Has the world gone insane? A “black” Friday indeed.

I’ll admit, we were at Sears Friday morning for Black Friday. We knew what we wanted, we found a great deal and we woke up insanely early Friday morning to go shopping. My husband and I don’t normally shop on Black Friday, but we did this year and it was actually fun. But while we were there, we saw one middle-aged gentleman LOSING IT because he had to wait 10 minutes to get his TV. I mean, the guy was STEAMED. Come on, dude, it’s 10 minutes. Big deal. And it was obvious the employees were stressed, busy and doing the best they could. I wanted to tell him to chill out, but I was afraid he might knock me out instead.

Then we got home and my sister shared this story with me (read it here). A Walmart employee in Long Island was trampled to death by crazed shoppers when the doors opened at 5:00 am. Four shoppers, including an 8-month pregnant woman, were also injured. It made me sick to my stomach. I thought the guy we saw at Sears was out of line, but apparently he’s a saint compared to the crowd at that Long Island Walmart.

What is our society coming to? Stuff was more important than life on Friday morning at that Walmart store.

A witness, who described the crowd as “savages” said, “”When they were saying they had to leave, that an employee got killed, people were yelling, ‘I’ve been on line since Friday morning!’ They kept shopping.” (Source NY Daily News)

My heart hurts just thinking about it. And when the store reopened later in the day? Packed within minutes. Not only did the initial event NOT give these shoppers pause, but they were right back in the store first chance they got.

I don’t have much to say except I’m shocked that something like this could happen. I truly am surprised. Maybe I’m too optimistic about humanity. But I honestly feel like when bad things happen to others, people step up. They come together and help. And, yeah, I know sometimes they don’t. But what disturbs me most about this particular event is that greed was the plain and simple reason this young man died. Maybe Walmart should have had more security on hand, but I don’t think that is the issue here. The shoppers outside that store should have known better.
