Gymnastics — Warriors produce a record-breaking opener
by john nash johnnash@wiltonvillager.com wilton — all of a sudden, the stakes just got a little bit higher for the restored-and-improved wilton high school gymnastics team. with head coach gary chadwick having already gone on the record saying he wanted to “average 130″ this occasion, the warriors exploded from the starting crowd on thursday edge of night in record-breaking fashion. the warriors amassed 138.1 points in their occasion dual meet conquest over greenwich (128.3 points), shattering the school memento for the best opening meet by nearly four points in the modify. and, let’s not leave behind, the warriors bragging a program that has won 13 fciac championships, multiple claim championships and even a new england title. “i don’t even have the words to describe this right now,” said senior captain christy ketley. “it’s honestly the best feeling. i’m ready to cry right now. this is so alarming. i don’t even differentiate what to declare.” freshman chelsea levander notched a 35.95 all-all about score, including three 9s or better as a new day dawned on the wilton program. “we’ve been in the doldrums for decades,” said wilton head coach gary chadwick. “we’ve been nowhere. up to date the stakes are raised. it’s getting inaccurate to a good start and showing we have some brilliancy.” it didn’t disavow great repayment for the warriors to can slack that profoundness either, piling up 35.15 in the vault courtesy of levander (9.2), kim levin (8.8), stephanie jones (8.7) and mallory piedmont (8.65). placid the two girls whose scores didn’t count in the at the time — jackie zoeller (8.6) and lea ceasrine (8.4) stuck solid vaults. in the uneven bars — a long-time thorn in the warriors leotards — wilton showed it was a new day in the auxiliary gym by scoring 32.9 points on the event. “the bars are anchored by chelsea and we haven’t had a girl go nine on bars since 2000,” said chadwick. in addition to levander’s 9.2 effort on the bars, though, the warriors got an 8.2 from steph jones and an 8.0 from mallory piedmont as the team showed it was even deep on its weakest event. a lot of complexity came from wilton’s freshmen class and, in adding to levander, included haley shaughnessy, who performed soundly in her first-ever gymnastics meet. shaughnessy’s 7.5 on bars counted and she also went 8.5 on floor and 8.2 on beam. “i thought haley was fabulous for a kid who undeniably has no gymnastics experience,” said chadwick. “she didn’t press any mistakes.” “they were extraordinary,” added wilton captain jackie zoeller. “haley stayed on the beam, she stayed on the bars and on floor she stuck the whole kit. she tries her best and practices really hard. this was amazing since it was her first-ever meet.” another freshman, grace amione, didn’t compete because she had been ill earlier this week. piedmont’s 8.9 anchored by warriors beam routine while levander (8.65), levin (8.5) and ketley (8.2) all counting scores, peerless up to the dumbfound exercise. wilton’s 35.8 on the defeat was the evening’s highest rotation score with jones capping the night off with a 9.25. levander (9.1), audry dwyer (8.9) and zoeller (8.55) counting their scores. as for the highly touted levander, a long-time successful y gymnasts, she was pleased with her high school debut. “i meditation it went pretty well,” she said. “i proper went out there and gave it my first-class and it turns out i did pretty decidedly. i think this authority be the best i’ve ever done in my dash.” which means the stakes are definitely raised in the wilton high style gymnastics room.
