Israel Vows to Sweep Hamas from Power - James Hider, The Times

Epic war 2 achievements

Analysis: Gaza: Flashpoint of Violence - Claude Salhani, United Press International

the latest flare-up of violence in gaza needs to put in mind of president-elect barack obama of the urgency in verdict a undying settlement to the conflict in the middle east. so long as the israeli-palestinian dispute remains unresolved, the risk of a greater conflagration remains a reality. we are now entering a sheer dangerous period — the transition from president george w. bush to president obama. it may be seen as the moment of opening by israel to take decisive action against the palestinian islamic resistance crusade, otherwise known as hamas. after a day of brutal aerial bombardment by israel on gaza during which more than 250 palestinians were killed — including women and children — the only comment from the bush white house was to caution israel to “avoid killing civilians.” this message compel most likely be perceived by israel as a tacit unripe light from washington to proceed with their “cleanup” operations in the gaza strip.

Wyoming, Western Ranchers Form Wind Energy Associations

GEwindturbine.jpg

there’s a growing movement gone from west as ranchers and property owners in high, steady afraid areas of wyoming and neighboring western states turn to wind vitality associations as a means of better understanding and coming to terms with the growing few of empty talk energy conjure up developers and agents interested in leasing rights to their upon.

Cattle ranchers in areas such as Wyoming’s Laramie Valley are having a tough time of it: though they’ve come down sharply of late, the cost of diesel and gasoline, as well as fertilizers, hay and other inputs, have shot up sharply over a period of years. This year’s calf prices, meanwhile, are the lowest since 2002 putting pressure on the many smaller, family run cow/calf operations spread across the Mountain West.

While demand for their calves and beef may be weak and margins tightening, ranchers in places like Laramie Valley are finding that they have another increasingly valuable natural resource: wind. In order to come to grips with the deals being put before them and cut better ones, typically fiercely independent ranchers and other property owners are forming wind energy associations, according to a report run by NPR’s “All Things Considered.”

Winds Out West

laramievalley.jpg

wind project developers and light agents suffer with become an increasingly common imperceptible in high, solidly keep company wind areas across the mountain west, typically negotiating with landowners one by unified in order to amass the large plots necessary to build sizeable-scale, grid-connected about to happen farms.

A typically cautious, independent lot, ranchers have found themselves on the short side when it comes to market information and just what such rights could, or should, be worth. That’s leading them to form wind energy associations, a collective bargaining and information sharing alternative that also affords project developers a more streamlined and efficient means of negotiating the rights they need, NPR’s Addie Goss reports for “All Things Considered”.

Seeing more and more wind project development agents canvassing such areas, longtime residents with deep roots in such places realized that ranchers were at a disadvantage when it came to understanding and negotiating the leasing rights deals they were being offered, and that, on the other side of the bargaining table, wind project developers would stand to benefit if they could cut deals for large blocks of acreage by dealing with one group.

In Wyoming, Grant Stumbough, who works for a state arm of the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, two years ago began working with ranchers and property owners to form wind energy associations, cooperative affiliations that are now spreading to states across the West.

Nefarious Doings in Allowing Change.gov? We Think Not…

Whatever you think of the eight long years of the Bush Administration, it has - thus far - seemed a model of cooperation in the transition to its successor. That gracious and practical spirit extends to the succession of power on the web - to the obvious chagrin of one popular right-wing blogger.

Michelle Malkin “exposes” the machinations behind President-elect Obama’s use of a dot-gov domain for his Change.gov transition site, complete with FOIA request and gotcha document scans. Except to these eyes, what Malkin has exposed is simple patriotic goodwill on the part of the Bush team has it hands over the virtual keys of government to the Obama geeks.

Malkin’s spin is that a temporary hold-up of the Change.gov address was in keeping with the General Services Administration rules governing government domains and that some unnamed subterfuge may have been at work in overruling the initial denial of the Change.gov address. She quotes the government documents:

Bob woodruff

The day after the election, on Nov. 5, GSA Chief Information Officer Casey Coleman overruled Alterman after apparently receiving a waiver from Chris Lu, Executive Director of Obama’s Transition Project. As reader Lance discovered through his FOIA request, Ms. Coleman did not elaborate on the granting of this waiver except to say that she had “determined that it is in the best interest of the Federal Government to register the subject domain name.”

As another GSA official who facilitated the convenient change in policy regarding change.gov exulted to the Obama campaign after the domain was granted, “Rock and roll!”

Malkin snark: “The strict rules do not apply when you invoke CHANGE.” Well, perhaps not. But it also seems patently clear that both the Bush Administration and the large army of full-time civil servants who are not political appointees has engaged fully with the incoming Obama team, even going so far as to publish the extraordinary Putting Citizens First: Transforming Online Government.

Week in Review: Too-Much-Sushi Edition

Okay, we’ll admit it. We’ve played the “not feeling well, must’ve had some bad sushi last night” card when calling in sick once or twice in the past year our lifetimes. But being the (basically) good worker bees that we are, we never failed to show up for work the next day. That wasn’t the case this week with the notorious Lothario Jeremy Piven, who not only used that “sushi defense” with Speed-the-Plow producers on two consecutive days early in the week, but also to suspiciously quit the production two months shy of its scheduled close. But as hard as that excuse was to believe, apparently Dad of the Year candidate Will Smith’s poorly reviewed film Seven Pounds stretches the boundaries of plausibility even further. But nowhere near as far as those new Batman 3 casting rumors.

What else happened this week? Well, Tom Cruise showed up in New York, sat on Letterman’s couch and admitted he “always wanted to kill Hitler” when he was a kid. We learned Governor Paterson is going to start taxing our entertainment purchases more heavily, which we hope doesn’t extend to CSI video games, Knight Rider GPS systems or Flux Capacitors. The Wrestler finally hit theaters, prompting us to speak with Darren Aronofsky and Mick Foley but, more important, to document the toll that the years have had on Mickey Rourke’s face. We also discussed who would accept a Golden Globe on Heath Ledger’s behalf, asked whether Chuck Lorre was the smartest person on television, and debated the merits of Kanye West’s performance on SNL. And then, at long last, we called it a week.

Until Monday!

cookies and the like

Img_9232

I have been baking. I made a chocolate gingerbread and it was heaven, but was slightly overcooked by me. The recipe order prednisone was in our local paper in FOODay, but the link won’t work, sorry. Today I made these linzer style cookies with raspberry jam. This is a standard sugar cookie type dough with an egg yolk and the addition of allspice and cinnamon. It’s one of those doughs you can use for like, 101 types of cookies. I have a huge lump of it in the fridge and am making different types of cookies with it in between unpacking boxes.

Img_9229

And here’s a little group in martha’s scalloped cookie boxes that order Levaquin are so stinkin’ cute. You can see the same boxes here as well, looking even dandier. Just two kinds are in this box?some Russian teacakes (XL-style) and some milk chocolate marshmallow fudge. Simple and sweet. I actually have yet to give any away. The weather has been dicey causing holiday visits to be spotty. The post office has been hard to get to as well. So, they are being eaten in-house. The dark chocolate salted walnut fudge is totally gone. Oh, well.

6.5-magnitude quake strikes off Japan

I need to point out the holiday goodness over here, which caused much envy and made me both super inspired and wishing for a clone.
