New Phoenix Emergency Center Pioneers Sustainable, Patient-Optimized Architecture
Boston, September 9, 2008 - A new emergency and Level 1 trauma center at the John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital in Phoenix is a pioneering example of how architecture can help speed patient care, reduce stress and provide a healthy, sustainable living environment.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has been the leading professional membership association for licensed architects, emerging professionals, and allied partners since 1857.

the emergency center was designed using archicad by orcutt-winslow architects to deliver very high standards of tolerant comfort and construction operation. the long waits proletarian in most pinch departments are not only minimized by the center’s triage system, but also by fashionable processes made possible by the center’s architectural design. the center features 37 individual treatment rooms and four trauma bays designed to expedite treatment, protect patient privacy and speed healing.
Even the decor of the 36,000 square foot facility is designed for quality care. Clinical research has shown that nature has a cialis healing effect on patients. Consequently, Orcutt-Winslow made extensive use of day lighting to enhance the patient experience and reduce energy consumption. Natural colors and natural elements incorporated into everything from wall glass to photography create a peaceful, calming atmosphere throughout the new center. And a unique a “healing garden” provides a tranquil place for patients, family and friends who are waiting for news about a loved one receiving care.

The project was designed, presented and documented using ArchiCAD. To this end, Orcutt-Winslow collaborated with a broad team of hospital personnel, emergency and security experts to design an optimized emergency center. Consequently, the BIM model was critical for visualizing and debating various design ideas and facilitating rapid changes throughout the long process. Using ArchiCAD also ensured coordination and accuracy of the documents, and allowed the in-house design team, consulting engineers, and material suppliers to collaborate through the document design process.
Due to the integration of design and documentation that is possible through a BIM model, the resulting construction documents were coordinated more efficiently. Changes made to one aspect of the building model were automatically updated across all documents. This tight integration meant there were fewer coordination issues to resolve during the construction phase, saving time and money. The BIM model also helped the team to discover special detailing opportunities that they might otherwise overlook when preparing their contract documents.
Having a BIM model at their fingertips allowed for more timely feedback when reviewing the project with all the stakeholders. “We met weekly for a year, and collaborated with one another with one goal in mind: to design a patient- and family-focused Emergency and Trauma Center,” said Jeff Tschetter, RN and clinical director of Emergency Services at the hospital. “We included all of the end-users -nurses and physicians, unit secretaries, technicians, trauma surgeons and anesthesiologists, paramedics and helicopter pilots, even the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI - in the design and development process. We allowed everyone to build something they will use day in, day out.”
The center, which is one of only six Level 1 trauma centers in Arizona, helped the hospital earn a Magnet Designation award by the American Nurses Association, which recognizes health care facilities that deliver quality patient care, nursing excellence, and innovations in professional nursing practice.
