Your Grammy Picks: Please Share Them [Somethin 4 The Weekend]

in case you weren’t aware, the grammy awards—the relate industry’s annual salute to itself, which this year will have fewer awards and more performances crammed into its 210ish-micro running time than ever—are taking consider this sunday, and oh boy are we going to be here to fare-blog it all starting at 7:30 p.m. et that night. (do come by!) but with all the talk of the awards, and who’s playing, and who’s giving faulty awards, and who’s sponsored by pepsi, the flat issue of who force accommodate home the evening’s small gramophone statuettes has been somewhat passed over. after the jump, a scattering of my picks for “can” and “should” in the colossal categories (at least, the ones that i think are going to be squeezed into the medley-heavy telecast)—tolerate free to review the nominees list, then clanging in and portray me why i’m unequivocally wrong (or 100% spot-on). then settle back here sunday continually so we can all razz each others’ prediction skills!
Song Of The Year Likely Winner: Coldplay, “Viva La Vida.” But Wouldn’t It Be Great If It Went To: Joe Satriani. Ha ha, just kidding! I mean Estelle, “American Boy.”
Motorcycle show chicago
Record Of The Year Likely Winner: Leona Lewis, “Bleeding Love.” But Wouldn’t It Be Great If It Went To: M.I.A., “Paper Planes.” And then she’d give birth!
Album Of The Year Likely Winner: Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Raising Sand. But Wouldn’t It Be Great If It Went To: Ne-Yo, Year Of The Gentleman. Like you didn’t think I was going to rep for my favorite album of last year? (You can pretty much figure that I’ll want Ne-Yo to win any category he’s in—like Best Pop Performance, Male, which is probably going to be snagged by Kid Rock, ugh.) Lil Wayne would be a perfectly acceptable substitute here.
Best New Artist Likely Winner: Adele. But Wouldn’t It Be Great If It Went To: Jazmine Sullivan, whose tightly wound R & B gets better with each listen.
Best Metal Performance Likely Winner: Metallica. Duh. But Wouldn’t It Be Great If It Went To: Dragonforce. A nation of Guitar Hero players would raise their plastic axes.
Best Rock Song Likely Winner: Kings Of Leon, “Sex On Fire.” But Wouldn’t It Be Great If It Went To: Bruce Springsteen, “Girls In Their Summer Clothes.” Stephin Merritt would have to be thanked, right?
Looking over a lot of the other categories, I see many a probably televised battle in which no one wins (Exhibit A: Best Pop Performance, Female, which pits Duffy against Katy Perry against the most annoying Pink song ever against a Sara Bareilles track that’s about 500% more irritating than the rest of her catalog against the schmaltziest song on the actually kind of lovely Adele record against Leona Lewis). So I’ll just leave it there and throw the rest open to you.

Cevicos: A journey of faith, hope and love

Less than 48 hours on the ground coming off another powerful week of mission work in Cevicos, Dominican Republic, I am this year, as in years past, exhausted physically and mentally but as alive as possible in my faith in God.
As I departed for Cevicos, as part of the Holy Family Parish Mission, with 12 other missionaries on the morning of Saturday, Jan. 10, I did so with a broken and empty heart. I have never felt so anxious, unsure and scared at what I would face on the other end of our American Airlines flight. Solanyi, a beautiful and driven young lady I had been mentoring for the past six years and who was my personal face of Cevicos, was killed in a car accident on Oct. 9. I was going back to Cevicos in large part to mourn her loss with her family and friends, and also to try to restore my faith in all that is good.
There is a more powerful call that we all are answering, that is to open our hearts to serving God’s poor. Our missionary team was prepared to do just that as we aimed to deliver medical and dental care to as many people as we could during our time in Cevicos.
Clinically, we were able to deliver medical and dental care to close to 500 people spread over four separate clinics that we held. We carried with us 15 suitcases or duffle bags of medical supplies, donated by caring partners in our missionary work or purchased by those of us making this journey. Getting what we need, when and where we need it, is no small feat. Somehow, it all works out in the end.
Our trip this year also marked the commencement of the 10th anniversary of our mission in Cevicos. A tree has grown from the seed planted by Deacon Bill Kane back in 1999. What is going on with our fellow Cevicans is powerful beyond words and as the week unfolded we would learn just how we are impacting the lives of those we touch.
meeting medical needs
Our first clinic was held in our clinic building in Cevicos. With the help of five wonderful teenagers from the community and of course, the sisters of Las Hermanas Dominicas de Fatima, we delivered a very orderly day of medical and dental services to over 150 people. The health issues ranged from high blood pressure, high blood sugar, infections of various parts of the body to parasites caused by the non-potable water these people are forced to consume. We carry meds to treat just about all of these issues. Dental care was focused on teeth that were rotted beyond repair due to lack of basic dental maintenance and diet. Teeth were extracted with professional care and people left with minimal discomfort.
Our second and third clinics were held in small campos, villages, on the outskirts of Cevicos. These villages are home to people who are poorer than poor and due to location, have little to no access to any medical care or supplies. They greet us with arms opened wide and smiles that would brighten any dark day.
As we welcomed people early in the day, we waved goodbye to many of them well into the afternoon as it just takes that long to process people through a clinic given the throngs awaiting us. The patience and grace these people exhibit waiting to see “el doctor or el dentista” is an example all of us impatient types could learn from.
Our final clinic was a half-day clinic on our last day in Cevicos, intended to see specific people who had requested time with the doctor or dentist. With few exceptions, the clinical side of the mission was abundantly successful.
sharing spirituality
What moved me on this trip was not the clinical aspect of what we do; it was the faith-based side of our journey. Those of us who are blessed to have been part of a trip to Cevicos find ourselves asking a very basic question, “are we making a difference, are we helping these beautiful people?”
For me, that question was emphatically and passionately answered on this trip, honestly, not during any medical clinic, but by spending time with the people. We had the opportunity to do community faith sharing with some families in a small building, dimly lit and filled only with plastic chairs, not nearly enough to allow all who attended to sit. One by one, members of this very poor community gave testimony to how God serves as the center of their lives and that it is their faith in God which allows them to survive the rigors of life, steeped in profound poverty.
What they all went on to say is that our mission has given them the gift of hope. They can feel the love pour out of us when we are with them and that gives them hope. They have hope and faith that Go …

