Subway to yank Michael Phelps? Dumb idea, dudes
Subway is the latest company to pull the plug on its Michael Phelps sponsorship.
And unlike Kellogg’s, whose contract with the Olympics champ swimmer is up soon, Subway just signed Michael Phelps on Nov. 21, 2008!
Here’s what the proud company said at the time:
“Subway takes pride in being a healthy and active brand - one that can be a regular part of these world class athletes’ routines,” states Tony Pace, chief marketing officer of the Subway Franchisee Advertising Fund Trust. “We knew Michael Phelps was a big fan of our sandwiches and we wanted to build on that with him to illustrate that Subway is a brand that can play a role in helping everyone — from elite athletes to weekend joggers — perform at their peak levels and make healthier, smarter choices about food, whatever the activity.”
But now, Phelps has been removed from the Subway website and, as Buzznewsroom.com reports, even (shudder) delinked. Oh, the horror.
Looks as if Michael might even have to give back the endorsement moola.
I personally think Subway is being very short-sighted and narrow-minded. And they’re missing out on a major marketing ploy courtesy of Phelps’ bong-toking photo.

Got the munchies? Head for Subway!
I’m telling you guys, it’s genius.
BREAKING NEWS:
SUBWAY WON’T DUMP PHELPS!
Subway has removed Phelps from their website.
But they aren’t getting rid of him entirely.
“Like most Americans, and like Michael Phelps himself, we were disappointed in his behavior,” Megan Driscoll, the rep for Subway, tells Usmagazine.com. “Also like most Americans, we accept his apology. Moving forward, he remains in our plans.”Other sponsors sticking by Phelps: Visa, Speedo comprare levitra, Omega watches and athletic drink PureSports.

The ethical journalist’s guide to selling ads on a website: Part one
by robert niles: the retaliation to my piece two weeks ago illustrates that the intimation of a reporter selling ads on his or her website remains a troubling one for many would-be online publishers. so i indisputable to present a step-by-progress b increase counsellor describing how a journalist can sell ads without compromising his or her ability to report accurately.
Step 1) Commit to learning about ad sales with same dedication you brought to learning about reporting.
When you start your own website, you no longer are merely a reporter. You’ve become a publisher, with all the additional duties that this position requires. In the highly competitive marketplace of online publishing, you must succeed in each of those areas if you site is to be successful. (Relevant cliche: “A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.”) So you must commit to learning about your content management system, cultivating and inspiring your readership, recording and managing your expenses… and earning money from your site.
Sea cruise
As I have thought about my experience with my personal websites, I kept coming back to my experience working at Walt Disney World. As an undergraduate at Northwestern, I worked at Disney during my school breaks, running rides at the Magic Kingdom theme park. (Yes, that’s how I got into running a theme park website.) Disney trained its employees that, even though they had specific assigned responsibilities for their position, their job was to ensure that the park’s guests were comfortably enjoying their visit.
That meant you were supposed to do whatever you needed to do, not only to fulfill your assigned responsibilities, but to support the overall “show” at the park and to help the guests in your area. If you saw trash on the ground, you’d clean it up. If a guest was lost, you walked them toward their destination and directed them the rest of the way. If someone looked grumpy, you’d make eye contact, smile, and gently try to engage them in friendly conversation.
That’s the attitude you need to bring to online publishing: Do whatever you need to do to make your site succeed, however you choose to define success. Now, at Disney, we couldn’t abandon our core responsibilities to float around the park as a roving concierge. I still had to drive a raft across a river, load a Pirate boat or push the button to start the singing bears - whatever my shift was at the moment. Nor can you abandon your core responsibility to report accurately and honestly on your chosen beat. You’ve got to find a way to do it all.
Fortunately, you are not the first journalist to face this challenge. Many others have started websites with great content and are earning money doing it.
Step 2) Learn about the market.
So your first assignment (and, yes, I’m assigning homework here), is to find five ad-supported websites you admire and learn how they handle their advertising. Get their rate cards and ad order forms. Find their readership profiles. Learn about how they manage ads, both now and when they first started publishing.
Maybe you can find that information online by clicking around their websites. Maybe you’ll have to send some e-mails and make some calls. Either way, you need to see the specifics of how other sites are soliciting and processing ads to help you understand how it is done.
Here’s what I want you to look for: What, exactly, are these sites selling? What ad sizes, positions and packages are available? How much do they charge? What restrictions do they place upon what can be bought, not just technical restrictions (e.g. no “pop-up” ads) but market restrictions as well (e.g. no “adult” ads, etc.)
Unfortunately (IMO), some sites do sell content, writing laudatory blog posts for payment, selling unmarked text links within articles, and the like. But you can find many solid websites that don’t engage in such un-journalistic behavior, and sell only access to their readers through assigned advertising blocks on their pages.
Ultimately, that is what the ethical ad-supported news publication sells to its advertisers: the opportunity to reach the publication’s readers through ad space on a page (or ad time during a broadcast). You’re selling your readers, not your content. But to do that effectively, you need to know what you are selling: You need to know about your readers.
Step 3) Learn about your readers.
If you haven’t done so already, go get the Google Analytics tracking code, as well as the code from Quantcast, and install them on your website’s templates. These services will track your site’s readership and give you loads of great data about the number of readers you’re attracting, from where they are coming to you, and what they are doing on your site. Quantcast also will tell you where your site ranks relative …

Safina admits to cracking under pressure
Dinara Safina says the possibility of becoming world number one was a key reason why she succumbed to nerves in her straight sets defeat to Serena Williams in the Australian Open final.
Accuweather forecast
The third-seeded Safina was barely a factor in the women’s decider, which Williams (pictured) - now a four-time champion at Melbourne Park - took less than an hour to win in convincing fashion 6-0, 6-3.
Williams not only collected her 10th singles major but also the WTA’s number one ranking, which would have gone the way of Safina had the 22-year-old Russian triumphed.
You can listen to Safina’s media conference below:

Safina, who also lost the French Open final last June, says she struggled to cope with the pressure of potentially becoming number one.
“It was the first time for me to play not only for the grand slam, but also for number one spot,” she said.
“I’ve never been through this situation and she was already.”
Safina, who will move to number two on the rankings, says she could not match the experience and aggression of Williams, who allowed her opponent just eight points in the opening set.

