Chet Edwards says Texas Dems need a “Mark Warner” to win statewide

Texas Dems have closed their deficit in the state house by 2 seats. Democrats nearly swept the Harris County judicial races on Tuesday, as they did in Dallas County four years ago. Clearly, Texas Dems are on the rise.

Rep. Chet Edwards, whose dalliance with becoming Barack Obama’s running mate turned him into somewhat of a party star, says Texas is “where Virginia was a decade ago.” Virginia now appears to be a true battleground state, after handing its electoral votes to Obama and electing another Democrat, Mark Warner, to the U.S. Senate.

“Texas has not had a Mark Warner to break through at the statewide level,” Mr Edwards said during a phone interview. “That could well happen in 2010. But it will take a committed, well-funded candidate to win statewide.”

Mr. Warner built a $200 million fortune before he successfully ran for governor in 2001. He spent about $4.7 million of personal money on the race (he earlier spent $10 million trying to win a Senate seat). Edwards suggested a similar candidate could win in Texas — “some young business entrepreneur who has made $100 million and wants to give something back to his or her state,” he said. A lack of political experience would help: “Someone who has never cast a single vote that could be misrepresented in a 30-second TV ad.”

One could argue that Tony Sanchez was such a candidate, and it didn’t work for him in 2002. But Edwards suggested recent Democratic gains in the Texas House augur well for 2010. “If half the population is represented by Democrats, then someone could very well win a statewide race,” he said.
