ORLANDO, Fla.,Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ — You might want to keep your eye out for some HAVOC the next time you visit your Chevy dealership. The team at Innovative Vehicle Solutions (IVS) in metro Detroit is launching its HAVOC Camaro Aero Kit for the fifth generation Camaro at the 2010 National Automotive Dealers Association (NADA) Convention this week.

The HAVOC Aero Kit will be on display at the IVS booth (#3062), located in the "Aftermarket Zone," from Saturday, Feb. 13 through Monday, Feb. 15, at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando.

IVS created the HAVOC Aero Kit to deliver top-of-the- line performance and styling, while allowing Camaro owners to tailor their own look with the kit's build-your-own custom approach. The kit is now available to dealerships nationwide.

"The HAVOC Camaro Aero Kit gives dealers a chance to offer their customers a totally personalized, custom-built experience," said Adam Moore, business development manager, performance/aftermarket, IVS. "The kit provides enthusiasts with options that are paramount in terms of design, quality and cost, and provides dealers with a strong sales opportunity."

The HAVOC Camaro Aero Kit includes:

Custom 20" HAVOC wheels, available in both black PVD and bright PVD coatings, which are tooled to standard OEM size, so no new tire purchase is required;

Lower front chin spoiler with brake cooling openings;

Side lower rockers featuring accent lines that tie-in with the front chin spoiler;

Aggressively styled rear spoiler;

Rear two-piece diffuser with paintable outer section and optional carbon fiber hydrographics on the center section, designed to provide an assertive look and hide stock exhaust cans; and

Custom side and hood graphics package.

The HAVOC Aero kit is made from reaction injection molding (RIM) material, production-tooled, designed to OEM specifications and mostly uses stock attachment points, which minimizes modification for body fitting. With individual kit pieces ranging from MSRP $225 to MSRP $625, the HAVOC offers Camaro owners an affordable way to customize.

"We're thrilled to launch the HAVOC Camaro Aero Kit to the dealer network and what better place to do it than the NADA Convention?" said Scott Ronan, president of IVS. "The popularity of this kit has been growing daily since previewed to the aftermarket at the SEMA show this fall. We believe the HAVOC kit, and all of our products at IVS, push the creative envelope and offer something unique to dealers and their customers."

Camaro Powertrain Packages

For those who want to upgrade the horsepower of their Camaro, Powertrain Integration, an IVS-affiliate company that provides engine, transmission and drivetrain solutions to the niche market, is offering engine packages that can be purchased in conjunction with the HAVOC Aero Kit or separately.

The Powertrain Integration kit is a bolt-in conversion, including the engine, computer controls and accessories necessary for a simplified installation. Customers can also choose to have Powertrain Integration build the complete vehicle with various engine and horsepower options.

Based in metro Detroit, both Innovative Vehicle Solutions and Powertrain Integration are committed to personal customer attention and satisfaction, as well as producing the highest quality performance accessories to provide years of continued reliability.

IVS specializes in vehicle personalization enhancements, creating specialty accessories for the Corvette C5/C6, the 5th Generation Camaro and a line of rear vision systems (RVS) which eliminate blind spots and help improve driver safety.

Whether it's concept or creation, the IVS team combines cutting-edge technology with superior design to capture the spirit of the open road, testing the limits of passion and performance. IVS continues to develop accessory programs, styling kits and specialty automotive components that are marketed directly, or in conjunction with, vehicle up-fitters and dealer networks. www.ivsauto.com

Powertrain Integration is the automotive industry's premiere total system solution company for GM OEM engines, transmissions and complete drivetrains. The company provides the broadest range of systems, engine components and services, specifically focusing on the unique needs of the niche OEM automakers. From low to high volume programs, Powertrain Integration provides the customer with complete packaging, design, engineering, emissions certification and dress assembly capability for the complete powertrain system. www.powertrainintegration.com

Feb. 12–Peter Yesawich reserved a plane ticket to Hilton Head Island and picked his seat from his mobile phone.

Just for kicks, he later went back and changed his seat — also on his phone.

He did so to demonstrate to area business leaders how factors such as mobility and personalization are changing the travel industry.

Yesawich is chairman and CEO of Ypartnership, a global travel, leisure and entertainment marketing firm based in Orlando, Fla.

He spoke Thursday about the future of tourism during an event organized by the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce at the Crowne Plaza Resort.