Nothing New to See Here, Please Remain Calm … Saturday: Florida Panthers @ New York Islanders

terminal 1, fort lauderdale ecumenical airport close to hollywood but quite maybe in dania beach, fla. — sitting in all directions from the jetblue counter waiting on my flight to nueva york in return the big hockey tourney that’s going down tomorrow on long archipelago.
Pete DeBoer made it clear he’s going to stress how important a win over the lowly Islanders is. He will remind them of the last time they were there, when Tomas Vokoun got mad and Nathan Horton scored a late goal in what became a 4-2 loss. That, you may recall, was the last of Florida’s four-game losing streak.
Boy, have the Cats turned things around since then.
Since losing to the Palm Isles, Florida has gone 7-1-3, the seven wins second most in a January in franchise history.
– Don’t know if you noticed, but Florida is 3-for-3 in penalty shots this season. Pretty impressive, eh? More impressive is that all three have come within a 19-day span. Some teams don’t get a penalty shot in a season. Florida fans have seeen three in less than a month. And all three have come at the Billboard in Sunrise.
– In the ‘If You Send It, I Will Post It’ Department comes a press release from loyal reader Charlie Flowers of Hollywood by way of his sister (another loyal reader and critic of OFP). Enjoy. Or not. Whatever.

7 Ways to Deal with Annoying People and Still Get Things Done

It’s a basic fact of life that, unless you’re Will Rogers, you can’t get along with everyone. Unfortunately, it’s also a fact that throughout your life, you’ll be in situations where you simply have to communicate with some of those people you just can’t stand. This may be an annoying boss, an ingratiating fan, a spineless co-worker, a difficult client, an abrasive in-law, and any number of people with any number of faults.
As much as you might like to run away and hide when you see these people coming, you’ll often need to work with them, sometimes (too) closely, in order to achieve your goals. You don’t always have to be nice ? professional and to-the-point will often get the job done just as well ? but you do need to make yourself understood clearly or risk letting your dislike translate into inefficient communication that hinders or even undermined entirely whatever projects you’re working on.
Fortunately, all it really takes is patience — with yourself as much as with the other person — and a little discipline to make sure you stay on the same page ? and that you don’t get caught up in whatever makes them so hard to get along with in the first place.
1. Listen.
A lot of conflicts are based in misunderstandings, so always make sure you’re getting everything, It can be easy enough to tune someone out when they annoy you; the trick is to use careful questioning to focus the other person on the topic at hand so they give you what you need and avoid straying too far. Poor listening leads to misunderstandings that need clarification ? which means more time spent with someone you’d really rather not be around.
2. Repeat everything.
Besides the tendency to tune out people you’d rather avoid, our feelings about another person can color our perception of what they’re saying. To avoid this, repeat back any instructions, questions, or other problems they pose to you to make sure you absolutely understand what they’re saying. Give them a chance to correct you before you go off half-cocked, sure you know what “that kind of person” wants.
3. Keep your cool.
It’s tempting to want to argue with people who rub you the wrong way, or to lose it and start pointing out their faults. Don’t do that! Unless they’re wrong about something that directly and materially affects you, don’t bother ? starting a debate or, worse, an argument will only prolong your agony ? and neither of you is likely to change your mind. Save the debates for when you’re with friends whose opinions matter to you.
4. Be clear about boundaries.
You don’t have to be friends with everyone. Which means you don’t have to do favors for everyone who asks. If someone’s encroaching on your time, simply tell them, “I’m sure this is important to you but it simply isn’t a priority for me right now. I really need to work on x and not y.” Again, there’s no need to be mean, just redirect the conversations whenever conversation drifts into areas that aren’t relevant and where you know you’ll be annoyed.
5. Fight fire with ice.
The worst thing you can do with an angry or irrational person is engage him or her. In the heat of aggression, any word or action interpreted as aggressive in response will only trigger more aggression ? and most of the item, if someone is upset and railing about it, every word and action will be read as aggression. As hard as it might seem to do, the best thing is to sit quietly and let them spend themselves ranting and raving, and then ask if they’d like to schedule a time to discuss the matter more calmly and return to whatever you were doing. If this sets off another round of yelling, simply wait it out and repeat.
It sucks, but the bottom line is you have nothing to gain by engaging with an irate person in the heat of the moment. And while it may seem that you’re giving up control of the situation ? after all, you’re sitting there passively taking it all in, even abuse ? most people feel ashamed and contrite after an outburst, especially one in which their target clearly was not responding to or inciting them, which puts you back in charge when there’s actually something you can do about the situation.
Jughead bomb
6. Close the door.
While you may have to interact with people you don’t care for in any number of situations, remember that your time is your own and don’t let other people, especially ones you’d rather not interact with, take control of your time.
