Don’t get me wrong: I absolutely love The Northern Clemency (our pick as the top book of 2008), but Philip Hensher’s stunning novel is a poor choice when trying to calm an irate/hyper toddler. (Unless, of course, you’ve passed the child to your better half with the hopes of escaping into a brilliant storyline) So as the father of a not-surprisingly-loud 15 month old, I feel obligated to give some Best of 2008 love to DK’s Baby Touch and Feel series.
Countless meltdowns were thwarted and quiet venues were once again accessible to our family thanks to the vibrant colors, interactive pages, and durable Touch and Feel construction. A wide range of textures brings each book to life, as curious readers can pet kittens, feel tractor tires, and brush up against a bale of hay without needing a significant amount of Purell. At the risk of sounding like an infomercial shill (What’s that? Too late?), I consider this series a must for rookie parents seeking a tantrum-free public outing. Personally, I shudder to think what 2008 would have been like if we hadn’t kept at least one of these books close at hand.
I’m sure my son will grow to appreciate his Dad’s favorite reads, but until then, he remains confused that we left trucks, farm animals, and puppies off our Top 100. And considering how happy these titles have made him, I’m not sure I disagree.
