Unemployment rate continues to rise; will hit 8.5% in 2009
Some economists are predicting that the unemployment rate will hit 8.5% in 2009. Today, we already hit 8.5% unemployment rate when not seasonally adjusted, up from 7.1% in December and 5.4% a year ago. January is typically the highest month for the unemployment rate. According to “The Employment Situation” for January 2009, released today by the U.S. Department of Labor, seasonally adjusted, the unemployment rate was 7.6%, up from 7.2% in December and 4.9% a year ago. Since 1948, the unemployment rate has never risen by more than .5% in a 12 month span without entering into a recession. The unemployment rate is now up 2.7 percentage points in the last twelve months and is up 3.2 percentage points from its recent low of 4.4%.
Nonfarm payrolls decreased by 598,000 in January, 577,000 in December cheap cialis, and 597,000 in November. This month they revised the previous two months of December and November downward by 66,000 jobs. In December they revised downward the amount of jobs lost in the previous two months by 154,000. In November, they made a downward revision of 199,000. They also made huge revisions for last year and revised as far back to 2004. Last month, the total jobs lost from December 2007 to December 2008 was reported to be 2,589,000. This month, with the revisions, the total jobs lost from December 2007 to January 2009 has reached 3,572,000 jobs. The average recession since World War II has had a loss of 1,917,000 jobs on average. The biggest loss before this recession came in 1982 with 2,838,000 jobs lost. In terms of job loss, we are in the biggest recession since the Great Depression. And the end is not in sight yet.
The U.S. Department of Labor released the Weekly Claims data for Unemployment Insurance yesterday. Initial claims were at 626,000 for the week ending January 31st. This is up from the previous week’s number of 591,000. The four week average of initial claims, which is not as volatile, was at 582,250. This is up from the previous week’s figure of 543,250. Continued claims for unemployment insurance increased to 4,788,000 for the week ending January 24th up from the previous week’s number of 4,768,000. 
The four week average for continued claims was also up to 4,672,000 from 4,628,000. This is the highest continued claims has ever been. The previous high was in 1982. Initial claims is faster to move up and signals increases in the unemployment rate. Continued claims take longer to go down than the initial claims once the unemployment rate is elevated. Obama In, ‘House’ Out
One of the most competitive nights on TV gets a little more so on Monday when President Obama’s first press conference plays havoc with the network schedules.
It’s the first of three such prime time interruptions from the White House planned for as many weeks this month, with a reported address about the stimulus program Feb. 16 and the State of the Union styled address to Congress Feb. 24.
On Monday, the first press conference from the 44th president is set from 8 to 9 p.m., bumping the scheduled new episodes of “Chuck,” “The Bi Bang Theory,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “The Bachelor” and “House” (but Fox will have the Presidential criris on “24′ to follow at 9).
The one broadcast network that was planning a rerun - The CW - is also the only one who routinely doesn’t cover such events. So its telecast that night will end with a more unusual sign-off: “XOXO, Gossip Girl.”

Microsoft Says Windows 7 UAC Vulnerability Fixed
microsoft on thursday elaborated on plans recompense the six versions of windows 7 and said it fixed vulnerabilities in the user account lead security feature. the software Amazon said the uac difficult has been fixed in post-beta builds not yet released.
Of the six versions, Microsoft said Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional will meet most customers’ needs. Home Premium provides basic functionality, while Professional is meant for people who work from home, but neither animation movies will have some security features found in an IT or business environment.

Those security features include Applocker, BranchCache, BitLocker and DirectAccess. Applocker lets IT professionals decide what is allowed to run on a user’s desktop, and BranchCache caches HTTP and Server Message Block content. BitLocker helps prevent data loss, and DirectAccess secures remote connections.
“Some of these features are really enterprise features,” said Michael Silver, a Gartner analyst. “Really, the one that’s most debatable is BitLocker,” a drive-encryption technology introduced in Windows Vista.
“At a conference once, [Microsoft CEO] Steve Ballmer even mentioned BitLocker as something that could be beneficial for everyone,” Silver said. “These features are available to consumers in Ultimate, but that SKU is likely to be even less common under Windows 7 than it is today.”
The Upgrade Path
Microsoft, however, said only a small set of customers want everything Windows 7 has to offer, which are all available in the Windows 7 Ultimate edition. Ultimate download sci-fi comes with BitLocker, which is also found in the Windows 7 Enterprise edition.
“If they want full volume security, they would have two choices — upgrade to Ultimate or buy a third-party encryption product,” Silver said. “Buying a third-party product may make more sense, may be cheaper, and more consumer-oriented in terms of key recovery.”
Microsoft hasn’t announced pricing and isn’t ready to offer any guidance on which PCs are best…