Although the recession has changed our travel habits, plenty of profit awaits companies able to recognize and adapt to the latest lifestyle, demographic and technological trends, he said.

"The business is there," he said. "You have to be creative in how you get it."

Highlights from Yesawich’s presentation:

–As travelers increasingly go online to look for and make reservations, they’re becoming "brand agnostic," and companies are having to succumb to "pricing transparency."

Catering to that clientele, search engines such as kayak.com survey multiple sites to find deals on hotels, cars, flights and the like.

–While many travelers use social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, they don’t often use them to plan trips — at least not yet.

"I want to disabuse you of the notion everybody’s doing it."

As that changes, businesses should be sensitive to what consumers are saying about them online because those opinions influence others.

Sites such as twitrratr.com, twendz.com and chatmine.com can help you stay on top of what the world is saying about you.

–Only a fifth of mobile phone handsets today are capable of accessing the Internet, but that fraction is poised to increase dramatically.

That presents opportunities for consumers to scan bar codes on ads or products to get more information or compare prices. RedLaser, an application for that purpose, is available for Apple’s iPhone, for example.

The impending increase in the use of so-called "smartphones" also presents opportunities for businesses to do "intercept marketing" by sending coupons to entice nearby travelers or offering "flash sales" for a limited time to loyal customers.

–The rise of e-mail has added an hour to the average workday, increasing travelers’ desire to get away for "speed vacations" that allow them to "hurry up and relax."

"Time is the commodity of greatest value."

–To combat the recession, many tourism-related businesses began to offer deals in the fall of 2008, but not all did so effectively.

People don’t need to be coaxed into traveling, but are cutting back on how long they stay, meaning tourism businesses such as hotels should focus their energies on giving consumers a reason to stick around.

"Spend your money and your creativity on trying to add that night back."

–Hilton Head Island’s tourists tend to be affluent, but they’re also value-oriented.

"These are folks that make a lot of money, but they want the free breakfast."

Feb. 12–GRAND PRAIRIE — The NBA and WNBA greats filling a cafeteria stage at Farrell Elementary on Wednesday weren’t there to talk about basketball stats or championship games.

Instead, their focus was reading. Former first lady Laura Bush even joined them at the Arlington district campus in Grand Prairie to reinforce the message.

"It’s the most important skill you learn in school," Bush, a former librarian, told the students. "If you can read, you can do well in every single subject."

The celebrity visitors were part of the NBA Cares All-Star Community Caravan, a series of service events in conjunction with the All-Star Game. The NBA plans to have 25 such events and programs in North Texas this year.

Arlington district officials and representatives from the Mavericks and the National Basketball Association have worked together for months to create a Reading and Learning Center in Farrell’s library.

The project, sponsored by the NBA, Hewlett-Packard and the Got Milk? ad campaign, included new books, carpet and furniture. The Mavericks theme showed up in everything from the blue and black beanbag chairs to the life-size Jason Terry and Dirk Nowitzki decals on the wall.

The school also received 12 new HP computers with large touch screens, three laptops and three printers.

‘Read All About It’

"It’s cool and awesome and beautiful," said Jada Castillo, a second-grader.

Jada and 29 other first- through third-graders were treated to a book reading by Bush, Terry and retired NBA player Dikembe Mutombo in the library after the "reading rally" in the cafeteria. They took turns reading from Read All About It!, which Bush wrote with daughter Jenna.

Terry called the new library "phenomenal" and said he enjoyed spending time with the students. "You see the smiles on their faces and the excitement. To know that they have somewhere they can come and enjoy these books, that means a lot," he said.

In other classrooms throughout the school, players like Ashley Robinson of the WNBA, who grew up in Grand Prairie, and Felipe Lopez, formerly of the NBA, also read to students.

Farrell was one of three Arlington elementary schools chosen at random for the NBA to be considered for the library renovation. It is the district’s first Title I school to receive a state rating of exemplary. Title I schools receive extra federal money to address the needs of their high percentage of low-income students. Sixty-two percent of Farrell’s students qualify for free and reduced-rate lunches.

Other events

Principal Jeanne Pakele-Curtis said the community support from the NBA and other sponsors makes the students feel their hard work is appreciated.

"It’s a blessing. It’s an honor," she said.

