ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) — Polish authorities in Pakistan say they are monitoring local reports that Taliban militants have executed a kidnapped Polish engineer.

Piotr Stancza was kidnapped September 28 from the city of Attock in the Punjab province. Stancza had been based there for a Polish survey company searching for natural gas.
Local reports and TV station Dawn News reported Stancza’s execution Saturday.

Polish embassy spokesman Peter Adams told CNN his offices were aware of the local media reports but were waiting to hear officially from Pakistani authorities. He said all efforts had been made by Polish authorities to pressure the Pakistani government to do whatever it could to secure Stancza’s release.
"From the Polish side we did whatever we could, pressuring the Pakistani government on the presidential and prime minister level," Adams said. "Problem was, this was solely Pakistan’s responsibility. Demands were only towards (the) Pakistan government."

Adams said there had been no demands for ransom. The Taliban had demanded the release of Taliban prisoners being held by the government and a pullout of government security forces from the tribal areas.
While there were assurances that the Pakistani government was doing everything it could and that Stancza would be freed soon, Adams said it was never clear what the government was actually doing to secure his release.
"We are waiting for confirmation and waiting for any answer (about) how this happened and why did this happen," Adams said.
A spokesman for Pakistan’s interior ministry said the reports of Stancza’s death have yet to be confirmed and that the case of his kidnapping was a high priority for the government. Shahid Ullah Baig said the government had been working hard to retrieve Stancza unharmed but did not give details.
"The Pakistan government is doing its level best to secure his release," he said, adding, "Human life is more important to us than anything else."
Kidnappings and attacks against foreigners have risen sharply in recent months throughout the country. Most recently, an American working for the United Nations was kidnapped in Quetta, and Peshawar has also been the scene of various attacks against foreign diplomats and journalists.

Arsenal have finally completed the transfer of Andrei Arshavin from Zenit St Petersburg for an undisclosed fee.
The 27-year-old Russia international agreed a “long-term” deal with the Gunners on Monday.
Final confirmation of the move was held up while the Premier League assessed whether all the necessary paperwork had been completed before the deadline.
Zenit have claimed the fee to be 16.9m Euros, a record for Arsenal, but this has not been confirmed by the Gunners.
“I am so happy to be joining Arsenal,” Arshavin said. “They are one of the leading football clubs in the world.”
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said: “He is a versatile player with great sci-fi movies experience, who will add real quality to our squad.
“Andrei is an exciting impact player with a huge amount of ability and has been an influential force with both Zenit St Petersburg and the Russian national team in recent seasons.”
The two clubs had earlier disagreed over download animation movies the fee and over Arshavin’s own personal terms.

But Arshavin travelled to London on Monday for a medical to complete the deal and, it is understood, will now return to Russia to complete some personal arrangements before starting work at his new club.
He could now make his debut in Sunday’s north London derby at Tottenham but given that the Russian domestic season finished in November the player is more likely to be allowed some time to build up full match fitness.
He will be unable to figure in the Gunners’ Champions League campaign as he has already featured for Zenit in the competition.
Arshavin shot to prominence at Euro 2008 where his performances for Russia earned him a place in the ‘Team of the Tournament’.
He won the Russian Premier League with Zenit in 2007 and was also played a key part in the club’s UEFA Cup winning campaign last season.

The House passes the stimulus
THE House has passed its $819 billion stimulus bill on a largely party-line vote. Despite Barack Obama’s last-minute efforts to woo Republicans, the House GOP remained unswayed, determined to vote against the plan. Instead, they offered a tax-cut heavy package that, they said, would do more to benefit every income-tax payer. But it failed shortly before the final vote on the Democrats’ bill.
Not exactly what Mr Obama had in mind when he spoke of bringing people together? Perhaps, but House Republicans had little incentive to support the Democrats’ version. Not only do most of them represent rather conservative districts, few will remember their opposition if the stimulus works. And if it doesn’t, they get to say they opposed it in the first place. Their “nay” votes never had much chance of actually stopping the stimulus, after all. On that, the GOP is far more consequential in the Senate.
As debate dragged on today, David Obey, chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, argued that, when their votes do matter—that is, in the Senate—the Republicans will come around to supporting the stimulus in droves. Indeed, Mr Obama’s target for gathering bi-partisan support has always been in the Senate, where he once aimed for the stimulus to garner 80 votes. It probably won’t, even though Mr Obama insisted on a healthy portion of the bill going to tax cuts. The question now is: who will be in the tiny handful of Republicans the Democrats need to get the bill through? And, more importantly, what will they want?
