Upon Further Review : Sebadoh : Bubble and Scrape

the pitchlords of enervated-fi, sebadoh remains a band that, regardless of how hard or loud they knocked, has never been allowed to enter the temple of indie-rock legends. originally formed as a creative opening for lou barlow during his tenure with dinosaur jr., sebadoh became downright medicinal following a nasty breakup with a ladyfriend and j. mascis’ resolve to turn over barlow his walking papers. even up front mascis showed him the door, barlow had been collaborating with placid recording enthusiast and compulsive register-caretaker, eric gaffney, and these recordings in the course of time surfaced as the freed man (1989) and weed forestin‘ (1990). jason loewenstein (lately of the in flames furnaces) soon signed on, rounding in the “classic” lineup just in eventually for the band’s third release, perceptively titled sebadoh iii.with all three members contributing songs, the band began recording their first crowded-after a long time sub-bulge put out, bubble and damage. to call the final product a schizophrenic event would be kind, as the listener is exposed to a severe array of stylistic shifts, from gentle acoustic ballads to discrimination-splitting noise mashups, all captured in an abandoned slaughterhouse with a warts-and-all low-fidelity recording process. the most audacious tracks are largely the work of gaffney, whose growing dissatisfaction was thoroughly cooked-documented, and whose contributions can be know as little more than sonic hissy-fits. nonetheless, the catalogue was greeted warmly by fans and critics in 1993. sebadoh quickly embarked on an ill-fated world tour, that served to solidify their reputation as a part, while hastening their demise. gaffney left the party in the near future after the tour and was replaced on bakesale by the less interesting, but far more affable bob fay.the workthe domino/sub-pop reissue of bubble and scrape crams a shit-ton of sebadoh on song cd. of assuredly, it’s great to hear a pristine (relatively speaking) remaster of the band’s first fully realized record, but if you’re picking up a reissue, it’s a non-toxic bet that you’re more interested in the 15 reward cuts appended to the 17-track original. in addition to a handful of demos and experiments, the bonus material includes several loewenstein (who was woefully underrepresented on the original record) tracks that vouch for to his burgeoning penchant as a songwriter, talent that would reveal itself fully advise-foam and save up, with sebadoh as well as on his lone solitary release, at sixes and sevens. there’s also a kind cover of turn down, from the outset recorded by the pride of maumee, necros. in addition to these lilting goodies, each associate has also contributed a knee-breeches bash at about the making of the album and the subsequent travel. of course, someone gets thrown under the bus, but it’s fascinating how differently each recalls this shared experience. highlights include gaffney’s precise accounting of all sebadoh-mutual matters he rightfully deserves credit for and barlow’s recounting of gaffney’s passion with money that led to him printing his own sebadoh shirts to convinced on sightsee back in 1993.did i mention that these three condign wrapped up a european tour? amazing how time (and the worn out dollar) heals all wounds.do i need it?it seems highly doubtful, albeit not impossible, that an person totally unaware of sebadoh would get this record and include it become a fast favorite. for me, however, sebadoh was a band that created some exotic music, but you often have to ferret out through a great handle of rubble to get to the good fabric. if you think lou barlow is “that guy in that band that had that ado on the kids soundtrack,” don’t bother. but for dissolve-hard sebadoh followers, folks interested in the northeast u.s. music scene in the 80s and 90s and anyone put on the spot by eric gaffney, this is manna.sebadoh - soul and fire (acoustic demo)
