, I liked these items more than the ones I marked with a “like.”

It’s Not Just FriendFeed…

it’s not just friendfeed that has this issue - every initiative we fill up e deal with on the social snare requires some indisposed of user input - we have to “like,” “share,” “bookmark,” “update,” every little thing we do…and on occasion, it principled doesn’t prefer that natural. on the top side, there are tools breed the semantically-powered mucilage, for in the event, that quietly shares our behavior with friends. when we visit wikipedia, search for a unexplored book, cd, or movie, research local restaurants, discover remodelled wines, and more, glue makes a note of that ways which our friends can later review.

Unfortunately, there’s no “Glue” for the social web. There’s also no happy medium between what it does - quietly observe, record, and share all your actions - and the control you have with a single, manual “like” on FriendFeed. The ideal social tool would be something in the middle. Not entirely passive, but also not requiring you to click, click, click all the time to register your opinions. What this may be, I can’t even imagine, but it would have to be something that ties the social web all together. If I read an article in Google Reader, it could get liked on FriendFeed automatically. With one click, I could then Digg it, bookmark it, Twitter it, etc. Oh, and the starting point shouldn’t have to be

Paul Williams: A Christmastime Story of Greed, Debt, and Foreclosure

Times can get very tense… All around you, greed is taking place… You’re simply trying to pay the mortgage, make the tax payments, and hope to receive enough income from your investments and rental property.

Life in America in the 21st century?

I’m actually talking about the board game, Monopoly.

With Santa and his bag of toys coming soon, I thought I’d share a relevant story from Susan Waggoner’s book, Under The Tree: The Toys And Treats That Made Christmas Special. One of the many toy stories Susan shares, is the history of the game of Monopoly. During the Depression board games became very popular as a cheap way for family and friends to enjoy an evening’s fun. (I wonder if home-based games will receive a boost in sales during our challenged financial time?)

“Monopoly” was created in 1906 by Elizabeth Maggie, but was called The Landlord’s Game. The game was designed by Maggie to “demonstrate the ills caused by unequal distribution of wealth.” Instead of learning compassion for the poor, however, players reveled in amassing wealth and bankrupting fellow players. Maggie refused to modify the game to match aspect of the game greedy players enjoyed, and her version of the game was never mass manufactured.

unusual landlord game panel[click as far as something a larger view]

Over the years, local variations of the Landlord’s Game were created, but nothing on a broad scale. The game didn’t become popular until thirty years later, when Charles Darrow created a further variation, eliminating Maggie’s message and renaming it Monopoly. He sold it to Parker Brother’s (which at first rejected it) and it became the most successful board game of the century. (It is now manufactured by Hasbro).

According to the The Kansas City Historical Society, …the changes Darrow made to what is now Monopoly secreted away Maggie’s Georgist message. Although the rules were altered and the spaces were changed, some elements of Maggie’s anti-monopoly message can still be found. The community chest is mostly beneficial, railroads remain a prominent feature, class differences in the properties are still evident, and (most significantly) the game has only two outcomes for its players: poverty or wealth. The Monopoly game also saw some changes through the years. Metal was scarce during World War II. As a result, Monopoly games were made with wooden game pieces instead of metal ones.

One more thing…

I’ve enjoyed sharing marketing thoughts with you over the year. I look forward to more discussion in 2009. I wish you and your family health and happiness in the New Year!

Should the New York Times Whistleblower Be Prosecuted?

Newsweekaspx

The news that a former justice department prosecutor was the original source for the NY Times 2005 story on the NSA’s warrantless wiretapping has led to some divided opinions about whether or not Thomas Tamm should be prosecuted for revealing classified information.

Some bloggers think Tamm is a patriot and are encouraging readers to contribute to his defense fund. A blogger at Empty Wheel writes:

irrespective of his precise insulting motivations, tom tamm has done the constitution, the fourth amendment, the predominate of law and all of us a favor by exposing the arrange lawlessness of the elected leaders of this native land. if you ride out tally, send him a few bucks to lighten the lade he has taken on.

I don’t know about you, but if the wingnuts can pony up hundreds of thousands for the traitor Scooter Libby, I am sure as heck going to ante up a little to thank Tom Tamm for doing the right thing.

Others feel Tamm should be punished for breaking the law and violating an oath he took to preserve classified information. A commenter on the Volokh Conspiracy blog writes:

i have no compatibility for this guy. if you are entrusted with classified dirt, particularly in a national confidence setting, it is not up to you to settle on that you disagree with the government and want to spill your guts to a newspaper. and i don’t give a damn what justification you contrive you have.

There are plenty of other ways to blow the whistle.

Some say whistleblowers can have legitimate reasons for revealing information about probable illegal activity by government officials but find fault with Tamm’s motives because he admitted to being driven not just by legal issues but by political ones as well — he conceded to Newsweek that he was angry with the Bush administration for zealously pushing prosecutors to seek the death penalty in criminal cases.

Others feel Tamm should be prosecuted because he took his concerns to the media rather than taking them to a congressional leader, the Justice Department inspector general or to one of the judges in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. Although Tamm told Newsweek he did approach a congressional staffer that he knew on the Senate Judicial Committee, the staffer rebuffed him because she was wary of hearing about a classified project and urged him to drop the topic. Colleagues in his Justice Department office also declined to discuss the matter with him.

Washington Monthly blogger Hilary Bok says although whistleblowers should not as a matter of course “freelance” out classified information, there are exceptions when the system put in place to monitor wrongdoing has itself been subverted.

Jose luis macias

it is generally better for all concerned if whistle-blowers operate within the system, and it is dangerous when people freelance. but there’s undivided big exception to this rule: when the system has itself been corrupted. when you’re operating within a combination in which whistle-blowers’ concerns are not addressed — where the likelihood that any complaint you make within the system will be addressed is near zero, while the likelihood that you will be targeted for reprisals is peak — then no sane person who is motivated by a desideratum to have his or her concern addressed require work within that system.

Tell us what you think.
