Sailing to Bermuda - Epilogue

Ok, finally back in Chicago. Trip appears to be back on in June to coincide with an Annapolis-Bermuda race. We won’t participate formally but will tag along and try to poach the after-party.

Over the weekend, I wavered quite a bit over whether we were overly cautious cancelling the trip. But, the reality of a sailing trip is that its not like a normal vacation - you can’t force things to happen when the boat or the weather or both don’t want it to. The following email from Captain Roark to the crew on Sunday says it all.

As you know,”Yellow Bird” did not leave the slip on the Chesapeake Bay very far behind, before we ran into the first storm. On the night of departure, rain storms on the Bay forced a decision to turn back and wait for weather.

at the conditions, i was a bit reluctant to announce it was very likely best not to proceed, for fear the crew wouldn’t take it equably. the crew was respectful of my instincts (which i appreciated) and we did go back in the minuscule hours of friday morning to the opulence of our elapse in holiday hill marina.friday evening, in the let bay (where we would keep been had we not turned back) an english couple suffered a dismasting, and after exhuasting all their flares with getting a rescue, were able to sos with a flashlight to a passing merchant ship. the coast guard was alerted and the combine were removed to safety. i checked with the atlantic cup returning pick up website. these sailors were scheduled to leave bermuda for the trip home to the chesapeake bay a only one days one-time to yellow birds departure. in fact, we expected we would pass them aloong the way. when i checked their most up to date “log” postings i discovered they are “pinned down” in bermuda. below is a copy of the most recent postings, by the carib1500 returning sailors.

Late season gales leaving the US coast continue to pin down the fleet waiting in Bermuda. The next window of opportunity looks like Sunday morning.

The gales keep coming and the fleet has gathered on a vacant cruise ship dock to sit out the wet and windy weather. They are likely to remain in Bermuda until next Wednesday.
