On College Gameday yesterday, I did my first doubletake of the college football season. I don’t often bother getting up early enough to watch, and after what I witnessed, I’m kind of wishing I hadn’t.
The ever-inquisitive (and sometimes mildly annoying) Tom Rinaldi had a sit-down interview with Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez, basically to discuss how bad the Wolverines have sucked this year. For those of you who missed it, here’s how that incredible dialogue began:
Yes, you heard correctly. Rodriguez “didn’t research” the football team he was coming to Ann Arbor to coach, and therefore “didn’t know” he was losing so many starters and so much talent.
I had to rewind my DVR about a half dozen times to make sure I had heard that statement correctly. Rodriguez is saying that he spent no time looking into the situation he was inheriting, which also apparently means he completely ignores the media, since everybody from ESPN to Joe Blogger was talking about how much talent the Wolverines would be losing, from the time the ‘07 season was winding down and well before Rodriguez took the position.
He then went on to make the statement that he assumed that because of Michigan’s reputation, he would have and/or recruit talent right off the bat that would turn out a 6-6 season simply by going out and doing their best. Again, had he read anything written about his team in the three months before or after his hiring, he would never have assumed this.
His last error was making the statement that beating Ohio State and winning Michigan’s biggest rival would in no way salvage the season. Probably a statement that didn’t thrill the alumni, since they donate money and would probably disagree.
RichRod will have to hope for some leniency and patience from the Wolverine faithful. He went 3-9 his first year at WVU as well, but his team hit the ground running at 9-3 the next year and never looked back in large part because the Big East sucks. At Michigan, his best case scenario is probably a 2010 season that looks like Michigan State’s season this year.
Until then, Rodriguez should probably do himself a favor and just shut up and coach.
