A FEW MINUTES A DAY: Get started with a body bar

Using a body bar in your exercise routine provides an alternative to traditional free weights and may keep you from plateauing in weight loss, a local fitness expert said.”Boredom happens a lot,” said Amy Rathje, fitness manager at the YMCA. “With the body bar, you can shake it up at home and at the gym to make a fun workout.”The bar Rathje described is usually about 4 feet long and comes in a variety of weights. Instead of sliding plates onto a traditional weight-lifting bar, the body bar doesn’t require plates — you work with the bar only. This design holds a number of benefits, Rathje said.”The weight is evenly distributed across the bar, so it makes it easier for someone to keep stability,” she said. “It means there are no loose parts, no attachments, like with free weight bars.”She said the bar is a good option for people who already lift weights but want to shake up their workouts.”We get used to working our bodies in a certain way, with certain results. The (body bar) does challenge your body in a different way.”Adding new things to your workout routine will keep you from hitting a weight-loss plateau, Rathje said. “You need to challenge your body in different ways about every three months to avoid plateauing,” she said.People with any kind of medical condition should consult their physicians before starting any exercise program, she said. With regard to the body bar, people need to adhere to doctors’ restrictions on weight. “Some people can still do the exercises without a weighted body bar,” she said. “They can use a pole to get the same range of motion.”For people who want to work with a weighted bar, Rathje recommended selecting a weight that will be comfortable to use in the first eight to 12 repetitions of a set of exercises, with the last four reps difficult but not impossible. She said it’s always a good idea to start out with lighter weight to make sure you maintain good form throughout the exercises.”Always start a little lighter. A lot of times, our ego gets in the way,” she said.If you have to swing your upper body or hips to lift the bar, it’s too heavy, Rathje said.Where to buyLocal sporting goods stores don’t stock the body bar. However, you can buy one online at www.bodybar.com in a variety of weights. Bars range in price from $26 to $70, plus shipping.
