Inauguration dc January 18, 2009

My name is Kelli Saam, and I’m a news addict. I admit it. I love watching TV news. I especially love watching really big news stories. I could barely pull myself away from the coverage of the jet crash landing in the Hudson River. Election Night, same thing. When I visit another city I always like to check out the news to see how they produce their news.
So this week when Barack Obama is sworn into office, I know where I’ll be. I’ll be perched in front of my TV, for many, many hours. This is a moment we’ll all remember where we were when it happened. This is history, the first black president. How appropriate it will happen one day after MLK Day. There are so many pieces to this story, so many people to talk to, and so many stories to tell. It’s fascinating.
It makes me understand why my mother to this day, has a portrait of John and Bobby Kennedy hanging in her home. Back when JFK was campaigning for president, she saw him at a campaign rally in Illinois. It changed her, made her care about politics. For her he represented new hope (and the first Catholic president.) Hence, JFK and RFK were always there, their portrait hanging in the hallway when I grew up. She’s not even a Democrat, she votes for “the person,” but that experience was so significant, she would talk about it for years to come. As a child, before I knew who these men were, I assumed they were family members whose painting was posted on the hallway wall.
Locally, there are several people who have the amazing opportunity to attend the inauguration, and we’ve told some of their stories on our news. I was especially touched by the story of 87-year-old Isaac Lowe, of Redding. She’s dedicated six decades of her life to the civil rights movement. Now she’s lived to see Barack Obama elected president. It’s probably not easy for her to travel, but she’s setting off on her cross-country journey to see history first-hand in Washington, D.C. She calls it “the top of the line for me,” and adds “this is what I fought for, the right of a person to be what they want to be.”

Butte County Democrat Bob Mulholland will be at the inauguration too with his wife, Butte County Supervisor Jane Dolan. He remembers visiting the South as a teenager and seeing the signs for “Whites Only” on the bathrooms.
Where will you be on Tuesday? Do you have any special plans for inauguration day? What does Barack Obama’s election mean to you? I would love to hear your story. No matter what your political affiliation, this is a day we can all pull together and be proud of how far our country has come.