NBA Cares’ other community service events this week include fitness clinics at local Boys & Girls Clubs and YMCAs and a vaccine clinic at a Fort Worth campus, both today.

On Friday, numerous NBA players and family members will fan out throughout Dallas and at Arlington’s Summit International Preparatory school for the NBA Cares All-Star Day of Service. On Friday evening, about 700 Arlington seventh-graders will get a free trip to the NBA’s T-Mobile Rookie Challenge & Youth Jam.

Feb. 12–It’s no beauty, but this robot — so far just a metal frame stuffed full of wires and parts — rolls on wicked wheels and is designed to take on some tough competition.

A project of Greg D’Alessandro and Aaron Smith, the two pre-engineering seniors at the Academy for Arts, Science & Technology put their creation through its paces for a seminar at the inaugural Grand Strand Tech Expo held Thursday at the Crown Reef Resort Conference Center in Myrtle Beach.

Sponsored by the Grand Strand Technology Council, the expo featured 45 exhibitors using 50 spaces, with some having to be turned away, said John Sanders, chairman of the council. Seminars were held throughout the day in two conference rooms, and the event was free to the public.

"We decided it was time we bust out and let the world know there’s technology around the Grand Strand," Sanders said.

Economic development is moving along in the area, Sanders said, citing the area’s aviation park project, but that will take several years to fully develop. Technology can help fill an economic void here because "so much of the [tech] business is done by computer and Internet" and doesn’t need a huge manufacturing hub.

"This is laying the groundwork," Sanders said. "In the next few years, we can stand out."

The idea for the expo came from technology council meetings several months ago, Sanders said. He said the council is a two-year-old, nonprofit and all-volunteer group that includes 35 member organizations, small and large companies as well as schools and government.

The academy students’ demonstration was part of the Horry County Schools presentation, which highlighted projects in progress at both AAST and the Academy for Technology & Academics. Coastal Carolina University and Horry-Georgetown Technical College also exhibited at the expo, alongside a variety of businesses, government and technology professionals.

Dorothy Bambach, with the S.C. School for the Deaf and Blind outreach center in Conway, was staffing a booth for the S.C. Equipment Distribution Program, showing people how technology is aiding the disabled. Her display included a variety of telephones, as well as a bed shaker, a device that goes underneath a pillow and is attached to an alarm clock. The device vibrates at the appropriate time to awaken the hearing impaired.

"This is all free to residents of South Carolina with a signoff from a licensed professional and who have a land line," Bambach said, pointing out a phone that provides captions. "We’re here to tell the community about this wonderful program."

Mainline Information Systems, headquartered in Tallahassee, Fla., sells IBM technology and services, and brought its presentation to the expo.

"We thought it was important to acquaint folks in the area with the services we provide," said Steve Edgar, a company representative. "There’s great traffic. I think by the end of the day, we’ll be very pleased."

Sanders, who lived in Washington, D.C., for 40 years and moved here four years ago, said this type of event sends the message that there’s more to the Grand Strand area than just tourism and said he knew this region could attract entrepreneurial businesses.

"They’re going to locate where the CEO wants to live, and this is a nice place to live," Sanders said.

"There’s more to offer with schools like Coastal Carolina and with HGTC … and you start off with a base of employees that are really necessary for a tech business, [as well as] retirees who have moved here and worked in bigger companies and want to get back into things.

"[Also], you’ve got to have schools that [CEOs] want to send their kids to. These two technology academies are first class, and the other schools have very strong computer training. … [The schools are] really up to it."

D’Alessandro and Smith are going to put that to the test. They have entered the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) robotics competition, and they’ll be pitted against 18,000 teams worldwide, D’Alessandro said.

ATA also has entered a team, and these are the only teams from Horry County, said Bucky Sellers, pre-engineering instructor at AAST.

It’s an expensive process — $6,000 alone just to enter — so each team is aided by sponsorships. They receive a kit of basic parts but fabricate most from scratch, he said. Students have just six weeks to complete the project, which will be shipped for competition Feb. 23.

Sellers said this year’s challenge is a soccer contest, with six robots on the field, and they will have to control the ball without picking it up, kick and score. The robot can kick about 25 feet into the air, he said, and bonus points can be had if it can grab a 7-foot bar and pull itself up.

Right now, the robot is without its kicking device, and there will be a nice covering made to enclose the exposed parts.

"It will look a lot prettier," Sellers promised.
