Tekonsha lays off one teacher, supervisor

During a recent meeting of the Tekonsha Board of Education, Superintendent Tom Cameron highlighted the district’s financial struggles as a result of a decrease in student enrollment. With a loss of 37 students from the spring count to the fall one, the district is left with 317 students. At approximately $7,300 each, and with budget expenditures, Camer-on said the district will have a $438,000 shortfall in funds. He explained that though the general fund was previously in good shape at roughly $750,000, the shortfall will leave the fund with only around $300,000 by the end of the year.“This is a reflection of what is going on all around the state,” he said. “Everybody is in the same boat.”Cameron said the loss of students is mainly due to the unsteady economy in Michigan, with many leaving the state in pursuit of employment opportunities. He added that while many reductions have already been made, he is recommending some cuts to “increase financial stability” within the district. His hope is to salvage $137,000 from the budget by the end of the school year.Cameron also pointed out that the savings “won’t solve the problem, but it will put the problem off another year.”For the complete story, please visit extras.thedailyreporter.com.
