A road safety group is urging motorists to be careful trying out satellite navigation systems they receive for Christmas.

The Local Authority Road Safety Officers’ Association, fears drivers in Leicestershire, who have never used sat navs, could be distracted while getting used to the new technology.

Simon Ettinghausen, a spokesperson for the association, said: “Sat navs are a great help for drivers when used properly and we see them as an integral part of motoring.

“As one of the most popular gifts this Christmas we feel that some drivers who are not used to using sat navs may use them in a way that could place themselves or other road users in danger.”