french meringues4 egg whites (room temperature)2 1/4 c confectioners sugardirections:pre-kindle oven to 200 degrees. line baking sheet with silpat or parchment paper. tan the egg whites until foamy. slowly add all the sugar in small bits. mix in larder-facilitate on medium speed for 30-40 minutes until satiny and looks like whipped cream.

locate in pastry bag and pipe into desired go (i used a on the loose star shaped tip with my bag)place in oven and put a wooden spoon in the oven door to respect it slightly propped open (this will dodge getting cracks in the meringues)bake to 3 hours. make sure they are hook waterless before pulling them out of the oven.allow to cool completely & market in an air-tight container. gold-mine just came elsewhere of the oven. i regard as i’ll greatest them with mixed berries. oui oui.xoxo

arbor day

it looks like a bright pile of leaves from a sugar maple, doesn’t it? but it’s not?it’s the faroese sibling to the autumn arbor stole. i’m once again knitting in whisper merino lace from the woolen rabbit and i couldn’t be happier?the yarn is just lovely to work with.
the phrase autumn mantle keeps coming to mind when i think about this project. the sweeping shape of the faroese shawl reminds me of tree canopy, i guess, so i’m working with that image in mind for the final silhouette?the hem will look like a fringe of big, fat, overlapping leaves that leads upward through a tangle of more open lace to the shoulders.
Nbc 40 atlantic city

i’m working this shawl completely different than the previous faroese shawls i designed. while i like working down from shoulder to hem, increasing steadily as i go, i wasn’t going to have the beautiful edge we all liked so much in the autum arbor stole. it would still have been scalloped but not the same way.
i’m designing this one on the needles to a certain extent, which has not been my usual way of going about it. and the shaping is all different, too. the lack of planning has potential to make me nervous, but so far, the design feels like it’s falling into place as long as i stay one step ahead of myself. wish me luck.
starting at the hem means that the rows are very long in the beginning, but funny enough, they are moving along more quickly than i expected?i love this stitch pattern cialis kaufen and the length of each row has a zen quality about it which i’m enjoying (no need to check the chart very often, ha). still, i’m already 40 rows in? almost at the next transition, where i need to decrease down and continue with a smaller version of the same motif. the nice part is that it will get smaller as i go.

i love the new england red colorway?just what i need in february. when i look outside everything is thickly coated in white; we can’t even see the pavement or the sidewalks. the orange really brings a bit of sunshine into the place.
now, before i talk about any other knitting, i want to share some good news from deb kessler at fearless fibers, who is now taking signups for her whisper of spring lace club.
this is one of deb’s wonderful “short” clubs?three shipments of three lovely yarns and patterns for lace projects. what’s terribly exciting about this one is that deb is re-launching her incredibly lovely cashmere laceweight yarn for one of the club installments. you might remember that i’ve knit with this yarn a couple of times, and that my friend susie knit her casino shawl from it.
it was unavailable in deb’s shop for a while but she’s decided to start dyeing it again and the first recipients will be club members.

i’ll be doing a scarf design to go with it in this beautiful lavendar/gray colorway for the may installment. now if that doesn’t look like a gentle may breeze, i dunno what does?i can practically feel the fresh air washing over me.
in other knitting news, i also have quick little secret project on the needles that i’ll be able to reveal in a week or so which is providing a break from those long shawl rows once in a while (not that i need one very often).
what i need is to get a sock on the needles . . . can you believe i don’t have one to work on right now? i certainly have plenty of yarn to start one, hehe. the trouble is deciding which.
i also have another little neckwarmer i’ve been pondering?i did some swatches a couple of months back that i didn’t show you, one of which was this pattern

it reminds me of ice crystals and frost flowers that form on the windowpaness, so i thought it would be a great little quick-and-pretty project for february (and sure enough, it has been all-ice, all the time around here for the last week).
anyhow, i of course fell in love
