“Whale Wars” (animal Planet, 9 p.m.) may be the strangest new series for the critter-loving network yet. It follows the renegade eco-activists on the high seas who take it upon themselves to stop Japanese whaling boats.
Kicked out of Greenpeace levaquin online, these warriors, called eco-terrorists by some, are heroes at a network where animals are king. It’s a subversive twist on “Deadliest Catch,” in which their targets often shoot back.
Two new talk show hosts enliven Fridays. “Henry Rollins: Uncut” (IFC, 10:30 p.m.), the latest incarnation of the TV career for the rocker turned standup performaer, has him doing his unique stand up along with documentary interviews in goodwillvisits to global trouble spots, beginning with New Orlens, still releeling from Katrina. He’ll follw in subsequent weeks with stops in South Africa and Northern Ireland.
“Elvis Mitchell: Under the Influence” (TCM, 8 and 10:30 p.m.) continues the former movie critic’s thoughtful discussion with stars, illustrated with scenes (and whold screenings) of films they love. Friday’s guest, Edward Norton, is better than you may assume. And he brings with him screenings of “Annie buy movie online Hall” (8:30 p.m.), “A Streetcar Named Desire” (11 p.m.) and “La Jetee” (1:15 a.m.).
Later, a couple of early Jack Nicholson B-movies about drugs provide a late late double play, “The Trip” (TCM, 2 a.m.) and “Psych-Out” (TCM,3:30 p.m.). Susan Strasberg also stars in both.
Taylor Swift was born two years after Def Leppard released its hit fourth album. But apparently the 18 year old country star feels a kinship with the 80s rockers. So they joined together on a Nashville stage to trade some songs on “CMT Crossroads” (CMT, 9 p.m.) in which they join forces on songs that include their “Photograph,” “Hysteria” and “Born Some Sugar On Me” and her “Picture to Burn” and “Love Story.”
The election is what they’re taling about on the public affairs shows, with Kevin Phillips on “Bill Moyers Journal” (PBS, 9 p.m.) and Charles Ogletree, Obama’s advisor at Harvard on “NOW” (PBS, 8:30 p.m.).
Howie Mandel, Paul Begala, Cory Booker and Joe Queenan are part of the discussion on “Real Time with Bill Maher” (HBO, 11 p.m.).
New to Fridays, switching places with “Life” is “Lipstick Jungle” (NBC, 10 p.m.). Fridays are pretty unforgiving for shows; the latest cancellation was “The Ex-List,” replaced by a rerun of “NCIS” (CBS, 9 p.m.).
But if you’re looking for a new show to watch instead, “The Starting Wife” (USA, 10 p.m.) is a pretty good place to start.
“Law & Order Criminal Intent” (USA, 9 p.m.) returns for a new season, with Janel Moloney guest starring in the episode. But Jeff Goldblum’s character doesn’t start until at least next week.
Mercenaries go after the modern day pirates off the coast of Liberia in the premiere of “Shadow Force” (History, 10 p.m.).