Find ?Em On Twitter: 15 Twitter Directories Compared
Searching for people or applications on Twitter? Good luck with that. Since Twitter offers little in the way of people search features (though they now have a suggestion tool), your search for interesting and dynamic people to follow and applications to use could be a giant time suck.
Mac cosmetics
Thankfully there are more than a few third-party resources that you can turn to for finding new people to follow, and new tools to help you do what Twitter won’t let you. We’ll shed a little light on these 15 directories by separating them into four categories: applications, people, politics, and strictly business.
Applications
Twitter Fan Wiki
Overview: The apps section of Twitter Fan Wiki is like Wikipedia for Twitter apps, so it’s for you, buy you mentality, making it the most robust in terms of applications listed, but potentially the most unreliable if entries aren’t current. Applications are broken down into three categories: desktop apps, web apps, and mobile apps. And with subcategories under each heading, Twitter Fan Wiki makes it easy to drill down to just the apps you want to research.
What you might like: There are lots and lots of applications, so you’re bound to happen upon something new and cool that you didn’t even know existed.
What you won’t get: There’s a limited feature set, which means you can rate, sort, or comment on applications. Listings just include links and a short text description, so it’s impossible to get a good overview of each apps feature set without clicking through to the actual websites.
Twitdom
Overview: Twitdom, which launched with 50+ apps and now houses more than 300, uses Wordpress as a platform to display information on Twitter applications and let users navigate category types via tabs to find desktop, mobile, or web apps, browser plugins, and mashups.
What you might like: Application profiles. Each application has a short profile that also lists related applications. Users can also comment on or rate the applications. And even though it’s easy to miss, users can view the highest rated applications across the site by clicking the Popular link at the top of the site.
What you won’t get: Birdseye view. There’s plenty of applications to choose from, but it’s hard to get a good overview of the entire collection. This makes it especially difficult to sort through the growing list if you’re just browsing and don’t know exactly what you want.
Twtbase
Overview: Similar to Twitdom, Twtbase also houses their database of applications within Wordpress and divvies them up into either the web, mobile, desktop, or browser plug-in buckets.
What you might like: The thumbnail view. Each application has a screenshot, displays current rating, and number of votes. Twtbase also has a Site of the Day page that features one app per day.
What you won’t get: Selection. It’s difficult to ascertain exactly how many apps Twtbase has, but this reviewer estimates they’ve got about 80 applications in their database.
Twitter Forge
Overview: An offshoot of the Twittown blog, Twitter Forge is probably the most basic of the bunch but highlights everything Twitter related. The directory lists apps by categories like geo-locators, games, instant message, mobile devices, and web services. Each category displays associated apps with short descriptions where users can rate the app via the up/down arrow, add their comments, or view the apps total points.
What you might like: Variety. The Twitter Forge collection goes beyond just apps to include other unique Twitter related items.
What you won’t get: Current information. A lot of the entries haven’t been updated in awhile, which means that you probably won’t find the most current apps here.
Twapps
Overview: In the same vein as Twtbase, Twapps highlights each app with a thumbnail image and comment content on the home page. Users can navigate category tabs to search for desktop apps, Firefox plugins, mobile, and web apps.
What you might like: Look and feel. The site is easy on the eyes, and since there’s only about 90 apps listed you won’t get overwhelmed by selection.
What you won’t get: Ratings. Unlike similar application databases, Twapps won’t let you add a rating or display related applications.

Twellow
Overview: When we last wrote about Twellow they had already indexed over 300,000 twitter users and now they’re up to 842,000 plus people in their database.
